Water purification systems
VentureScoutNY replied to Bob White's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
If your backpacking, I would depend on the iodine tablets. They aren't the best tasteing, but it works. If you add flavoring to it, that helps. Also if you bring a tight material, to strain out particles before you add the iodine tablets, that does a good job sifting the yuck out. -
No Bob, that has never been our goal or purpose...it is just a reality that comes with being a part of the organization. It's funny this post came up today. I wrote a paper (handing it in today) on how the Boy Scouts of America's Image has changed due to America's changing views on what masculinity is and how it relates to American Boys. Also how no matter how much the image changes, we expect scouts of today to embody what Scouts of yesterday stood for, and what scouts of tomorrow will inherit and uphold. The paper was not a research paper, so I do not answer may questions in it. I discuss ideas of what has changed in Scouting, and what will continue to change. It is a study, on how one WOULD find an answer to the question. My sources include as much Boy Scout literature I could find and academic journals that give their 2 cents on what masculinity is, and how it changes through the years. The paper is sort of a mini study, just scratching the surface. My conclusion came to be that yes, The Boy Scouts of America have changed due to America's changing views of masculinity. But I stessed the fact that as much as the IMAGE changes, through unifoms, new and different activites, and changing perceptions of what an American boy should represent, the core values of a Scout stay constant. Eamonn, I have Normal Rockewells all over my room. His image of what Scouts should portray is awesome.

Your an Eagle Scout forever. It's something we can be proud of, so I say, you can write it down as long as you'd like to. -
A President of the United States not endorsing the BSA
VentureScoutNY replied to VentureScoutNY's topic in Issues & Politics
Acco: The BSA has been endorsed though, since 1916 if I am correct?...by both the President of the United States and Congress. Are you saying we should sever ties? -
Eamonn, that's a ncie deal huh! As a Scout, I always wore boots form payless. The reason why? They were cheap, and I'd grow out of them quickly. Right now I have a size 8 1/2 shoe, and it looks like thats the way it will stay. A few years back though, I wanted the best boots I could find. We were preparing for a Summer Trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains and I put the best pair of boots I could find on my wish list. I searched and searched until I could find brown leather, to match my uniform. Finally I decided on L.L. Bean's Classic upland Boots. They are water proof and ride high about 8 inches I think. Besides the fact that the height helps wehn hiking, and preventing twists, I can tuck my pants in the boots and look pretty neat. I am on my second pair now, a size bigger than the palst pair. They are simple boots imo. The only problem is the price at $129. I have found they are an excellent boot for almost all Scouting events, with the exception of winter camping. They are not made for warmth. Scouters VS Non-Scouters

I did not want to start a new thread for this so I'll post it here. Tonight I went to an Alan Jackson concert, he's a country singer for those of you who don't know. I was there with my girlfriend and her parents. Anyway... Martina McBride opened the show, and Alan Jackson was the head liner. His first songs starts up, everyone stands up, and the party starts! Not 30 seconds of me standing up when a woman behind me taps me on the back. She says, "Can you sit, my daughter can't see". First of all if I was blocking someones view at any other event, I would move, or sit. But this is a concert! I can't believe she asked me this and I reply " We're at a concert". I turn around continue to dance and clap, and she taps me again. She says "Don't be an ***hole, sit down now". NOW...I am really ticked off. How dare she say that to me, especailly at a concert where 10 thousand people are standing up! But I should sit, because her daughter can't see... The daugter looked like she was probably 3 years of age. I stayed cool though as I usually do, and I reply " I paid $50 for this seat, there are thousands of people standing up, I'm sorry". I than whisper to my girlfriend what happend, and she can't believe the woman said what she said. My girlfriend could tell I was ticked off and replied " Of all people your an ***hole? Look at your buckle and let it go, your an Eagle Scout". (I proudly wear my Eagle Scout buckle daily) Anyway, I just though I'd share that with all of you. I think they should post on tickets for concerts "Warning: People will be standing up having fun at this show, sorry for the inconvience, TS" -

CAMPAIGN TO GIVE A BIG HUG TO THIS USER: MRSSMITH

Mrs.Smith : "4. For Pete's sake, does everything have to be spelled out around here? Decent, Dissent, Descent. Play on another thread where some poor guy was being ridiculed for not using spell check. (another example of IN MY OPINION a lack of Scout Spirit on display there). Again, I never said anyone was indecent. " DECENT------->I'm a fast typer..what can I say... but it's all sticks and stones..sticks and stones.. Everyone has a right to their opinion, even if it may be a sarcastic one. It is our Scout Spirit, that can enable us to deal with most people, put a smile on our face, and keep on truckin'. I agree with Unc "Now let's hug and have that cup of coffee." -

Go with what the PLC decides. I don't know if I would let the 2 Flamming arrows decide on which patrol they want to be in...what if that patrol they choose does not want them. If one of them decides they want to be with the older boys, maybe the other will also. Maybe the enitre NSP patrol will want to also be with the older boys. Stick to your set up as it is, let the PLC decide whether the boys should be able to choose, or told where to go. I agree with Eamonn, 3 patrols may be the way to go. If you have 24 scouts, in 5 patrols, thats 4-5 boys in each patrol... 2 boys dont show up one night, there is hardly any patrol. Bring this up to the PLC and maybe 4 patrols should be formed, or even 3... Depends on how many active scouts you have... Goodluck, keep us updated.

Welcome Newbies, Lurkers, and Geezers
VentureScoutNY replied to purcelce's topic in New to the Forum?
Ok, I'll bite into this one... First off, I'm from Long Island, New York. I have been involved in Scouting all of my life, from a Tiger Cub, to becoming an Eagle Scout in 2003. As a Boy Scout I was a PL, SPL, JASM, and an ordeal member of the OA. I'm a first generation Eagle Scout in my family, but am preceded by many former Boy Scouts, and Explorer Scouts. Currently I'm a Venturer, and an ASM in my Troop. I collect Boy Scout memoribilia including Uniforms, hats, and equipment. I am finishing up my second year of College as a Public and Professional Communications major. My goal is to become a Professional Scouter. YIS -

An entirely new meaning to "a scout is thrifty"
VentureScoutNY replied to eisely's topic in Open Discussion - Program
FOG makes a good point, $40,000 isn't a days milk money. Must have been serious book-keeping errors. A scout is Thrifty- A scout works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for the future. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property. If she helped others with the money she stole, is she a good Scouter?! I wonder what she was saving the money for, or did she save it? Did she throw any money towards Niagra Falls from her heavy purse, that would help in environment... But she wasn't too careful was she? She WAS caught... Lesson learned: The bad guy(girl) always loses! ;-) -

About those stars...
VentureScoutNY replied to SCOUTER-Terry's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
Well Shell, I suppose green bars would be similar to stays, but differnt also. They may also be a distraction, but once you have one, and than 2, and so on, they never go away...unlike stars that come and go. The Green bars would be solid. And....I was looking to the right of my screen and saw Green Bar Bills, Green Bars! -

The stars are a distraction, I vote them away. What about some kind of symbol for new forum member, junior forum member, forum member, and senior forum member? Maybe green bars? -
Very well said Beaver.

Im going to vent a little here... In this world we live in, how many of us encounter unpleasant people? This is something we all must live with on a daily basis. Whether in the work place, or on a college campus. It seems the world is full of these unpleasant people. By unpleasant I mean, they are nasty/mean spirited, untrustworthy, selfish, and cold. I find myslelf surrounded by these people here in college. People that if you ask them to "wait up" for you, they will not. People that come into your room, and take things without asking... food etc... Scouting has taught me values that I live by everyday from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep at night. I always am ready and willing to give to others and help someone out. I have noticed in this life, that meeting people that hold similar values to your own are hard to find. With the exception of your family, and close friends, it is difficult to trust someone. When I encounter a Scouter on the other hand, even if that person is a stranger, I know off the bat something about that person, especially a fellow Eagle Scout. In MOST cases, ( I know of two Eagle Scouts that I wouldn't trust, and can't imagine who they paid off to earn the rank and respect of an Eagle) scouters are descent people. They are caring, and understand right from wrong. They are always willing to lend a hand. Wouldn't it be nice to be around descent people all the time? Ok, I have vented. (this post does not imply that people that are not scouters are not descent people)
