  1. If a $100 per person then Alex, I'll take No Adults on Patrol Outings for $50. P.S. Disney+ reportedly launches in Nov. at $70/year.

  2. Our small pack has struggled with getting parents to volunteer. The Cubmaster has been doing three or four jobs. In May and June we sent out emails and asked for help at the end of year pack meeting. Only one adult stepped up. We really thought that we would not be able to re-charter this year because we didn't have enough adults. Through my travels (BALOO or maybe on this forum) I was given the seed of an idea that ended up working well, so I wanted to share. During our first pack meeting of the school year (tonight), adults were asked to fill out a small name tag to stick to their shirt whe

  3. We've all of the ways @Eagle94-A1 describes. It depends on the personality of the scouts and the nature of the event.

  4. Sounds fair. I think there's another issue. Where does this drive for efficiency come from? Scouts are busy. Parents are busy. Everyone is trying to cram more into a week. Asking for more volunteer hours is like squeezing water from a rock. Unfortunately, scouting growth is kind of like a good loaf of bread, it takes time to rise. The longer it takes the better it tastes, and using yeast can really wreck it, not to mention make it less nutritious. (Can you tell I'm hungry?) I was surprised the first time a scout told me one of the best things about scouts is you can just hang out wit

  5. Is it about efficiency or just not trusting the scouts? Not trusting them to "do it right," not get in trouble, not get someone hurt or not believing that they can eventually figure it out?

  6. The Scout Law is sufficient as overarching principles, but to assert that the SL is the only rules needed is incorrect. First off, if this were the case, there would be no need for Youth Protection guidelines. Communicating expectations regarding behavior, and consequences falls under the category of helpful.

  8. Why? They get a paycheck -so what? Why does that mean they need to get grief for this? Scout Executive's do have a channel into national - so maybe. But a local District Executive is an initial professional job in the BSA. DEs are employed by local councils who are separate from the national organization as well. They are not talking with anyone at BSA national about fees. No one at national is going to get a report from a DE who says "a parent in Troop 123" is angry about the new fee model. I talk quite a bit with our local DE. I have a good sense of what he knows, what he doesn'

  9. Try paying for 4, 5 if they charge MBCs. I see Trails Life getting a huge membership jump.

  10. WHOO mercy! $100 per person?! I can't afford that ... if this really does take effect next year, I'm in hot water. I can't take a bite like this out of my budget. I hope this is only hearsay.

  12. First, download the Troop Committee guidebook, or purchase a hard copy from your local council store. These are the tools you will need to explain the positions for new recruits Recruit a secretary, and a treasurer as these two positions are the most critical. Set a goal with your new recruits to take YP if needed. Once the recruits are fully registered, then they should proceed to take the relevant committee member training. School teachers, social service folk, and military folk generally make good committee candidates. Avoid those retired scout leaders who talk a good talk, and b

  13. Have your patrol(s) meet separately every week for a month. Only then have troop meetings - to the extent that they do not interfere with patrol meetings. "If it's not happening in the patrol, it isn't so."

  14. First step I would suggest is the troop committee all take the training together. This way they begin on the same page, understanding their roles/responsibilities and excising the pre-concieved beliefs which are not part of their roles.

  15. The main responsibility of the CC is protect the vision of the program. Everyone likes to give the SM credit for being the gatekeeper, but the responsibility initially falls on the CC who insures the SM runs the program to the vision. If the SM is running the program appropriately, then the CC supports and protects the SM. Part of that support is delegating responsibilities in the weaknesses of the program. Learning the weaknesses answers your second question. Barry

  16. One area in which we all can improve is the removal of barriers to the Patrol Method. In general, all of the things adults do to make it easier or more efficient which could be done by scouts may be barriers to developing the patrol method. For example, adults towing the troop trailer which stores equipment to the campout for easy access to gear which allows scouts to go back/forth whenever something is needed. This habit denies the patrol the opportunity to communicate, plan ahead, and learn to cooperate. Better would be the following: While planning the outing, the patrol determines whi

  17. 9/28-29/19: Andy Hamilton’s interest in Native American culture began with the Boy Scouts. After being inducted into the Order of the Arrow honor camping society within scouting, Hamilton of Cranberry Township, Venango County, was invited to his first Native American ceremonial event. He was hooked from the start. “I became a big part of (the culture),” Hamilton said. Hamilton, who went on to join the Children of the Earth group, helped organize the fifth annual Honoring Mother Earth Pow Wow. The event began Friday and continues today and Sunday at the Mercer County Gr

  18. I am like @Eagle1993, I am hearing rumors from the west, and I do not want to believe what I heard. Between lack of sleep and sticker shock, I may have posted too fast. Price I am hearing is $75+ per member. That does not include any insurance or council fees. If this happens, I see a significant drop in membership in my area. I am in a rural county with a median income of $42K. I will probably quit, or register solely as a MB counselor.
