  1. Great character starts with "respect". If done right Cub Scouting teaches and/or reinforces that respect is essential.....respect for others, respect for leadership, respect for community, and most important, respect for yourself. I can't speak to Boy Scouting but from what I read hear and other places I believe continues the theme of respect.
  2. Welcome back....I am in the same shoes as you in that many of the parents of boys in my den are also 10-15 years younger than me.
  3. We found out late Sunday that our Pack would not be able to meet at our regular site due to it being closed for repairs. So.....we do what Scout leaders sometimes do....scrambled and went to plan B. We were actually scheduled to have a pack meeting but one leader made a call to a local volunteer fire department and the Tigers, Wolves, and Bears went there while the WB1 and 2 went to a leaders house for their meeting. The folks at the fire department did a great job....and of course the boys really enjoyed it and "probably" learned something that will serve them well in the future. As
  4. Penta....welcome to the forum! It will be great to have your perspective!
  5. My Bear den will be working on meeting in about 3 weeks from now.....the theme is "Law Enforcement is a Big Job". The boys did the police station visit as Tiger's and as Wolves. Does anybody have any good ideas for doing something different?
  6. Thanks for your post. We have an important mission as Scouters and being prepared for the worst is never a bad idea. I am sorry for your loss and I thank you for stepping up to help the Pack continue.
  7. Thanks bbender. I think the 2nd link you gave me will work the best with the new delivery method.
  8. sawdustr, looking for something where I can enter the info per boy.
  9. Has anybody seen a chart listing elements of achievements that achieved per week using the new delivery method? I imagine somebody has created one by now.
  10. How about a good local personal trainer leading the meeting? Maybe visit his/her gym.....
  11. Sounds to me like there are a bunch of very lucky Tiger Cubs somewhere..... Probably the makings of a very good patrol in about 5 years.
  12. I know a tax id is needed to open a checking account but I am not sure about the other items you asked about. Intuitively, it seems like creating this organization to own the Pack would be more difficult/risky/work than just going out and finding a willing existing non-profit to be your CO. Just some thoughts.....
  13. The policy states, as I understand it, that the Local Tour Permit is required for Pack trips of less than 500 miles. If my den has a field trip to....let's say the fire station.....and I have the parents just bring the boys to the station rather than the regular meeting place.....do I need to complete a Local Tour Permit?
  14. ScoutNut, yes, that is what I am referring to. As I lay it out, with our Pack's schedule at least, I can't get it done until the last week of February. Granted, we will take the week of Thanksgiving off and 2 weeks over Christmas break.(This message has been edited by AlamanceScouter)
  15. Has anybody else planned out their Bear den meeting yet? At least through completing the achievements for the badge? It looks to me the earliest that I can get my group there will be last week in February. Historically we have presented the rank badges earned at the B&G in February.....we are going to have to rethink that.
  16. This is an article written from a religious perspective but I thought fellow Scouters might find it interesting: http://fulleryouthinstitute.org/2009/08/just-guys/
  17. I was only in scouting a short time....Cubs maybe a year and Boy Scouts even less. I will never forget one particular experience in Cubs though. I guess I was probably a 3rd grader and we went to a Field Day type event in Wilmington, NC. At the event there were all types of athletic events and races. I kept winning and/or doing well in the races and I can remember to this day the sense of pride and confidence I gained from that day. During my short time in the Boy Scouts the best memory was my troop building a raft to take part in an annual raft race on the Northeast Cape Fear rive
  18. The only thing I am worried about regarding this matter is.... 1) How do I keep my 8 year old interested in Scouting so that he has an opportunity to do something like this and.. 2) How do I finagle myself on this types of trips when they occur in the future.
  19. I saw this aricle linked from the BSA's facebook page. Maybe this should be in the "issues and politics" section but I think it is ok here. In my opinion this is a very positive article: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/do-the-right-thing/201008/should-all-boys-become-boy-scouts
  20. My experience as a volunteer is probably different than most other "Scouters". I was a failed DE in the early 90's...was basically invited to find another job due to lack of performance. I went on to a different career and basically forgot about Scouting. Three years ago I was visited by a district level volunteer and the DE at the time and was asked to lead a part of the FOS. I accepted and the next year I was the district finance chair and lead the district's FOS with our new DE. During my time as the finance chair my son was in 1st grade and he came home with the "flier" early in th
  21. I am a DL in a Pack that has not historically taken part in the Popcorn Sales Fundraiser. I am not exactly sure why but "it is what it is". I think that I would like to advocate for our Pack taking part in it this year....basically for 2 reasons, first, I want us to do our part in helping our Council/District financially and, second, I want to start planning for my Bears to attend Webelos Resident Camp next summer. The cost is around $150 per camper and I know this will be difficult for some of my Scouts. Am I correct in that Popcorn sales can offset the costs of camp? My wife will be
