  2. It's not Doctoral Oral Examinations. It's not Defense of the Dissertation. It's Adult Association with an 11-17 year old. Registration Trained. Every one of us here knows someone who is simply on the books, but hasn't done anything beyond YP. IMO, the object of the exercise, for the CC/Advancement Coordinator, is to find the best adults to visit with the Scout, to check in with him on where he is and where he's going, and to encourage and challenge him.
  3. And maybe even a National Camp Standard to boot!
  4. Key point to the OP: It's a two year limitation on time for camping. Even one day a month, you're going to get a youth member to eligibility. Also, M-S counts as six days on my fingers and toes.
  5. What idiot in Irving went and bought the US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) TRADOC Educational Data System? These things look identical to TREDS course numbers. Sigh. At Beav... Have you thought of doing the number just underneath the log?
  6. The Armed Forces Recipe Service (TM 10-412) is DOD's institutional cooking manual. The recipes are built on 100 person increments. That's pretty easy to scale up or down! The website below is one site where they're stored... http://www.tpub.com/content/food/recipes/ Here is one example: Breakfast Burritos: CHEESE AND EGGS BREAKFAST BURRITO Calcium 170 mg Sodium 499 mg Cholesterol 167 mg Fat 14 g Protein 16 g Carbohydrates 26 g Calories 302 cal Yield 100 1 Each Portion Ingredients: EGG WHITES,FROZEN,THAWED 7-1/2 lbs OR 3 qts 2 cup EGGS,WHOLE, 7-1/2 lbs OR 3 qts 2 cup FROZEN CHEESE,CHEDDAR,SHREDDED 2-2/3 lbs OR 2 qts 2-5/8 cup SAUSAGE,PORK,COOKED,DICED 2 lbs TOMATOES,FRESH,CHOPPED 2 lbs OR 1 qt 1 cup ONIONS,FRESH,CHOPPED 1 lbs OR 2-5/8 cup PEPPER,BLACK,GROUND 1/3 oz OR 1 tbsp OREGANO,CRUSHED 1/2 oz OR 3 tbsp COOKING SPRAY,NONSTICK 2 oz OR 1/4 cup 1/3 tbsp COOKING SPRAY,NONSTICK 2 oz OR 1/4 cup 1/3 tbsp TORTILLAS,FLOUR,8 INCH 9-1/2 lbs OR 100 each Method 1. Combine egg whites and eggs. Blend thoroughly. 2. Combine cheese, sausage, tomatoes, onions, pepper and oregano; mix thoroughly. 3. Lightly spray griddle with non-stick cooking spray. Pour about 1 quart egg mixture on 325 F. lightly sprayed griddle. Cook until partially set. Add 6 ounces cheese-sausage mixture. Cook until cheese is melted and eggs are firm. CCP: Internal temperature must reach 145 F. or higher for 15 seconds. 4. Place tortillas on lightly sprayed griddle; heat 30 seconds on each side. 5. Place about 1/2 cup cooked egg mixture in center of each tortilla; fold tortilla to cover eggs and form burrito. 6. CCP: Hold for service at 140 F. or higher. Note In Step 2, 3-1/4 pounds (1/2 No. 10 can) of canned diced tomatoes may be used per 100 portions. Drain before using.
  7. jet, If you are SM, you can refuse to start them on any MBs other than camping and first aid, so you can be sure their basic skills are in order... You can also have a long and serious talk with their parents.
  8. I said this a couple years ago, I say it again today: Be careful of what you ask for. You just might get it. We, the mass of volunteers in the field, asked for a definition. We got it. Now, we have to live with it. To me, the leadership positions in the Troop are perhaps the vital responsibility of the Scoutmaster. He has help, from his ASMs and certain Committee folk, but development of these youth is his charge in life. When does guidance, support, and mentoring for a POR begin? My answer is well before the youth is given the patch. There should be a SM conference, where Mr SM and the youth discuss the job. There should be time to think for the youth: IMNSHO, during that time Mr SM needs to call Mom and Dad: If they are not onboard, the youth is being set up for failure! Yes, I have seen it happen. Once the youth is selected for the position, the adult has to be "not too far away" while the youth finds his feet in the job. Keep the youth accountable to his position. An attaboy after he does something good (be generous, but slowly raise the bar), a sage comment when he needs a teaching moment, a hard question when he's Missing In Action. If the SPL is a solid, mature citizen, some (up to most) of this can be powered down to him and his ASPL(s). It takes work to teach the youth members. Period! As Beavah said, removing them from responsibilities is the last resort, and should be the answer well under 5% of the time. My thoughts
  9. What AvidSM said, and one other point: Have you talked to your COR lately? The COR is the person on the voting spot; he can raise all kinds of issues with the Council Board and the Professional Service. He represents the licensee of record for your unit. Has your COR talked to the District Committee and the Council Board lately?
  10. Advertising is served out by the ad provider. If we want to make this a pay board, Terry can stop the ads. Otherwise, how do you expect him to pay for our bandwidth for this site?
  11. Quick comment: The previous Chief of Staff, Army, reversed the location of the Field on Army Combat Uniform flag patches (colored and subdued) because the United States Army is an "Expeditionary Army", and the flag itself trails the staff when the flag is moving forward into harms way. I personally prefer to have the field on its own right, in the position of Honor. Take that for whatever it is worth...
  12. It was amazing. My son dragged his feet forever on starting to set up his ELSP ... he thought (emphasis thought) he wanted to follow in the footsteps of another Eagle in our Troop. We did a course correction ... he loves music. Making music a major part of his ELSP was akin to a jolt from a car battery. He was energized, enthused, and had his plan together and presented to everyone inside 60 days. Sometimes, helping them learn that one particular path is not the path to success can help...
  13. Locally, I am able to buy leg quarters in bulk. Gets my cost down to 50 cents a pound or so...
  14. There are elements of the US Code which are punitive in nature. There are other elements of the code which have administrative law penalties. This has neither. It simply makes BSA a Corporation of DC, by Charter. It establishes reporting requirements. That's what matters to Congress. Oh by the way ... That's also what AMTRAK is... a DC Corporation, for that matter, so is the Postal Service and the former Conrail. Are you getting my drift about DC Corporations?
  15. shortridge, Not necessarily. I saw some doosies of records when I took over advancement in the Troop I served. I think three phone calls are in order as bacchus starts doing this: A call to the Staff Adviser for Advancement and Registrar ... they should be on board in short order. One to the DAC, a courtesy, but he might appreciate knowing a unit is not being helpful on the Advancement Method. The last one is a maybe ... the Council Advancement Chair ... that one depends on how much cover bacchus thinks he needs.
  16. What council are you in? What did your Council Advancement Chairman and hi Professional Staff Adviser say?
  17. My opinion: Advancement items should be automatic. Now, if we are talking Eagle, the Troop in advance should set a standard on what it will buy (silk necker and sterling silver, or cotton necker and silver-filled?). That way, the person doing the buying and the Treasurer know what right looks like. Recharter should be automatic. X Scouts @15 +12 for BL, Y Scouters @15, plus rechartering fee. Camp down payment should be automatic, once the preliminary count is in (contingent on funds on hand). Camp progress payments should be automatic. There are probably a few more, but these are the ones where the CC, the SM, and the Treasurer put their heads together and do the done deal.
  18. Oh, dear Lord. I'm with Beavah. He's 12. Twelve. He has five years and loose change to enjoy so many different trails in Scouting. Let him do so ... please. EagleSon turned 21 this summer. He's now aged out of the youth programs of Scouting. Along the way, he has... - Staffed five seasons at one of our Council Scout Reservations. - Camped as a camper until after he had turned 18. (The main reason he didn't camp the last three years was his summer staff contract got longer, and there were things he wanted to do outside of Scout Camp ... like a band tour his HS graduation summer, and a low brass clinic this year). - Went to a Philmont trek - Several OA induction weekends, fall fellowships and winter banquets. Every young person has their own trail to blaze. Tell your bride, his Mom, that he's got lots of time to explore ... and then let him be part of the game with a purpose. He's already taking to heart an ethos of service to others. How many non-Scouting parents would like that in their kids?
  19. Folks, Step away from the keyboard Cub Scout Sports and Academics are a supplement to the rank advancement system. They are designed to allow youth to explore hobbies and be the first step to lifelong enjoyment. If you want the program materials, the Supply Corporation item is Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program Guide (#34299). You can order it at your scout shop. The standard is still: Do your best If there is no hard interpretation, I'd err on the side of the Cub Scout. Be generous, as long as they are earning the individual awards. Most of these requirements are not onerous. I rely on usscouts.org as a reliable source of data. Here is their link to the sports and academics program: http://usscouts.org/advancementTOC.asp#academics
  20. To get back on topic, If he's crossing over with the rest in the winter/spring, I'd have a standard rank advancement stand up as part of the Pack Meeting. Then he can participate with the others in the big show when they're ready to move up to the Troop. If he's moving up right now, though, invite the Troop SM to help.
  21. RS has given you great advice. I commend one other thing: You are someone the Troop Scribe (or whichever youth member does the legwork of collecting money in your Troop) will report to and learn from. Give him something simple he can use for collecting funds from the youth that get turned into you. You will have about 4-5 busy cycles a year: - Rechartering payments (both funds in and one pretty big check out) - Camp down payment. - Up to 3 Camp progress payments - Midyear dues, if your Troop collects in 6 month cycles. - Fundraisers I wish you success!
  22. My District Director consulted ScoutNet as well as the Council Professional Staff Adviser to the Advancement Committee. It appears Geocaching is Live and youth may earn it.
  23. I will ask my Professionals if Geocaching is actually loaded in ScoutNet advancement module. At that point, it's live.
  24. Acco, I find myself agreeing with you. Kudu... When I was a FIST chief, I worked for my battery commander and my maneuver company commander. Even a patrol leader (British Cavalry style) reported back to his Troop Commander and to the Regimental commander. In every unit of the Armed Forces (which we agree, B-P modelled his organizational structure upon, albeit Her/His Majesty's Army, not the US Army), there are additional resources backstopping and support the line squad/patrol leader. Supply Sergeant, Cook, Quartermaster, armorer, signal officer... so yes, there is room in Scouting for the folks who provide specialized support to the PL. That was even true in the US Army of 1916.
  25. BUZZWORD!!!! BINGO!!! Folks, the training technique we are talking about here is TAYLORISM. It's an analytical method that's been around for a century now. The Gilbreth family (Cheaper by the Dozen) is a story about one such practicioner. Boy Scout instruction, no matter the words used, follows the pattern: - Introduce the material. Discuss why the method taught is the best way. - Demonstrate. Give the learner the chance to see what right looks like - Allow the learner to perform the task under supervision. Correct, critique, and praise. - As the learner masters the task, let him do it without supervision. In the military, its Systems Approach to Training. In education, it's Instructional Systems Development.
