  1. WE all read that thread. We all came up with lots of great scenarios and expectations as well as argued the actual intent of the scout in question. But have you ever just seen something in an entirely different light? I didn't mean to...it just happened! Just a few minutes ago, as I was looking at the basic forum catagories list, I looked over to the right side of the screen and saw a highlighted subject: "Appropriate discipline for disrespect?" I don't know why, but I suddenly saw that title asking me something in a completely whole new way. Instead of reading it as a mom wrote it, I turned it around based on the situation and I read it as if an Adult Leader wrote it, in which case - to me - it sounded like it was saying: " How do I MAKE scouts respect me, and how do I punish them if they don't?" WOW! Kinda scary isn't it? It goes beyond something as simple as respect and steers itself more towards a power issue. I grew up knowing that certain people and certain positions were deserving of respect, unless the individual did something to loose that respect, but in that case, it was the individual him/herself that lost the respect and not the position. Sometimes respect is earned..sometimes it is owed, but it must always be maintained by the individual in the position of respect, lest the lose it of their own accord. "Either you respect me or I will punish you!" A dictator couldn't have said it better!(This message has been edited by scoutfish)
  2. I don'tneed any anti gravity boots, but how about those self drying clothes in " Back to the Future II " ? One thing that scares me is that my grandson's son may earn his forester badge by studying and reading about forests because they no longer exist to be visited. The fishing merit/ activity badge may be a thing of the past as there are no fish anymore. The first aid training may just be a reminder to keep the batteries in your lighter sized "Cure-All" device charged as there won't be a need for actual medicine anymore, just medical nanobots.
  3. If I had to guess...I'd say the fish is wearing a WWII German helmet with the Free Masons' symbol on it!
  4. "Wrong, and this is exactly why having public schools discriminate is a problem. Because there are still plenty of people like you who would see no problem in cutting off a group you dislike from a program " WRONG! Merlyn, He is asking you why..if you really are concerned for any youth, haven't you created or tried to start a program for them. So far, you "see no problem in cutting off a group you dislike from a program " Yet you have no idea of what a program should be. You haven't even tried your own program. Your only association with any kids is destroying thier program in their supposed sake. So in your answer, you specifically and completely identified yourself! You aren't interested in any kids programs, you just want to shut down those that do not follow your beliefs. Good job! You should be proud.
  5. I would have written more, but I don't have time....I have to tell a dad why we didn't specifically call his son up for an award at our last pack meeting...even though : "he's been in it long enough to have an award!"
  6. To answer it just the way it was asked: YES! I have no doubt that we are part of it. But it's not of our doing. We are just a small part of a bigger plan that mom and dad have laid out! Scouting itself isn't an over scheduled activity ( or isn't supposed to be) but I have no doubt that the parents who do overschedule - have scouting right in the middle of the mix. When we had (1 of 3 ) PWD car workshop FOR THE scouts, quite a few parents wanted to know if we could reschedule because little Jimmy ( little Johnny's cousin ) was already scheduled for Baseball practice, or was it soccer, football, karate or gymnastics? Mondays are our regular meeting nights, so they were out. Tuesdays were piano or guitar lessons, Wednesdays were for YMCA activities Thursdays were for Chorus club. Friday wasn't good because that was movie night. Saturday was already taken in the am by the game they have been practicing for. Meanwhile Sat mid day and pm were out too because of playdates and explorers clubs. Sat night was out because of movie night. Sunday, well, gosh, between church, after church social and all the activities that Jimmy was signed up for at the country club were already planned too. I guess we were just a bunch of thoughtless Cub Scout leaders when we didn't just schedule PWD workshop, testing and the main event during the only available night.........Den meeting night! Next year, well, there are about 15 minutes from the time Jr walks outside til the bus comes...if we plan it just so........
  7. I agree with that, but you ever look at him and figure he's the outer space version ot a white trash redneck? His clothes are thread bare ab=nd the sleeves were torn off. He has a mullet and probably doesn't bathe but one a week. And I know I said it already..but I just can't get past the mullet with highlights too! I bet he had a Yosemite Sam sticker on the back of his ship! And some of thos chrome women mud...ummmm..thruster flaps. WHEEEEEEEEEE---DOGGY!
  8. Sorry desertrat77, I have no idea what star you are talking about. Would it be the : (A) Sea Scout Council Chairman 2 Star Emblem - White (B) Sea Scout National Chairman 4 Stars Emblem - White © Norther ( Kansas ) Star (D) Service Stars (E) Sea Scout Reg Chairman 3 Stars Emblem - White (F)Boy Scout Star rank badge In order to answer your question, I'll need you to fill out the appropriate forms - in triplicate - certified and post dated no later then last week and fax them to ...
  9. Funny thing about the swastika: It was around for centuries before Hitler was born. There are two different swastikas( not even the original name) - left hand and right hand. I cannot even begin to know what every single group used them for, but for some, they were religious symbols, for the greeks they were signs of good luck and for the oldest of the oldest Chinese, they were astrological symbols. But then one freakin evil idiot used them as his banner while going on a world wide crusade to remove, drive out and destroy all who do not think like him (Hmmmm?) and the symbol gets permanantly associated with only that guy.
  10. DYB-MIKE, Do you have the Webelos Leader Guide by any chance? Pages 5 and 6 have the Starting plan for 4th Grade Webelos. plan A starts in June. Plan B starts in September. Now, here is the bigger issue:BSA inability to tie all mentions of a specific thing together instead of scattering them through 6 different books and guidlines. Why aren't the two different starting dates signified or at the very least, mentioned by asterick in the Cub Scout Cycle? Anyways, if your pack follows September s the new year and the end of school as the end.. you have a (average of) 2 1/2 months to finish up?
  11. Acco, Isn't that the same case where after some time, the state changed that stretch of hiway's name to "DR.Martin Luther King Jr Hiway"...or some other prominant civil rights activist's name? The KKK pretty much droped the effort dur to the embarrassment of maintaining THAT stretch of hiway? Maybe not the same instance, but I both read inpapers and heard on radio about that happening somewhere about 5 years ago.
  12. Not having ever filled out one of these forms...Is there a spot for commenstr or "other" on the form? Is there a somewhat decently wide margin on the form next to the edge of the paper? Could you call the scoutshop and say that you want to buy "duplicate badges" just for the reason you stated? What if a shirt gets lost/destroyed/ worn out? Are scouts expected to re earn every rank and such in order to get another badge?
  13. Depends on your interpretation of it. Personally, I think porta-jons reprresent all that is vile , nasty and should have a picture in the dictionary right next to the word "unsanitary" , but they do meet some peoples idea of sanitary as compared to....having nothing. Water...sure, having bottles of it is okay as well as coolers/dispensers, canteens and such. But figuring that it'sa FAMILY PACK CAMPOUT...your probably not looking to hike to your campsite no more than..what .. a few hundred feet? Facilities shouldn't be that hard to have.. But if you do find yourself at Old Farmer MacDonald's farm..bring water, and either get porta-jons or set up a facility.(This message has been edited by scoutfish)
  14. Yeah, but pie is in this year. Pie is the new black! Soup would fall under cooking/ dutch ovens and camping/ high adventure...no?
  15. Baloo- appendix A (page 75) Mandatory standards #4 Drinking water from an approved source is provided at convienient locations and is readily available. #8 All facilities are available to people with disabilities. #9 Each family site is within 300 feet of a sanitary toilet facuility. Now, read those carefully as there can be a ton of interpretation to each of them: #4 can be bottled water that is in a cooler or even a cardboard box strategically placed around camp or even in your own cooler. #8 IF you have somebody with disabilities, they have to be able to have facilities too. If you don't have somebody with a disability, then no worries. #9 Site is within 300 feet. Well, that can be the boundry of a site being within 300 fet, not an actual tent. Just saying so as you don't think a rule is broken if you don't have bathrooms or porta-jons next to every tent
  16. Well, I guess it's about that time..........WAITER! There is a Musca domestica in my pie! (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  17. "Technically", my tent is considered a 4 man, but in Scoutfish sizes, it's more like 2.1 person tent. I'm 6'2" and 255 pounds. 4 of me ain't fittin in that tent!
  18. Ozark Trail offers a 16 X 10 , 3-room tent with an attached "canopy like" thing over the entrance as well as two smaller hatch style doors at each end. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail-3-Room-XL-Vacation-Lodge/10996294 Technically, the center room is considered a great room, while the two end rooms are considered sleeping rooms. Anyways, I never said I'd share that tent, but just explaining Phibbles comments as I THINK they were meant. Truth be told, I'd rather my son sleep in his own tent and I sleep inmy own. I sure don't need to hear another adults snoring, flatulence or worse at night! (This message has been edited by scoutfish)
  19. Well please correct me if I'm wrong, but when it's not Jambo fundraising , doesn't the "earned" money still only go into passbook accounts ( or whatever your troop calls it) that are used as credits towards pack events, scout supplies, etc? In our pack, and I realize you are talking troop - not pack , scouts can earn a percentage on individual sales, but that percentage goes to a passbook account. That $$$ can be used for books, hats, uniforms or uniform acessories, or towards payment on trips, field trips, campouts, summer camps,etc... But at no time do the scouts actually get cash handed to them. If you have money left over after you cross over from Webelos to BOY scouts, any unused money is diverted to the next years Tigers accounts. If you drop out, the money goes to the pack general funds. But this policy is explained to all before the first dollar is raised.
  20. Me thinks you should start a committee devoted just to committee the other committees! LOL! Couldn't help myself!
  21. I think what Phibbles meant was this: As long as each scout has their parent in the tent, then sharing is okay. Meaning if I had a ten man tent and just my son ands myself went camping ( this is not hypothetical) and another scout and his dad didn't have a tent, I could share with them. YP would not be violated as long as BOTH scout's dads were in the tent. The only harm would be the odd stares and looks both the dads would get!
  22. Never said a 1 or 2 year old in school. But I work with a guy who's son is actually two grades ahead based on academic acheivement. He's not in scouting, he is active in afterschool science explorers or something like that. Personally, I figured emotionaly and mentaly he would be held to the age and not grade level.
  23. Yeah....Mr.Data. All I have to do is throw out a kitty or a judical question to distract him. Kinda like this site! LOL! But he is a physical object subject to the power of the force! By the way, my son brought up a great question last week: If light sabers are pure energy and electricity, and they can cut through/ go through anything...why can't they go through each other? I told him that was a great question!
  24. Oh yeah, I forgot one more thing..... You may have the Vulcan Death grip but we have the force! If all that electricity shooting out of our hands doesn't kill you...the electric bill will!
