  1. I can't get into the "open discussions" forum. I can see the pinned topics but nothing else.
  2. I like it.....I would say go with a white t-shirt though.
  3. North Carolina got dragged into secession, while kicking and screaming, 150 years ago or so and it didn't turn out too well for us. I think we will pass on it this time.....no matter what Virginia and South Carolina decides to do. (This message has been edited by AlamanceScouter)
  4. My son's first camping trip as a Tiger was to Stone Mountain State Park in NC. Some great memories! Now he is only a couple of months away from being a Boy Scout.
  5. My son's first camping trip with his Pack when he was a Tiger was at Stone Mountain State Park. So terribly sad that this has happened.
  6. I wonder how many families actually sign up their sons at least partly due to the BSA's stance on homosexual leaders and belief in a god.
  7. Abel, I could be wrong but I don't think that I have ever seen you post anything positive about the Boy Scouts of America.
  8. I had great intentions of having my Webelos II's shower on Tues. night of resident camp but camp staff stopped by at around 9 pm and stayed LATE. Their parents got them back on Wed. smelly.
  9. I am trying to prepare my wife to "crossover" to Boy Scouts next spring...... Lol. I am going to have her read this thread. Lots a great information and thoughts.
  10. Thanks for the advice..........good things to thing about.
  11. Can I get your thoughts on something...... I am contemplating what my next role will be in Scouting after my Webelos II's cross over next March or April. One thing I have been thinking about is trying to get Scouting started back at our local Salvation Army. Our SA has had Scouting over the years but it has been lead by the officer and when he leaves it goes away until the next one who is interested starts it back up. It really bothers me that we don't have a steady program serving kids in that area. I know the SA fairly well because I am an advisory board member. I have been thi
  12. I just spent 4 days and 3 nights with 5 Webelos I's and 7 Webelos II's at resident camp. 9 and 10 year old boys staying 3 nights away from their parents with temps in the upper 90's are not losers. From my personal perspective....... I played football, basketball, and baseball growing up.....I was a cub for 1 year and a boy scout for less than a year. After I graduated from HS football was over, I gave up church league basketball in my late 30's because my body could not take the pounding and I hate softball. On the other hand.....through being a Scout leader I have discovered a lov
  13. I respect what they are trying to do. IMHO, there is nothing wrong with what they are trying to do. I do think a parr of this has to do with UW funding priorities but that ok too. I think it is obvious they are saying what we all say here.... Scout IT is not very good....but at least they know it.
  14. Humm.....not sure what to take from that presentation. I think part of what is behind this is trying to align the program with is what more and more United Ways are requiring in order to receive funding. It used to be if you were a UW agency and the UW raised more money in a campaign you received more money....if the UW raised less then you received less. United Ways are going to a community impact model where the community tells the UW what priorities they want addressed then human service agencies basically submit grant requests addressing how they will meet these priorities. The na
  15. Jgood, the SE in Wilmington, NC is originally from Kentucky and I am pretty sure has tons of connections throughout the movement. Maybe you should reach out to somebody like him......not for a specific job but as a mentor.
  16. Suzy, as others have said try to get the 2 boys to camp as provisional scouts registered under their old troop......I will just add that their summer camp experience will hopefully help them to be the anchors of the new troop once the Webelos cross over next March. Good luck and welcome to the board. You will learn more about how to do Scouting right here than most anywhere.........and folks like moose and SP...while they might disagree from time to time have great insight into the program.
  17. Welcome to the campfire and thanks for your service to our youth! This is a great place to learn about Scouting........it has helped me tremendously.
  18. I am not trying to discount your situation but the only answer is to find a new troop.
  19. Basement, I just don't know what to say to some of your posts other than I am darn lucky that I don't live in your part of Ohio. I truly do not have the kinds of Scout experiences you describe in many of your posts. Maybe we are just lucky to have the kinds of Scout programs and leaders that we have in my little part of the country.
  20. I am a DL and I have often thought about how hard I can be on my son during Scout events and Den meetings and how it is not fair to him. I think I know that I am so busy that I can't afford to let him get close to being out of line so I see the least little thing and I get on him about it. He is a good kid who is energetic.......I am just glad that he still wants to be a Scout!
  21. Lots of great advice on this thread. Here are a couple of things that I would add: * start thinking about how you are going to communicate with the parents. You need to find multiple ways to get information out to them. * find the most efficient and accurate way to get information from your council and district. That might be by attending Roundtables and/or the council website. * it is mind numbing to navigate but get familiar with the BSA national site. I really like listening to the monthly cubcast that is there. I am in my third year as a DL and am looking forward to
  22. I failed the swim check at Webelos Resident Camp last summer........I basically grew up on a lake and at the ocean. That was embarrassing to say the least......shaking my head.
  23. I might be wrong but I think Barry was using that analogy to represent the hundreds of boys he has worked with over the years. That is how I took it anyway. As a cub leader for 3 years now.....and having taken a group of Webelos to Resident Camp last summer it is great to see how much the boys grow in maturity when we let them explore.
