  1. @Mich08212, here's what's weird to me (and I think most of us who are Eagle scouts): the last thing we would ever do is wait for some committee to plan this thing. Not to sound too much like The Little Red Hen but when I did mine: I got the date from the church to reserve the hall. I let the troop know when it was happening. I invited the speakers. I asked scouts if they would participate. I asked the SM if he would do his usual shtick. I stuffed the invites and addressed the envelopes (typed, I think, triple spaced). Mama and her friends on the women'

  2. Sounds to me like whatever hoops needed to be jumped through were done so successfully. The award kit is in the scout's hands. To me, the buck is stopping at the committee. There could be some sour grapes because the boy pushed the deadlines, and that's where there may be more to the story. But, that's not particularly relevant. What is relevant? When the troop gets into the habit of providing space, time, every scout in uniform, honor guard, etc ... for every ECoH, families feel entitled to that. Then committees feel like they need to govern it. Letting adults run around with sciss

  4. We got the call this morning, and I spoke to John. Our arrival date is the 8/1 so at least we have a week or so. Been a scramble, but we're going Atikokan. The drive from Winnipeg is going to take longer, going to swing back through Minneapolis. Won't be as remote, but I predict fun.

  6. Sounds like my son. Very mellow. Was having fun. He was a year or so in and I sat down with him and showed him how easy it was to get things signed off. It was not on his radar. He was finally mature enough. He suddenly got two ranks at one COH. He still didn't get eagle until two months before his 18th birthday. What he enjoyed about scouts was the adventure and friendships. That has stuck with him. His dog has now been up more peaks over 14,000' than I have. I wouldn't tell him what to do. However, you could ask him what he wants to do in scouts and then support him. If he says he wants

  7. Resurrecting the thread, already posted this a few times throughout the forum, but I like this thread concept. I staffed NYLT this summer, I noticed in the development weekends that the SPL of my course and Scoutmaster didn't see eye to eye on some things. As the new adult to NYLT, (and 24 years old) I mostly filed that information away for future use. Besides, I was struggling to pick up my job as Adult QM advisor. On course, that situation didn't improve much, so I offered to help bridge that communication gap. The Scoutmaster was willing, but the SPL brushed me off (politely), s

  8. The following, for what it's worth, from the National Council (I inquired after everyone I talked to at local council claimed to be unaware of the proposed new rules):: "National legal counsel stated that 1 person must be registered (Merit Badge Counselor) and the 2nd adult does not have to be registered but must be over 21 – suggestion is a parent.." This is not responsive. The new rules does not call for "persons" or adults, but "registered adults." The new rule needs to be withdrawn and reconsidered by competent adults aware that parents have legal custody and Scouters ha

  9. I think there are two ways to do a Court of Honor for an Eagle Scout. One: Have the Eagle Scout rank awarded during a Troop Court of honor. Maybe have the Scout say a few words, his parents, a troop adult of his choice. 10 minutes or so. Two: Have the Eagle Scout and family plan a separate Eagle Scout court of honor. They can have it be whatever they want and invite whomever they want. It can be as long or short as they'd like. One thing I do know. We have between 3-12 Scouts a year earn Eagle. Nobody on the Committee or the Scoutmasters/Assistant Scoutmasters has the time to

  10. My son decided on joining a ship. He looked at two of them and choose the one that mainly sails sunfish and other small boats. He really liked the amount of freedom and control he was given. They capsized maybe 1 minute after starting, one of the Mates talked them through the process to right the boat from a chase boat. After that they where busy sailing all over the lake and each time they capsized they were able to right the boat pretty fast. It is nice seeing him excited about being involved again.

  11. My only suggestion is to NOT email anyone. Instead call them, or better speak face to face. Electronic communication appears efficient, and is, to disseminate information. It is wholly inadequate for discussion and conversations. Do call, and either set up appountments to discuss in person or on the phone. Otherwise you run a serious risk of being misunderstood at worst, and at best taking longer to get the answers you seek.

  12. SALEM, Utah — According to Salem Police Chief Brad James, a small group of Boy Scouts and their leaders were at the Knoll Park area of the pond practicing basic swimming . A 25-year-old Utah County Scout Master went in to the water to rescue a scout who was struggling and pushed him to safety, but the leader went under the water, according to James. https://fox13now.com/2018/07/18/boy-scout-leader-potentially-drowned-at-salem-ponds-police-say/ https://www.heraldextra.com/news/local/south/salem/scout-leader-drowns-in-salem-pond/article_d178de2f-0d78-58e9-bd06-e9a89af1d6be.html
