  1. Do it. Make it fun. The kids aren't going to know if they are official or not. It is really about the experience.

  2. Agreed. I hope the other troop isn’t requiring him to pass the youth instructor sign off and the adult sign off.

  3. “The program was a big part of my life and the lives of my children. I want to make sure every child has an opportunity to have that same amazing experience.” - Roger Krone IMHO, that would be a good lead for our 2024 Report to the Nation due April 1 to Congress. * I hope Mr. Krone et al. takes our Charter obligation seriously and produces an accurate, thoughtful, and on-time report. * There may be some terminology confusion - Report to the Nation which is for Congress and American people and National Annual Report for National Annual Meeting and hopefully us too? 4. Concur... the only pertinent step in the advancement process is that a Scout "learns". And that can happen in many different ways... A Scout can learn the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace on his own. When he feels he is ready to be tested to "Recite the Leave No Trace Seven Principles from memory." , he asks. If he passes the test, great... sign him off. If he does not pass the test, he goes back to learning, until he feels he is ready again. You can offer instruction, but not require it.

  5. My son hit Webelos this year. I took a look through the available adventures and saw some really good ones that are retired. This weekend, we tackled Fix-it. My autistic 8 y/o loved it. I haven't seen him this engaged in anything outside of books, Legos, or something on the computer, ever. I think having a huge menu of tasks to pick from really made him feel empowered. Getting his own tool set just added to it. He was super excited to push the cart through Lowes to the tool aisle. We went around the house fixing some of the things that needed fixing and creating issues to fix for those

  6. To sum up the last jamboree in a word? Sucked. I visited 3 days. I had been to 2 past jamborees, one as a youth and one as staff. My 2 daughters, niece, and BIL were with the contingent. It sucked. Many parts of the “Disneyland of Scouting” were just not operational. No arena shows. Sucked.

  7. We use some hand me down books in our Pack so my son's Wolf group has been working on Motor Away (retired) unintentionally, our Den Leader is not a big Scoutbook user and we also completed another one. I think with the big changes this year (especially to Weeblos and AOL) we're going to see a lot of people working on retired ones. With that said. I was thinking (for fun) of working on some of the old sports ones from the 90s as I found the original checklist (and have the beltloop and pin because well, they were mine) How do people feel about working on very retired ones (for fun)

  8. That is so true. The BSA spent waaaay to much money on the Disneyworld of Scouting and now that is a pile of debt and costs. Not sure what the long-term solution may be but casting that site off during bankruptcy would have been a bold move. With only 15K or so going to last Jamboree, the logistics of needing a larger than life site may be a requirement of the past. Maybe revisit the 1973 plan and have an East and a West Jamboree to make it easier to attend and reduce the numbers are each site.

  9. Roger Krone is showing far more engagement in a few months than Mosby did in years. No complaints so far! That said, BSA is in a crisis. Hopefully he takes aggressive action to course correct.

  10. 02/23/24 Harvard Business Review: Presidents Found Their Second Acts In the section William Howard Taft Finally Gets His Dream Job are these seemingly misplaced paragraphs perhaps for a second article CEOs Found Their Second Acts? We all have dream jobs. Roger Krone, who became the CEO of The Boy Scouts of America, may offer a corporate analog for what it can mean to finally get there after decades of work and an unusual path. A former Eagle Scout, Krone had been chairman and CEO of Leidos, a $14 billion, 47,000 employee, Fortune 250 government technology company, from 2014 to 2023.

  11. I'll even pull the applicable verbiage out: "Members should make every effort to keep their uniforms neat and uncluttered. " "Jackets and Their Insignia Multicolored jackets are available for optional wear by youth members and adult leaders. The universal emblem should be worn on the left pocket or, in case of a jacket without chest pockets, in the same area. The Philmont bull emblem is especially designed for the red wool jac-shirt to be sewn on the left side above the pocket. On all jackets, Philmont Scout Ranch, Philmont Training Center, or high-adventure bas

  12. YUP!!! I always say "If you make 'em choose, you gonna lose!" Do your sports and come to whatever meetings and outings you can. If you want an elected position...then it's a different conversation.

  13. 100% agree. BSA requirement is for the scout to have the skill to advance. There is no requirement for the scout to be instructed. Heck, an ideal scout owns their own skill development by reading or learning thru any method they can. Is your process egregious? No. Will it be a huge red flag? No. ... It escalates as an issue when scout / troop conflict exists. I saw this every year. Scouts would escalate advancement issues to the Council Advancement Committee requesting approval to pursue Eagle beyond age 18 because the troop delayed the scout with extra hoops that added

  14. Go for it. There is much to be said for reviewing stuff from decades back for use today, keeping safety and YP issues in mind of course. But many of the activities are not unsafe if done with skill and care and of course real supervision. Much of the time the youth take to it with vigor. .
