Seriously? It has come to this?

Recommended Posts

Lack of gun control?  The perp had control of the gun, the girls only had laws to protect them.  Which was more effective?  Now I'm not advocating the Girl Scout start packing, but right in front of a public store?  What do these girls do in the neighborhoods when they go door-to-door?  Are they going to need a police escort?  Or at least one armed and trained parent?  As my thread title indicates - Has it really come to this?

Aw, come on gang,  it's a robbery, this poor excuse for a human decided it was an easy target.  He could've mugged somebody in the parking lot, but he chose the easy target. Gun control?  Doesn't help after the fact. It got so much news coverage because it was a Girl Scout, not an otherwise  poor woman or man  on the street.   Read  "The Weapon Shops of Isher " by Vogt.    Might as well blame the Boy Scouts for not getting this boy into a Scout Troop.  Might use this to talk about the need for after school programs, job training, better opportunities for youth,

Guns are used because they can be used, and they are often seen as the thing to use, and the easy thing to use.   Might blame media too, for modeling violent, use of guns to get what you want.  Work and cooperation is booooooring.   What did I hear on TCM this evening? speaking of old movies vs modern flics,  " back then we couldn't blow up buildings, so we had to have good stories and develop characters..."

A little humor goes a long way to address some very serious issues.  While not many GS's out there are going to be going around selling cookies with a 50 caliber sniper rifle, there are many precautions that need to be constantly reemphasized when participating even in what is considered a "safe" situation, like outside a public store in broad daylight.  In this day and age it is different than in years past.  The big issue for women was park your car in a well lit area.  Now it's don't sell cookies in front of a public store in broad daylight.  In between, one might want to be that much more vigilant and go as more than mom and daughter when selling door-to-door.  One can't be too cautious today.  We try to instill some common sense rules into how we address things like this, but even now common sense is no longer all that common.

Hmm, or is this an example of one really extreme situation being blown way out of proportion and broadcast everywhere to the point where all sorts of people think this is normal.

How many girls sell cookies? How many get robbed at gun point? Is it worse than the odds of being struck by lightening? Is it getting worse? If not, then maybe this is just sensational news used to get more clicks. You know, the same thing that's keeping kids from enjoying the outdoors.

There's bugs in the world, one doesn't want to be out there with Lymes, encephalitis, Rocky Mountain fever, Yellow Fever, malaria, West Nile, etc. etc. and add to that all the poisonous plants and venemous snakes and spiders, and, and and, and then there's the bears.  No wonder it's hard to get the boys out of the basement.

I don't even want to know what web site you went to to find that photo, Stosh.   :)

It's a small troop in eastern Ohio who currently holds the top spot for selling cookies.  The troop in second place has about 10% of that troops gross sales.

Media to blame lack of gun control rather than poor parenting in 3...2...1...

Is there any particular reason that it can't be both?

I don't think that with all the legislation in place we need any more.  The problem is not solved by adding more rules, the criminals don't follow them anyway.  Statistically speaking the places where there are more guns, more relaxed rules and where the rules are truly enforced have the lowest gun crime rate.

Then one has to take into consideration, knife control.  It would seem that ISIS has taken on that as a tactic.  I don't know of many knife control laws out there.  Next thing you know we'll all be eating our steaks like a Popsicle on a fork.

It's just a lot easier to have parents bring up their young with a respect for others and if we once again become a civilized nation without crime, even the conceal carry people will leave their guns at home.
