  1. I wanted to avoid the current topic as it's controversial. Perhaps I'm no better than the council and DE trying to shield information. But my frustration is not with the topic. It's with a repeated pattern that happens every time there is anything at all challenging or controversial. The volunteers are left out in front of the parents and scouts looking like the bad guy while still waiting for manna from on-high to be blessed upon us. It gets old. Current subject ... Membership changes. Talking points to share with units in the district, but the units are pretty much beyond those

  2. @qwazse 'veiled heroines'? Like the new Ms. Marvel....I rather like her... To be honest I am more Star Trek than Star Wars but broad minded enough to enjoy both universes*. I have an old acquaintance in the comics industry and you should read the threads that THOSE folks rage about...eclectic and opinionated group about culture in media. With pictures. *The Turtle teenage household DOES have a bitter dispute between the DC vs. Marvel universes that may need a latter-day 'Peace of Westphalia' to restore the domestic tranquility. And our dinner table (because we are one of those 'ever

  4. As the outgoing District Vice-Chair of Membership and the incoming District Commissioner, I helped get six new Crews started as we moved into the rechartering season and now am hoping to make sure these new Crews get all the support they need to be successful. This evening I hosted the first Venturing-specific breakout at our District Roundtable and all Crews were represented by at least one volunteer! I think the most important thing was for these folks to meet each other and know there are people they can lean on for help moving forward. I also facilitated a discussion on the ALPS (

  5. I mainly want to vent. I've been pretty much a BSA cheerleader and wear rose color glasses. But sometimes even I can get jaded. The slow roll out is killer. Nov and Dec round tables with no discussion. Now only some on cub scouts. Many people asking questions and all we can say is we haven't heard anything yet.

  6. BSA made their announcement Oct 11th or earlier. Our council should have started sharing immediately and continually ... even if it was as much as "we don't know yet". I'd like to give them the "doubt", but our DE and other council staff knew it was coming. It was just when would the announcement would occur. We tell our scouts to be prepared, but they were not prepared. Now, it's almost three months later and they have their first talking points about cubs. Nothing about Boy Scouts. Just limited talking points. I almost want to skip round table as it's sort of insulting and abso

  7. We kick them out the door. It's winter camping, they need to be sledding and having snow ball fights.

  9. I have hidden two posts in this thread, one because it contained a personal attack and the second (which was fine in and of itself) because it quoted the personal attack. Further action is possible after moderator review. The requirement to "be Scoutlike" may be applied slightly more leniently here in Issues and Politics, but it still applies. Personal attacks are not permitted.

  10. Oh, those youth movements that practically spawn themselves and the adults who won't say "no" to them.

  11. I completely agree. I am no longer with a troop but I have heard SMs in my district talk about “paper girl troops.” I have brought this up before at Council meetings and the topic is quickly changed, so it seems everyone is aware of the possibility.

  12. Sounds like my house. Eager to see the upcoming Black Panther movie. My sons have learned not to mention a certain name around me, the destroyer of worlds - Star Trek and Star Wars.

  13. Sadly, I've seen so many units do their own thing and ignore BSA policies, that I can believe a unit doing anything. Heck my own troop said they will ignore BSA upcoming policy on separate girls troops, and fully integrate girls with their own patrol. They would be a girls only paper troop. In fact one of the reasons we are now accepting girls is because of rogue units IMHO. SWMBO jokingly said once that she will cremate me and put my ashes in knee socks. I said "YES and bury me at these three camp...." I got 2 pairs in the safety deposit box. Currently 2 camps are w

  15. Sadly, my crew did not recharter this year. (It's complicated, but my one natural leader broke bad. The others couldn't/wouldn't regroup.) I'm still on our council's Venturing committee and am working to get three remaining crews in two adjacent districts to plan something together. So, you could say the sun total of our district's support for venturing is my spare time. :0 What would help? Scheduled yearly visits to every high school in the district. One flyer with the contact info of each crew.

  16. Hello all. First post on the forum. There are pros and cons with alcohol stoves. In my LNT Master Educator course we used them for all meals and it worked out well. One of the main reasons I like them is that the fuel is pretty nature friendly. As Stosh said, they can tip an spill fuel more easily than other stove types, making them a fire hazard. Not being able to see the flame does not help either. It also took a lot longer to boil water. After cooking with them quite a while, I went back to my Jetboil. It was worth the weight, and my alcohol stove was not worth the wait.

  17. I carry the Scout camp knife I had as a Scout. The only time I don't have it with me is when I am at airports since 9/11. My service stars from my scout days are still on my uniform today. The State strip from my scout historic uniform is the same one I had as a kid, I have changed out the community strip however. The pup tent I used as a scout is now used as a ground cloth to protect the floor of my tent or serve as a floor to my current military pup tent. My scout handbook is still on the shelf on my den.

  18. I was in cub scouts during that era and my dad was cubmaster. My recollection is he NEVER wore a neckerchief and slide of any kind. He did wear a long sleeve shirt and necktie. This is a photo of me getting my Bobcat badge, and that is my dad (CM) holding me.

  19. Viva Mexico! I actually think the international organization clause is intended for the scout who did that work, but didn't get recognition in the other movement. E.g., traveling with the family to wherever for a parent's sabbatical, a scout was active in a troop and camped/hiked with them there, but could not really earn recognition from that organization because the stay was to brief or awards weren't given for that sort of thing - as is common with many older scouts in other WOSM organizations. When the scout returns to a US troop, leaders might want it to count for something, because

  21. LOL @The Latin Scot, I've seen so many adults masquerading as DLs (patch included) that a youth actually doing the job and being recognized for it hardly concerns me. But then, in high school, my youth pastor took the age of accountability quite seriously, and 8th-12th graders were given full responsibility for classes younger students over the summer. That included leading relatively deep Bible study -- if we had read the thing at least once, as well as field sports and athletics. Our first year leading, we would have an adult partner with us, but in subsequent years we would be partnere

  22. How do the boys on coed teams feel? How do the boys feel playing against girls? I know my youngest hates the idea of girls joining Cub Scouts because he said it will ruin the program. When I asked why, he told me the story of the Boys Club and Girls Club the homeschool group had. Boys Club had a very active program, with lots of running around and Nerf gun fights. he didn't know what the girls did, but there was not a lot of attendance, and they started cancelling meetings. Someone came up with the idea of merging the two groups. Activities the boy wanted, life Nerf gun fights were stoppe
