  1. All of Scouting's History from Cubs to Explorers from Sea Scouts to Venturers is all good and great. I enjoy Scouting's great history, and I enjoy to share what I know of it with others, but never at the expence of the Future.
  2. dana_renner: Can you please just subit your messgae once. Just click once, you do not need to double click.
  3. Well, I am not sure about Officialy, when it comes to the uniform as a whole. In my Troop, we had a Patrol also create their own emblem and name, they called themselves the Piranha Patrol. They used markers and fabirc paint as well. BSA does sell blank patches, so I would assume it would be officil when it comes to the uniform inspection. The final decesion may land in the hands of your unit leaders or the PLC.
  4. szelenskei, You know you cant just click "post reply" to reply to somes post. You do not need to create a new thread. Welcome to the Forum!
  5. As a Venturer, I do believe that it is important to know where we came from and the History of programs past. Do all of my fellow Venturers believe this? Maybe some, and not others. When it comes to "if it aint broke don't fix it". Obviosuly BSA wanted to fix something when they created Venturing. They wanted a NEW program. Yes is does seem similar to the Explorer Scouts, and Explorers of the past, but it is not the same thing. We are dealing with a NEW youth and a NEW program. Although, I am a History Buff, and think it is crucial we know where we came from to know where we will be going; but than again, as much as I want to tell the History, I may find my Scouts my fellow Venturers asleep. Some people don't know and don't care where and what the program evolved from. They care about where they are now, and what they are doing today. When it comes to a program guide I lean with Bob, the Venturing Leaders Handbook does the job. Venturing a next step for Boy Socuts? Maybe, maybe not. I was also not around when Explorer Scouts was around, but from what I have heard from former Explorer Scouts, is that, that is where they went after they attained their Eagle rank. When a Boy Scout turns 18 he is gladly welcome to become a Venturer. Is it the next step? Depends on the Scout. PS.. I prefer Paul McCartney and Wings...
  6. Interesting...will you be doing this single handedly? Have you discussed this with your DE, or National?
  7. True, you would think that since Venturing is geared more toward high adventure, they would offer different materials for unifoms.
  8. Does the school your degree is from have any pros or cons? I go to a state school, nothing fantastic. Will that hurt me in any way?
  9. From the BSA website: "One of the causes contributing to the success of the Boy Scouts of America has been the thoughtful, wholehearted way in which each President of the United States since William Howard Taft in 1910 has taken an active part in the work of the movement. Each served as Honorary President during his term in office." With all of the recent controversies over gay marriage and religion that has swept the nation, will they eventually lead to a President of the United States not endorsing a program that may be conservative in its ideals? Many of the ACLUs attacks on the BSA include these issues. In my opinion, I do not see any time in the near future when a President does not endorse the BSA. I would also hate to think of a time when this country does not apperciate the greatness of a Program we are all apart of and respect. But who really knows? Fifty years ago intergration of public institutions and schools also seemed to be a far off matter... What do all of you think?
  10. Thats awesome! I never knew that you could get a Uniform shirt, and pants in different materials. Why is this option not available for youth??
  11. Very interesting...Does it leave any marks on the clothing after applied? How about on a Uniform shirt? After a wash do you need to re-apply?
  12. This was recently discussed at: http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=53392#id_53392 Check it out and post there, bring it back to life, some good ideas for a new uniform there.
  13. I know that in order to become a Boy Scout a Boy must first learn and explain the Boy Scout Oath, law, Slogan and motto. These represent the foundation of his life in Scouting. It is common when learning a saying, prayer or song, that people will just speak them without thought. They are remembered and spit out on command or when needed. My question is, over time, do boys forget what they mean, and what they stand for? Are they just a bunch of words? Does your unit have teach the Scouts what they mean yearly? Reminders?
  14. On My Honor: Boy Scouts and the Making of American Youth by Jay Mechling I have read the reviews of the critics, now I'd like to hear your thoughts. For those of you who have read it... Comments? Good read?
  15. I am not all too familiar with scotchgaurd. I have heard of people putting it on their campaign hats. Is scotchgaurd flammable?
  16. Today I was talking with a fellow Eagle Scout, and he told me that he used to use some kind of spray on his unifom pants before he went camping. When it rained the water beaded off of them. He couldn't remember what the spary was called. Is there such a thing? Or was he pulling my chain...
  17. For all you Professionals, What are your duties and responsibilities on a day to day basis? What kind of objectives do you set for yourself as a professional scouter? How would you define your job?
  18. Hmmm, the old uniform was green but called kahkai, the current uniform is kahaki but is called tan. Got It. Anyway... That is interesting Proud Eagle that an entire Troop wears the old style Uniform. That must be quit a site to see. I always thought it was cool, to this day, seeing some of the older scouters wearing their original uniforms. Gives for nice stories to the younger scouts.
  19. Why does BSA provide the option for temporary patches and not temporary pins? I have seen patches in the plastic flap that were not officially BSA. For example, one that says West Point NY. That is not a BSA patch but does fit in the plastic flap, and a scout could have bought it at West Point on a Scouting trip. Is that allowed?
  20. Dave: You have a Scout Uniform designed by Ralph Lauren? Can you Provide for us a picture of it? What does it look like? Is it a BSA Uniform?
  21. VentureScoutNY

    Pins

Are there any pins that can be worn on a BSA Uniform besides year pins? I have seen many scouts both Venturers and Boy Scouts that have had some kind of 9/11 remberence pins on their uniforms. Is this allowed? What are the rules when it comes to pins?
  22. Bahamas High Adventure Trip: Any one ever gone? Know someone who has? There are two different Trips on the Florida Sea Base website concering trips to the Bahamas, whats the difference between the two? There is a Bahamas Tall Ship Adventure and also Bahamas Adventure.
  23. Lets say there is a Trip that a few Venturers want to go on, but do not have enough Scouts interested, or adults. Lets say an adult Boy Scout Troop leader is interested and has some Boy Scouts interested in going on that trip. Can a mix of Venturers and Boy Scouts from a few different Troops or Venturing Crews form one crew for the trip? Also, can some Eagle Scouts that are not registered with a Troop anymore go? Do they need to register to be able to go on a trip? I would think it would be ok, since all are registered members of the BSA... But Im not sure, so I'm asking all of you for your expertise on this one.
