  1. "I really don't say much at home about what goes on at work." I understand that Eamonn, 30+ years in a large metro fire department and I never talked about what happened at work and my family knew better than to ask. Ignorance is bliss. And yes when you see the suffering of others you are constantly reminded that we are blessed.
  2. Along with what DeaRX said, don't register them if you don't have cash in hand! Just let them know that they will have to fill out another application when they pay their dues if they pass the deadline but that they are still welcome.
  3. "Organizations that apply should demonstrate that they are competent to manage a program with low administrative expenses and that they do not discriminate with regards to who the program will benefit." Well any organization that has membership requirements "discriminates" in regards to who their program benefits. Obviously a Troop or Pack doesn't benefit girls.
  4. I though some councils had a method to test out. I have two new ASMs, both have boys in my troop and also in our pack. They spend a lot of time doing Scout stuff. Neither one would get much out of ILOS, one's an Eagle and the other a Lifer who is an avid outdoorsmen. Why not waste more of their time since they're not doing enough as it is? I did have one ASM go last year who had no background in Scouting, for him it was worth the cost and effort.
  5. I notice he didn't respond to my counterpoint. The unemployment reports will tell us the truth.
  6. Nonsense Beav? Right now thousands of small business owners (with more than 50 employees) are deciding how many full time employees are going to be reduced to part time or let go to avoid paying mandated health care or the associated fines. "That's what financiers are lookin' at." No that's what small business owners, who finance their own ventures are looking at.
  7. Brew, I agree. It's all basic. Many business owners were waiting for the outcome of the elections to gauge the economic outlook for the near future. That being decided, they will adjust accordingly. The other comments here are just emotional bs.
  8. Backroads, I've been involved in Scouting for over 20 years. I don't consider it a "hobby" which is what you called it. Hobby seems to diminish the level of commitment one. I've met and had to deal with more than a few professionals who seem to think that because they get paid they are better or more important than the Scouters. On the other hand the vast majority are good, hard working, dedicated people.
  9. Same with "know" and "no" or "your" and "you're"
  10. "If you're teaching the Scouts under you that being rude, irresponsible, and unprepared is not only acceptable but ideal, perhaps you should find another hobby." Good comeback Backroads, the problem is obvious.
  11. If we bug you then maybe it's time to look for another job where you don't have to work with the public.
  12. My COR, CC and myself (SM) are all in agreement on one thing. Adults (registered members or not) are expected to live up to the Scout Oath and Law. Those that don't are shown the door. If the issue is program related what do the boys and the SM want? And if other adults want a change is someone else prepared to take the SM job? We only appoint SM and ASMs for a one year term. That stops a lot of complaining,(This message has been edited by Eagle732)
  13. Eamonn, My comments were not meant to call into question your bosses personal life but rather the organizations that he associates.
  14. Our troop never runs a deficit. Unlike the federal government we can't print more money. If we don't have it we can't spend it. Instead we work for the money we need by holding fundraisers, and we only do as much fundraising as needed. Your unit is $2,300 short, where did it go? A Scout is Thrifty, time to tighten the belt. 15. So your boss leads a squeaky clean life? No association with organizations that have had problems in the past, like maybe a Church?
  16. "The codes are not secret...they are listed on the Adult application...they are what's keypunched into the computer. Think of it as an "abbreviation" if that makes you feel less paranoid." The codes are secret and meant to confuse Scouters. Same with having Gold for the top ranking of JTE, everybody knows silver is higher than gold in Scouting. All meant as a diversion to keep us from looking at the man behind the curtain.
  17. We can't change the past, we can only influence the future. I believe today BSA is doing a good job educating and preventing child abuse. I also believe they were in many respects ahead of the times with their files. The original sex offender registry.
  18. "what's a seagull poster?" My guess is a poster who squawks a lot but doesn't say anything. Don't look up when the seagull posters are flying around! Seriously, treat the boys the same as the others with the knowledge that those horrible thing that happened to them will effect them for their entire lives.
  19. Hey the SpiralScouts support paganism. I just think their name is cool
  20. There's always the SpiralScouts www.spiralscouts.org
  21. Maybe if we can just get him featured in Boy's Life's "Scouts in Action" mom will be happy.
  22. Assisted a 70 year old woman who fainted in church. Placed the woman in the shock position (raised her legs) Communicated with the family. Sounds like a good deed which any real scout would have done without expecting payment wether in the form of money or a medal. This sounds more like a mom wanting to promote her son.
  23. Our leaders pay the same as the Scouts. We eat as an adult patrol, and we eat well too!
  24. SS, nice story. I agree that it's plausible. For the rest of the story how about this for a headline in the local newspaper; "Scout cuts foot of with ax on first caping trip, parents file suit against Scoutmaster"
