This is your lucky day! You guys get to do whatever you want. If you want to let your moms show pictures of you with your first PWD car fine, otherwise have fun.

Yeah, that was rather tame for BD. Only 7 question marks and one shouted word. No personal attacks, name calling or other unscout like behavior. BD, to be more exact. 1 question and 1 statement. So Exibar, that is a lot of scouting time. Do your participants normally put that much time into scouting ? My wife and cub son would have an issue.

Summer Camp - In Council or Out?
King Ding Dong replied to RandyPrice's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My council and/or OA requires in council every other year. (I know many have said they can't do that and I have not looked into it in depth yet.) It doesn't seem right to me, but we do have an excellent facility. The MB program is not as extensive as yours and seems weak on choices to me. I honestly would like to see scouts do 2 or 3 max and do them well and have some fun. 5 is to much. I would like to see a goal of traveling to a different region every other year. -
You need to help out with those older boys. Talk to your DE and see if there is a troop that can help them out with the PORs and OA. I think there is someone else on this board who appoints patrol leaders.....who is that ?

Should we go back to the old leather football helmets as well ? Climbing and rappelling ? They are safer on that belay than on a bicycle. Or should we do away with that as well ? Since when does a helmet ruin the enjoyment of cycling ? After 10 minutes I barely notice it is there. Even the pros use helmets.

Should units share the wealth?

To be clear I did not mean Boy Scouts with BS. -
Bazaar ? Hardly. It is entirely consistent with their desire for one party rule. I am trying to remember that other system of government with one party rule...... I just can't remember it right now. It will come back to me. Meanwhile let's get back to talking about barricades, you know the important stuff.

Skeptic, Speedo make the Vanquisher in -2.0 to at least -6.0 for less than $20. If your eyes are different you can buy two pairs and switch the strengths having a backup. My son is -2.5 and couldn't do a flip turn without them.

I completely agree open water is very different than a pool, but you need to be a real good swimmer to get much off the push unless the pool is less than 25 yards or meters. If they can pull off 72 flip turns in a 25 yard pool without choking once, I say they have it down. I think if the BSA wanted it restricted to open water they would have put it in the rules.

My youngest took a nasty spill on a park path when he was just getting the hang of it. Turned his head to far to yell something at me and went right over. He had a mild concussion and would have been a lot worse without that helmet. My neighbor at the time didn't make her kids wear one when tooling around on the street, only when they went on the bike path. He was a AF lt. Col. and an Academy graduate. Nuts. The most valuable possession our body has is the brain, without it everything else is just stuff.

How to scout a new troop ?
King Ding Dong replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I am really trying to get some more visits set up. Received a response back from my troop guide at IOLS and have some suggestions, she also said I should talk to our DE and I have a call into him. Also requested some suggestions from my patrol. A big troop I can see getting lost in, if they act as a troop and not patrols. Certainly less opportunity for PL but he is a way off from being ready for something like that and may never be. He needs experience and modeling to see how it is done, just not much opportunity for that in a young, low activity troop. The boy signs up for every opportunity at school and the troop as long as it doesn't involve a ball or running. -
Don't forget the 4 hours of conditioning requirement. Some camps have a program for it, others leave it up to the unit leader to enforce it. My unit leader does not.

How to scout a new troop ?
King Ding Dong replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I hear you JoeBob and if he wants to stay where he is that is fine. But he needs to know what the alternatives are and where I see our troop headed. Several of the key players are moving on at the end of the year and unless the parents of the new crossovers really step up there are going to be big problems. There is no obvious SM replacement and once the ACs son gets his Eagle the AC is done. There are no ASMs. The CC is doing her job but is burning, and one of her sons dropped and the other seems rather indifferent to the whole thing. These are issue he is not aware of or should he be at this point. There are only 5 camping nights on the schedule this fall and one night is that hotel room in a cave we already discussed. He will likely only get in one night on the backpacking outing because he is the only one not backpacking. (We hashed that out in the Tune-up thread). There are six camping nights in the spring and a cabin weekend. No day hikes or other activities scheduled. Oh and I just found out the committee bungled the summer camp lottery, so we will have to pick the dregs after the whole council gets their shot. Unforgivable. Our good friend BD has been screaming at me for a while to find a new troop. I am finally getting off the pot. Second son is a Bear, loves camping but is ready to leave after breakfast. 3 mile hike is about his limit. Guess it's the age, he bores quickly. A lot can happen in two years. He is the more social one so what his friends do will have a big impact. -
Yes. But if the swimmer stops at the wall or stands in shallow water I personally would disqualify.
-
Not arguing what is the right way, however in very bike friendly Denver they routinely give traffic citations to cyclists who violate traffic law. I had a friend mangled by a vehicle not respecting his presence, he survived but can't ride anymore. Personally I think it is irresponsible for the BSA require children to ride a bicycle in urban traffic for the MB.

Keep printing out pages from the GTA and highlighting the relevant sentences. They will catch on soon. -
Should units share the wealth?
King Ding Dong replied to Basementdweller's topic in Unit Fundraising
BD you may not want to try it in your immediate community. Market it across the beltway. but make sure their sanitation engineers don't do it for free already. I have lived in a lot of places over the years and most, but not all, municipalities have a date or week where they pick them up for free. Do your research. Now if you can get your hands on a chipper, make mulch and have the boys deliver it in the spring.....have any vacant lots around ? -

Java, JavaScript, VB, Python, COBOL, C++, C# and I dabble in half a dozen others. -
But can that crew member be "prepared to pass those requirements" ? Only if it a boy and in a troop.

Should units share the wealth?
King Ding Dong replied to Basementdweller's topic in Unit Fundraising
Just remembered years ago the radio station did free concert in the park and was going to serve free tube steaks and burgers. Health dept required us to serve "out a covered window". So local soda bottler loaned us trailer and donated a bunch of cornies of syrup. Food went from Webers in trailer wrapped in kabnitwax and out window. Seemed totally stupid to me, but we were able to serve free fountain soda. -

BZZZZZZ. You lose King Spelling Bee. It is Sarah. But your point is taken. I constantly shudder at the politicians who blast education and science.
