  1. Push ups are not meant to hurt. If you do them right and be cautious how often you dish them out, then it can be a very effective method. Remember the part "to keep myself physically Strong" This is one method of building upper body strength. If you take it easy and not use it for every infration, or adjust the push up count to the severity, then it can be a form of constructive training. Trust me I learned my lessons after having to do many push-ups.
  2. WOW 10 adults going. Sounds like a chance to split the parents into 2 patrols. Bbut if there is a lot of parents that are new to camping, then one would work. I look foward to our campout at the begining of next month. We are probably going to be taking 15 - 20 boys. and the same for the parents. I think that our site will be just big enough. Any way have fun and be safe
  3. I can see where a parent might be concerned. But there are time that they need to understand that we are not rookies at this. This past weekend we had a district camporee. There were tornado warnings for the neighboring counties. Of course we were all under severe thunderstorm watches. Yes it rained pretty hard on friday night. We also had one person that had a police scanner with all the Emergency MGT frequencies and Weather Frequencies. He also had a lightbar on top of his truck (Yellow). When the SM's checked in they were advised that if he was driving up and down the ro
  4. I would have to say that I am fortunatewhen it comes to cub behavior. The parents in my pack also support me when it comes to the cubs running around and when they need to behave. Here are some examples: We were at a district Veterens day campout. Not very big attendance, but when it was about 9pm, I told the boys that it was time for lights out. and yes I Even sent my boy to bed. The boys had some protest but the parents were heard saying that if Cubmaster Chris said that it is time for bed then lets go. A nearby pack could not understand that it worked that easy, but i told th
  5. Moxie I grew up in Maine and I know what it is you are talkin about. When I tell people about that I am from up that way they are always askin "Did you ever go to boston" I tell them that it was only an hour away and that we went there all the time. But anyway, I know what you mean by 3 hours until something substanncial (sp). I like the idea of another High Adventure base around the east coast. I cannot afford to go to Philmont. Although it is soemthing that I aspire to do with my son when he is old enough. But if there was something along those lines local to the eas
  6. Check with you local Lowes. They may have some of the build and grow kits left over that you can get. Who knows, they may even gove you some hammers and goggles too. That is what our local one did. It all worked out great. That can be a good craft. For the games, go to the www.macscouter.com they have the Big Book of games. There are a lot of outdoor games there. As for your conservation project, ask the park ranger or campsite manager. They should know of a few things that need to be done that the boys can do.
  7. Looks like a great idea. Wish I had thought of it.I will register soon and make sure that I pic yours.
  8. Dean, I agree with what you you said. I was just mentioning that there are things that we use these days that have changed scouting from what it was when we in the ranks.
  9. Well I have looked into several different things and I was talking with our CC and we looked for something on the WEB. We found one of those programs that dials your list of numbers and gives a message. The one that we found was free and after he makes some modifications to his computer my CC will be sending out practice messages to me and him. IF it works out as good as we hope, I will see about posting a link to the download.
  10. This is truely a tragic incident. I hope the families are able to get through the best that they can. Lets look at this in one aspect. The alcohol based hand cleaner IS Flamable. There have been many incidents to prove this, and this is one of them. I disagree with the constant use of the hand sanitizer. It not only kills the bad germs but it also kills the ones that we need. When the hand sanitizer came out, it was not meant to replace hand washing totally, but it was meant as a TEMPORARY fix to an immediate need. I think that we should all promote the use of soap and water to was
  11. Buffalo If some patrols take longer to get their camp chores done then there is less time for them to do activities. I agree that it is a learning exp. for the boys. Maybe poke in and ask the boys why they are taking so long. Maybe it is one boy who is not pulling thier share of the load. a quick conference with the PL or SPL may remidy (*sp*) this. But remember to let the Boy leadership correct it, just provide guidance. As for the adult patrols, I am all for them. I have been helping out with the Troop that my son will be moving to in a couple of years, ( now that they are ba
  12. Thank you ScoutNut. I could not remember where I saw the reference to the neighbor. I think that if you are in the type of area/neighborhood where your know your neighbor and trust yoru neighbor, and that person is able to bring the Tiger in your absense, then why not. I would not say this is recommended for everytime, but there are certain circumstances. Yes 5 boys is enough to start their own den. Maybe talk with the current leader and discuss splitting the den. These things can make for a better program if the schedule fits the leaders and parents time. I know of one pack in
  13. She did not say that it was the leader that would be taking her son. She said that there would be another parent. I will have to find specifically where it is stated, but it said that the adult partner could be a parent, grandparent, other adult relative, or nieghbor (Yes I saw it and as sooon as can find it I will post my reference) But if we are going to pick apart all of the little things. THen if a family has twins or triplets, do they have to have an adult for EVERY Tiger Cub. They might have to find another adult. Lets use common sense here. If there is a situation like
  14. I know that there are many different opinions on who can hold what responsibilities. So here is my question. Is there anything that is written that prevents a Committee Member from serving as Assistant Cubmaster also. I have a guy that is thinking about this, since he pretty much is my right hand man already.
  15. Does anyone have the Webelos schedule that is provided in the Webelos leader handbook in a PDF format. Just looking for a reference to put on my computer. Just trying to make sure that the plans for the rest of the year are getting done.

  17. Simple resolution to the parent issue with the tiger parents. No adult available, tiger does not stay.
  18. Joff That is so Cool. I tried it with my cell phone. It works and comes across as a text message. I think that I will see what other parents can use this. I like this idea. Do you know if there are any spam associated with this or is it just like using regular texts.
  19. INteresting topic. When it comes to display cases you can try several different things. Do you have a lot of patches to display. maybe try using poster frames from wal-mart and back it with red felt like a patch blanket. not all that professional looking but it could serve the purpose. With so many businesses going out of business maybe you could look into them donating their old glass display counters. Maybe you may be able find someplace that may have one of the old map display cases. You know the one with the pull out flat racks. You may be able to use that for display als
  20. As for the toilet issue, you must has latrine facilities. Pit privies, portajohns, stuff like that. You also need potable water. That is the way that our rules are. Make sure that you have someone who is baloo trained, or your tour permit will not get approved. Good luck and have fun.
  21. I have to agree with GKlose SAM Splints are GREAT. I love'em. They are so versitile, and can be cut with a pair of first aid scissors. Most are x-ray translucent so they don't have to be taken off right away. Not to mention they can be flattened out to fit in any first aid kit. And they are very strong. Here is a link to a list of videos that you can watch on the different uses of the sam splint. http://www.sammedical.com/sam_splint.html Usless trivia for the Day. The name SAM for the Sam Splint is actually the name of the guy that invented it, he was a combat m
  22. I saw some mention of some of the new major trauma bandages and dressings. The Quikclot powder that is out there is great. I would only recommend this for the troop level first aid kit and more importantly if you have a doctor or trained EMT in your troop. There are a lot of complications that can happen with this powder. Mostly it causes checical burns at the contact site. Mostly because it is a chemical reaction. So only use when you have no other option. I can tell you that I have been in Emergency medicine for 12 years and the only time that I have ever had to use it was once
  23. I think after reading the posts and sugestions here: It is apparent that scouting is the world to this young man. It sounds like he is every scoutmaster dream to have a boy that is this dedicated. OF course there seems like there are some things that need to be resolved at home. Maybe talk with the lad about things that are going on at home. YOu don't know and maybe he has been put aside for the younger child. Talk with this young lad and tell him that there is always someone there to help with his school work, and that school is just as important as scouting. Let
  24. I recently had this question so I contacted my my DE and this is what I got for an answer. Accordig to G2SS, BB and archery is only alowed at District and COuncil Activities. THerfore they have set forth a rule that only Registered Scouts (I guess this includes boy scouts) can participate in the BB GUn and Archery ranges. My DE told me that she had no problem telling a sibling that they could not shoot. This was an insurance issue and she would be more than happy to be the BAD GUY/GAL, as that was the downside to her job. That is what I got for an answer. Hope it helps
