  1. While google may only show this site using "conditional Scouter," I have heard used by my DE and on a facebook page. As @an_old_DC stated, in both cases it was in a demeaning manner. I'm upfront. I think this decision was the worse one BSA has ever made. It's worse than the Improved Scouting Program of the 1970s. Boys need a place to call there own, just as the girls do. Now there is one less place for boys to be themselves. But the writing on the wall has been there since I was a Scout back in the day. I did research and talked to others about it. I was a Sea Scout and an Adviser. I've

  2. I don't think the "mandate" is changing for either gender. The rule on adult supervision (and I looked at the new one, which I think takes effect in October) says two leaders must be "at" the activity, or "present at" the activity. We have had discussions before about what those words and phrases really mean in practice. I have never understood the rules (including the new one) to mean that every Scout must be within eyesight of a unit leader at all times while at an activity. (Indeed, there are times when that CAN'T happen even if anyone wanted it to, in light of the YP guidelines regardi

  3. Perhaps a "Conditional" shirt sleeve strip like "Trained"?

  4. The forum should take up "Conditional Scouter" as a symbol for quality scouting. Both Baden Powell and Bill Hillcourt are Conditional Scouters by definition of how they presented and protected the scouting program. Both these men are held in the highest honor for youth scouting. In the Spirit of scouting's founders, Conditional Scouters are a brotherhood of guardians that protect the mission to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. I am a Conditional Scouter and proud of it. I am a Scoute

  5. Meh. You don't need Philmont to go backpacking, Sea Base to go sailing, or Bechtel Summit to visit Disneyland. The Scouts in my troop are becoming more and more antagonistic toward the idea of any combined BSA event. After our last summer camp, they resolved to never attend a council camp again. When I reminded our PLC of an upcoming district camporee (which I was looking forward to), it was quickly voted down and replaced by a backpacking overnighter. Meeting other Scouts looks to be pretty low on their list of priorities. Judging by our campfire conversations, their best memories a

  6. I believe so. Otherwise, what is the point of requiring a YPT registered female if they can't be counted on to be around at all times? If they are absent when something happens then what was the point to send one along at all? Because no girl troops currently exist. The ONLY way to complete the current requirement is to visit an all-boy troop.

  7. I googled "conditional scouters" and "conditional scouter" (both in quotes) and got 6 hits, all of which are on this forum. Bing showed fewer. It seems to have started with a reference to something that someone else said. Is it possible that we created our own thing that we can get angry about? Someone somewhere said something condescending and now we're blaming "them" for being un scout like. Maybe we should get back to dutch oven recipes or something else fun.

  8. I’m not a professional. I’m an old time retired scoutmaster with passion for the traditional patrol method program. I’ve been very critical of the recent changes, including admitting gays and transsexuals. Not because I have phobias, I believe I’m more compassionate for these kids. But National is putting volunteers in the position of encouraging behaviors that these youth may regret when they mature into adults. I don’t believe accepting girls 14 and younger is good for the program because it will take away from the boys at a National level. It doesn’t matter if some troops are totally m

  9. The next four years will be interesting to watch. The BSA looses around 50% (give or take) of Scouts crossing over to troops. Actually I believe it’s slightly more with crossovers who join troops but never show up. Those numbers don’t count as dropouts until next rechartering. Anyway, the main cause of the large drop out is a boring program. But the girls, and parents of the girls, have a different motivation for crossing over. I have said for many years that parents have a lot of say in their kids staying in scouting. More so at the cub ages, but a significant amount at the troop age as

  10. A side note on the importance of earning Eagle. When we went to Sea Base this year, 2 of our Eagles who just aged out went with us as adults. In the airport, someone noticed that one was wearing his Eagle badge and because of it, bought the crew a dozen donuts. So Eagle is all that and a box of donuts.

  11. I relate to the "Scouting Addict" label. With three generations of Eagles, I used to joke that Scouting was part of our family DNA. My breaking point was realizing that all levels of Scouting will be moving to co-ed except the individual troop unit. Everything else (every district, council, national event - including summer camps) will be co-ed. BSA's promise of a parallel girl program is yet another lie. Seeing all the new BSA promotional materials focused on girls, it's clear that boys are being left out in the cold in this new "Family Scouting". Boys' needs now take a back seat to incl

  12. As a scout mom of 7 years, I am against girls joining the BOY Scout of America. If they like BS's program so much, they should advocate GS to follow it. As a cub scout leader of 5 years, I am against girls joining the CUB Scout. It's hard enough to recruit volunteers because fewer dads step to the plate now. Also, the more the moms volunteer, the more the Pack looks like daycare. Adding the girls will make it like GS. It's truly ridiculous to have girls in different ranks but the same den. Each rank has its own achievements to accomplish so how do they design and run the den meetings by h

  13. And how many boys are headed to the exits in reaction to program changes that ignore their needs and opinions? I predict more boys will be lost than girls gained, for a net loss in overall membership.
