  1. 1. Do you always attend your council camp for summer camp? The boys make the decision as to where to go. 2. Do you feel obligated to support your council camp by attending summer camp there instead of going out of council? No, if the boys feel that something is lacking then thy wont choose it. 3. Do your Scouts decide on which camp to go to or is it a given that you will attend your council camp? At scoutcamp the troop gathers on Thursday night to discuss how the week is going. At this time starting with the youngest Scouts we dicuss whats important to them in a Scoutcam
  2. I would avoid the Zeus. Its ok for 1 person, but cramped with 2. It also does not vent very well when the door has to be closed like on a rainy night.
  3. 1. YES and even past. 2. Eagle 1983 Why do people look at "guides" and feel that these publications cam down from Mt. Sinai.
  4. We use the patrol name to instill a sence of belonging, just like we dont belong to the 4th district of the 316TH council of the BSA.
  5. Visited the Scout meeting one evening with my son and webelos den. Must have had a sign on my back because the following week I was approached by the SM and ASM who shook my hand and said " We need a Scoutmaster or the Troop must fold" Within two weeks the SM stopped coming and the ASM moved away. How could I say no? That was 8 years ago.
  6. I earned my eagle 6 months before I turned 16 and wore it proudly. My parents presented me with a new uniform at 18 with the Eagle Knot. would I have continued to wear it? I think so. Saying that I jump forward in time to when I took over as Scoutmaster, the previous Sm wore the Eagle Rank badge. When asked why he responded that most boys dont know or care what the knot is and that the badge ment something. I dont wear it now but I also dont police the 18 to 21 year olds to remove theirs. I feel it says something to the boys when they see these young men staying around wearing the Eagle.
  7. Goose Pond had a fantastic program. It kept both the older scouts and younger scouts interested. It is the only scout camp my troop has actually asked to revisit.
  8. Wear the Asst Patrol leader patch and the "ropes" of the den chief.
  9. I talk to the parents and let them know that daddy and mommy need to stay home and that the adult leader is welcome. Parents are not allowed to share tents or packs with their boys. Adults are expected to do "adult items like prepare the coffee" not cook dinner.
  10. As SM, I give the eagle a framed poem and their eagle neckachief. The troop gives the eagle a NESA membership and a Troop Eagle Scout Sweatshirt.
  11. While every 6 months seems extreme, we have life scouts sit for a BOR yearly so that they know what is expected of them and to follow up on life to eagle.
  12. Without upsetting the uniform police, the troops fathers wear their Fathers Pins on the left collar of their uniforms "uniformly".
  13. The sooner the better is right. Our Webelos meet at the same time as the scouts and interact with them often. It has made a much easier transition.
  14. Here in CNY there was another similar case. I took over the troop when said lad was life scout(10th grade), made summer camp with us as SPL, then dissapeared. Came back 12th grade to do project which supported his fire dept. (only used members of the FD who were in other Troops to help on project.) I spent weeks discussing the pros and cons with district Exec. and district Eagle BOR chairman and we decided that the boy met the requirements and that the cons werent worth the headaches of vetoing the Eagle Rank.
  15. I bought two new books last weekand went back to buy some more and now you cant buy any untill Sept. The books are identical to the old books except the covers and color photos instead of B&W.
  16. Star Scouts, Life scouts and Eagle Scouts acting as Den Chiefs? What a great concept. Who better to show what Boy Scouts is all about. What a great billboard to continue Scouting. Besides being a Den Chief can be demanding. Have you ever tried to herd cats?
  17. Camp Portafery of HiawathaSeaway Council outside Watertown NY is for sale.
  18. Remind the boys that a scout is thrifty, a scout helps to pay his own way and that of others. We have had the same problems with fund raisers with only the same scouts and families showing up. It has gone to if you show up you get a share if you dont, you have to pay for it yourself. Who doesnt get tired of the few supporting the many. As far as the crossovers get the into Troop scout funds as soon as they become WII and invite them to help.
  19. I agree with Goose Pond, but would also include Tuscarora Scout Reservation in Deposit NY ans Elk Lick Scout Reserve in Smethport Pa.
  20. I Have used a Jansport Carson since I returned to Scouting. Great Size with lots pf pockets.
  21. There is an interesting museum of Carter at Bear Mt State Pk in NY
  22. Just finished James E West and the History of the BSA. Just a few thoughts. Where would we be with the American Boy Scouts and the other bands still around?( Although this book gives me the idea as why the Girl Scouts are ticked at us.) Could have a different founding father done what West did? Another couple of books to read are Peater Applebaums book Scouts Honor and Cohrens Be Prepared.
  23. Im in Scouting for my sons(Eagle 06 and Tenderfoot 08). Also to give back to scouting what two great scoutmasters passed on to me.
