  1. Agreed, but lets make it easy: Go camping Have trained leaders Who cares how many Court of Honors you have of if you do a budget? Maybe your unit does't emphasize advancement or recruit Webelos When our Roundtable Commish held up the JTE form in front of all the WDLs and says "This is how you should be judging what units your Webs go to" I decided I would not participate. And if your unit doesn't fill it out your DE will do it for you. He'll even sign it for you!
  2. "So I've asked each scout in a POR to get with their ASPL and define what they will do during their tenure. That's what they will be held to. I'm afraid some won't meet what they have written down." I can hears some parent crying "You're adding to the requirements"! I'm gonna start doing this, thanks for the idea. BD, Good response, let the scout figure it out. Personally, I'd take Librarian, Historian and QM off the table since he turned them down. But that's just me, I don't tolerate lazy very well. You could assign him a leadership project that will help the troop. I've got a scout who is setting up and running an open house/recruitment day for us. He is setting up the program (an all day event with lots of activities) and visiting all the Webelos dens in our area and inviting them.(This message has been edited by Eagle732)

  4. Problem is they're BSA's goals, not the unit's goals.
  5. Agree. We scored Gold last year and will not participate this year. I've got better things to do than compile data for the Professionals. I considered letting the scouts do it but they have better things to do with their time too. Now if someone can convince me of the importance of JTE then maybe I'll reconsider.
  6. eisely, thanks for the insight. " I also understand that, due to the volume of threats and hate messages, the SM has temporarily moved his family out of town." This is shameful. Wonder who's threatening the SM? Could it be the ones who demand tolerance from everyone but themselves? "BSA National could easily climb down a bit if it wanted to do so." They could but they won't. It would show weakness and encourage other who would expect the same bending of the rules (for any reason) when enough pressure is applied. I think it's quite plausible that someone went to the Charter Organization with information on the boy (maybe his website) and they decided the boy would not be awarded Eagle. It seems like the ones who count in the troop (SM and CC-dad) were on board but someone higher up put the stops to it. If you missed the Ellen interview you can see it on Youtube here: Very nice interview but a little short on facts.
  7. Another point of view, maybe we're not as bad as everyone wants to makes us out to be. http://www.delmarvanow.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20121001/NEWS01/121001008/Boy-Scouts-report-pedophiles-missed-previously-?odyssey=nav%7Chead&nclick_check=1
  8. We don't fill out the JTE form but maybe we should give it to the PLC and let them do it. My guess is it wouldn't get done.
  9. "hmmm Eagle you know way too much about this fellow???????? " Google is your friend The boy will be a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres show so we'll all get to see him in person. Also he is 18 years old now. Sucks when a group has standards they uphold. SM tried to work around the gay thing until they went public. They want the attention more than the Eagle. We'll see if dad can't buy it for him. Lisa, you said that I wouldn't post information on one of my boys here and said I was unethical. I promise you if I made the decision not to sign off on Eagle for one of my boys because he posted on the internet for the public to see, disgusting language and statements obviously counter to BSA's ideas and then made a public spectacle of my decision by talking with every news outlet in the country then I would certainly share the information as part of an explanation as to why I made the decision. Sorry you were offended, I was offended too. I don't have a problem with the boy being gay. I do have a problem with boys placing in the public domain personal information that shows they are not living up to the Ideas of Scouting including ANY type of sexual content. That is why I posed the question "if I looked at your your Facebook page would I see you're living up to the ideas of scouting". As a side note I am probably the only person here who has actually been subpoenaed and had to appear in court over internet use involving Scouting. (This message has been edited by Eagle732)
  10. BD, the company touts itself as the largest property management firm in the San Francisco Bay area. 2,300 units, 75 employees. (This message has been edited by Eagle732)
  11. I wonder if talking to every new agency in the country and starting a petition will help his appeal with National? BD - Dad owns a property management firm. (This message has been edited by Eagle732)
  12. "If the Scout directly stated that he disagreed with the Duty to God, then he is pretty much stating that he is not eligible for membership. You can disagree with the BSA on many topics without violating anything that is explicitly listed as a membership criteria, but every application says that you need to recognize an obligation to God in order to be a member." The kid says he is an "Agnostic" Look it up and read it yourself. Maybe that's what his SM saw before he decided not to sign off.
  13. No warnings using Firefox but Safari sure doesn't like this site since the shut down. Wonder why?
  14. Public information which took me about 30 seconds to find. Let's not discuss the way this lad is leading his life, let's just talk about how the big bad BSA is discriminating against him.(This message has been edited by Eagle732)
  15. Would this be our young Mr. ? (Sorry, I don't agree with putting up his name, OGE) Someone here once said that an interesting Scoutmaster's Conference question was "If I looked at your Facebook page would I see that you're living up to the Ideas of Scouting?" 16. So does this mean my flaming aerosol powered potato gun is against the rules?
  17. Currently 5 of 30 of my scouts are home schooled, I've probably had a over a dozen during the last 5 years. They have all been very polite and hard working. It appears they all come from stabile homes (mom and dad together) with strict upbringing. Parent were great too, always willing to help. In fact this current group has parents who are ASMs (2) and MCs (2). I'd take a whole troop of home schooled boys if I could find them. Scouting counts towards their schooling somehow, maybe physical education?(This message has been edited by Eagle732)
  18. Or " I got a partial at summer camp because no body told me I had to track (insert requirement here) for 30 days" I always wonder why it was too much trouble to read the requirements BEFORE summer camp!
  19. "What just gets under my skin and what made me lose my cool earlier was that people seem to pretend that the BSA does not discriminate (legal or illegal) and not acknowledge that for some people that is why they leave." Outdoors, Please site how BSA illegally discriminates. I guess some people might leave over BSA not allowing gay leaders but I haven't seen it. I have personal seen families leaving over these "discriminatory" practices: A Cub quit because the family were atheists and didn't feel we should have "Scout's Own" service on camping trips. Obviously we discriminated against their religious rights. A Scout left because we wouldn't let his mom's "significant other" go camping with us unless he registered and took YP. Found out later he had a child abuse charge. The individual had done his time but we still discriminated by not letting him attend. A 16 year old Scout left because we wouldn't let him cheat on his Eagle project. Apparently we discriminated since every boy has the right to be given the Eagle award irregardless of their Scout Spirit. And of course there's all the typical reasons such as sports, after school activities, boredom with the program, divorce, etc. But leave because BSA doesn't allow gay leaders, nope, haven't seen it. Also please note that I was able to make my point without inappropriate language or name calling.
  20. Questions to all you MBCs out there: Do you accept partial requirements as completed? When a scout calls for an appointment and tells you its for a partial do you tell him he needs to be prepared to review all requirements? Just wondering, I haven't done any partials yet.
  21. Lots of ASMs doesn't equal lots of help. Sounds like burn out. Happens, especially when the SM ends up doing the CC job too. Maybe he needs some help, ever consider signing up?
  22. "female crew members who were not adequately clothed." "reports of inappropriatly-clad Venturers" Would anyone like to expand on these two statements?
  23. Yea, BD you could have just handed him the badge, what's wrong with you? Meany!
  24. Oh for heaven's sake, there's too many damned rules!
