  1. Just started James West and the History of the Boy Scouts of America.
  2. When doing the trails, just remember that they both start at the front of the old visitors center. The guides are not updated yet(or at least the ones we bought in April, right brfore we visited).
  3. Ive always wrestled with the thought: Is Scout Spirit something a boy only shows at Scouts or is it something they show day in and day out? For example have had a "twilight" Eagle who at 17 started to drift away towards the Fire Dept and Rescue Squad. EMS training was on Scout meeting night. Does this boy show Scout Spirit in his daily life? Yes is my answer.
  4. We dont reimburse for gas costs in our troop, but with that being said we also dont charge adults who go on the outing for the cost of food. On longer trips we have subsidized the gas cost.
  5. As I read this post, I pulled out my Insignia Guide to check it out. And as always I respect other opinions but the only thing I find in the Insignia Guide is: Badges of Rank Are for Youth Members. In Scouting, the advancement program is intended for youth members only. As I have stated before our Troops adults do wear Patrol Emblems and it works in our Troop. If it works in your Troop use it, if it doesnt don't. What matters is if the boys are "playing the great game of Scouting".
  6. There is the thought that boys whose parents are involved tend to make Eagle more than those whose are'nt.
  7. have a member of the cm act as a new parent guide. we let parents know up front that we have yet to loose a scout, have one die of exposure or starve. we always accept the help but the "adult leader" comes on the campout and the "parent" stays home.
  8. OGE, As far as the upper mgmt it was a pro. as far as the ranger feeling insecure, he is the long standing ranger of the council and runs the "cub/weekend" camp.
  9. At a campout this weekend cornered by the Ranger, asked where we were going to Scout Camp. I let him know and was told shame on me for not supporting the councils camp. At the same campout a member of councils upper mgmt taold it didnt matter as long as we were going to summer camp. Talk about mixed messages. Just to let you konow my answer to the ranger was with the current state of camp and gas prices travel to our camp 5 hours away didnt make sence with 10 other camps closer with quality programs.
  10. While I enjoy helping my main focus is the Troop. When looking for volunteers leave the SMS and ASM alone. Running a troop takes only 1 hour a week , right? Go to trhe Troop meetings and talk to the parents lining the room for volunteers.
  11. If the NESA wants a patch of their own, design one. Leave the Eagle alone. I dont like the idea or the example of purchacing a award. $10.00 for 1st class any one?
  12. The Eagle of course. How about any adult volunteer. Any Scout in uniform.
  13. as a SM, I let the scouts know that to wear the flap they should be paying dues. With that said the OA lodge in our area is not very active. I pay my dues and recieve nothing. Should the flap be worn as a honor that you were elected and passed the ordeal?
  14. Pail of Steam, bucket of spotted or stripped paint, skyhook, left handed smoke shifter( was told that there was no such thing because most people make do with a right handed one).... I think that there is a time and place for these things(camp wide scavenger hunt) and that it needs to be looked at by whos doing it. Is it hasing to get eleven year old boys out for the "snipe hunt" and off their duffs?
  15. Remembering back to the Eagle Scout who as a younger Scout putting up his tent, a new self standing. Waking up at 3 am to check during a wind storm and finding him sleeping with the tent on its side. He stakes his tent down now.
  16. Hi from CNY. SM of Troop and CC of Pack. WELCOME.
  17. The Troop Ranks as follows: 17 year old Eagle JASM(makes most of the meetings and 75% of outings, my son) 17 year old Eagle JASM(makes meetings and activities when activites allow, has been with me since Cubs) 16 year old Eagle JASM(comes to most meetings and 25% of outings, with me since Cubs, my nephew.) 16 year old Eagle JASM (makes most meetings and 50% of outings), 4 17 years old Life Scouts working on Eagle Troop Guide, OA REP, Instructor, Webelos Troop Guide,2 15 year old life scouts PL and Instructor and 4 14 year old life Scouts SPL, ASPL, 2 PLs. We try to keep them active by off
  18. 19. The current Troop That I'm with buys a embroided hoodie with the eagle medal over the heart with the writing Troop 52 Eagle Scout.
  20. Instea of the fundraising companies, try to buy the candy from a BJ or a Sams club. The cost on the bars tend to be less expensive so your profit tends to be higher. In any case It aways turns out that the same boys who put the effort into popcorn will be doing the candy sales.
  21. The Troop I serve in supports itsself in many ways. Firstoff theres Popcorn sales. The scout earns 10% of his sales towards his account. Sell $300 get $30. Second is our raceway pickups where we get a set amount and all the bottles and cans. The boys earn shares by attending or if they cant a parent can in their place. ex. $1000 in cans divided by # of shares = share price multiplied by the # of shares the boy had. Third for recharter we require each boy to pay the cost. In addition carwashes for T-shirts.
  22. All activities that the Troop wants to do must be voted on by the Troop and the PLC. Some years the boys have done the campwide games other years they have sat out, their choice.
  23. The two adult patrols have a name and a yell only, no PL or flag(other than the Troop banner that lists our Eagle Scouts and the patches the Troop has earned. They sleep and eat away from the boys unless invited to join them for a meal. They are encouraged to buy and wear the Scout uniform(At this time 90% have done so). They teach the methods of Boy Scouts to new adults and are a resourse for the boys. We dont play "the game". Adult patrols simply help keep the adults organized. In a side note it also serves to impress on the adults to be proud od the uniform( I dont know how many times Ive s
  24. Troop runs two adult patrols. one is the Eagle patrol(every one wants to be an Eagle)with the yell Eagles fly high! The name also coresponds to our highschool team. The other is a breakaway patrol that is really our fundraisers. They are the Momma Bears. Don't mess with your momma! is their yell.
  25. Last year the district our Troop is in had the highest popcorn sales, the highest FOS returns, and the lowest percentage of Troops going to Council Camp. The question came up was why? To this I could only answer for my own Troop. We have had a policy of traveling to OOC camps every two out of three years so that each experience is fresh for everyone. With ten or more camps within three to four hours of us we have never repeated a camp. 2009 is an in council camp year and with the closing of one of our councils camps this will be the first time in about five years to our councils "reservation.
