  1. Fish, I will be "transitioning" to Boy Scouts next March........I cant wait.
  2. I say don't do it unless it complies with BSA standards. If you are doing things within the rules and somebody gets hurt then "it is what it is". If you are doing something outside the lines and somebody gets hurt......somebody and/or the organization is going to go down.
  3. I read things like this on these message boards and it just makes me so thankful for our Pack. As others have said.......move this up the chain ASAP.
  4. The Old North State Council has 4 camps. The main Boy Scout camp where summer camp is held, Cherokee, is used by troops during the off season. Woodfield is primarily a Cub Scout camp used for the different cub o Rees and Webelos Resident Camp...packs use the bb gun and archery ranges at different times during the year.....packs camp there too. There is a primitive area that Boy Scouts use. We have a sea base located on a lake and it is used quite a bit......we also have a camp on an island in another lake. I think all of the camps are used by our troops, crews, and packs to a large exte
  5. I don't have any answers for you but that certainly sounds like a great adventure for your son. The Citizen activity pin should be interesting!
  6. You know Engineer......you are exactly right. It is a privilege for us to lead kids....very well said.
  7. He has been the CSE during the time I became a leader and during the time my son has been in Scouting........Scouting has become an important part of my family. I for one appreciate his service.
  8. One of the better things on the BSA website is the Cub Cast......unfortunately, they hide it.
  9. It seems to me that providing food to the volunteer workers is a legitimate part of the budget and should be funded. Of course, the cost should be reasonable.
  10. Waking up on a cold morning in a tent with my young son in his sleeping bag by my side.
  11. When I read the word "Scoutcraft" I think - outdoors skills such as camping, hiking, cooking outdoors, first aid, knots, etc. I am a novice to Boy Scouts as I have only been a Cub DL for a little over 3 years now. I have been coming to this message board almost daily for a couple of years and my impression from reading posts of experienced leaders (OP included) is that Scoutcraft is what everything is wrapped around if the program is run correctly. Leadership, community service, advancement....everything. Am I wrong??
  12. I would say the first thing to do is to get the parents of the remaining 8 cubs to step up into leadership positions...I bet there are at least 2 of them willing to work if they are asked. If the Pack is not active then I would work with the parents to plan a real exciting next 4 months for the Scouts.....lots of trips, some camping, etc. Get your Webelos I's and Bears to Webelos Resident Camp this summer. Start setting the stage to recruit new leadership during the next Fall Roundup. Finally, thanks to you and your family for always stepping up to help Scouting in your community.
  13. Our Pack's CM developed a Geocashing event during Halloween a year ago. He set up cashes in the woods behind the church that sponsors our Pack and the boys divided up into teams and off they went. Each station had a Halloween theme with all types Scout acitivities mixed in....it was a really good time for the boys.
  14. 3 Scouts got separated from their group but were found safe the next day. http://www.citizen-times.com/article/20111121/NEWS/311210018/3-missing-Boy-Scouts-found?odyssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext%7CFrontpage Hope the injured rescuer gets better soon.
  15. Well said! I have a den full of Dennis the Menace's.....one of them is my son. It is so cool to watch them grow up.....and dream......and achieve.
  16. I don't know anything about the issues there but John Meeks is a very good Pro and a very good man. He will do a great job until they find their next SE.
  17. Wow......The Old North State Council (NC) put on a great WRC. We attended the 5th and final session and took 3 WII's and 7 WI's. The II's worked on Geologist, Readyman, and Engineer and the I's worked on Aquanaut, Readyman, and Outdoorsman. We also had free swim time, map and compass, Geo-Caching, Fishing, Boating, Boot Camp (the camp had a military theme this year. Despite the crazy heat and humidity I think the boys had a great time and learned tons of new things. I have had the WI boys for 2 years now and it is a real pleasure to have watched them grow from young Wolves to the
  18. I know you all know that but.... Tonight was our last regular den meeting before we move into our summer program. We have our Pack meeting next week. Anyway, I am a Bear DL and I used part of our meeting tonight to go over some of the physical fitness things we covered last fall and periodically over the school year. Anyway, I have one boy who never finishes first in anything......but tonight he threw a softball like a MLB pitcher. It was so cool for him to finally be best at something. I don't make a big deal about who is who is first or best but I did a little more than usual
  19. I think as long as it is folded neatly it is not a big deal. It it is great that the Congressman sent the flag. I would cherish is if I were your son.
  20. The Christmas before last we purchased a BSA instant pop-up tent for our Cub. Both he and I have used it on numerous Pack campouts and it has worked great for us......and it has gotten us through some pretty big down pours.
  21. In this instance the only entity to "report" to is the Pack's Chartered Organization. If you "report" it to the BSA they will tell you to go to your CO.
  22. We camped at the Council Camporee the weekend before last. We spent 2 two nights on the USS Yorktown last weekend. We (well 6 of our Cubs anyway) took part in a special shooting sports day that our council puts on today. It not how I would have planned things out but it just how it all came together. I am glad we did it all but I am worn out right now.
