  1. For Citizenship in the Nation Community (ed -RS), how do your Scouts normally complete 4b? Scouts are to pick an important issue and interview one person from the branch of government that is responsible for the issue. Then, the Scouts should ask what is being done and how young people can help. We used to have a parent who would get the former County Treasurer to stop by our meetings. As long as the Scouts could come up with a question related to money, they were all set! Now, I'm looking for new ideas. Is it hard to get a government official to talk with a Scout?
  2. Wondering about something - we are in the middle of recharter and the only leader/parent who has stepped forward to be unit leader is not from USA. Not a dual citizen either but they do have all the paperwork to work here though. if they hold a green card can they be a unit leader? Isn’t that something that would have popped up in the background check in the past couple of years? Parent has been a den leader and passed all the background stuff from BSA but - it’s come to light to the committee they den doesn’t say the pledge, oath & law at meetings (some parents have mentio
  3. To start, from what I read of the requirements, it's almost entirely based on "diversity" and "equality." Now, while I agree that no one should say offensive terms, such as racial slurs, body shaming, poking fun at disabled people, etc., I don't think we need a merit badge on it. This sort of thing is already covered by the scout law with things such as Kind, Courteous, Reverent, Friendly, and Clean. The ENTIRE POINT of Scouting is to promote good citizenship! The three original Citizenship merit badges also account for every other aspect of the "Citizenship in Society" merit badge.
  4. Hi All. This question is not about the merit badge itself, it's about total number of merit badges needed for each rank. We use Troopmaster software, so here's where there's a little confusion on my part, and I can't quite seem to find the info I need. My 'Scouts BSA Requirements' book is from 2020, so I should probably splurge on the new edition. Anyway, for Star, a scout needs six MB's total, with four of those being Eagle required. For Life, a scout needs an additional 5 MB's, with three of those being Eagle required. Both ranks combined - 11 MB's, 7 of them Eagle. I have
  5. Completed 2 Eagle Boards last night. The advancement chair was updating Scoutbook, 1 went fine, the other advised they needed Cit in the Society. Checked some other Scouts and it is showing now as required The date is supposed to be 6/1 or 7/1
  6. Has anyone actually led Scouts through this merit badge? What worked, what didn't, and what suggestions do you have? It's Eagle required in the second half of the year, so we need to figure out how to do it.
  7. Just back from Summer Camp. Had a great discussion with a Scouter well-plugged into his council. He was asked by the SE to participate in a "soft release" of Citizenship in Society Merit Badge. SE gave no information other than that... Anyone out there have more intel??
  8. My apologies if I extend a worn out discussion .. that if BSA is especially at fault ... my asserting this is more a society issue than BSA. I was on a long drive yesterday. And, I'm a news junkie. I was listening to this on the radio. HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU READ THIS. ... I was hugely surprised at the extent / numbers. https://www.mprnews.org/story/2017/05/08/sex-assaults-in-high-school-sports-minimized-as-hazing Associated press news search found 17,000 cases in recent four year period Modern laws. Modern society understanding of abuse. Mislabeling /
  9. This specific piece seems to almost offer a challenge to the larger society to follow certain well established guidelines seen in BSA's basic tenets. Do we, or can we, as an organization respond today to this challenge, as once we did. Are we going to allow the misguided directions of much of our larger society to cancel our important contributions? Can we take the indirect challenge the author seems, to me, to be making? Take a look. You might expand to other elements of the site from which this comes, as it appears to have some really important discussions offered. https://w
  10. I wonder if we may seriously want to consider adding or modifying requirements for Citizenship in the Nation to include actually pass the Citizenship Test for those trying to become citizens; pass at or above the same standard an immigrant needs? Review this: as leaders and mentors in general, we should have concerns. Just the way I see it. https://woodrow.org/news/national-survey-finds-just-1-in-3-americans-would-pass-citizenship-test/?fbclid=IwAR0xsWFiD5opdYNBsi8mVkJTc_hogDjCVQFZhBMCs1Zr-XI_MeiqBvFKLOQ
  11. Is it really? Or is it about scout leaders who observe a victimization rate of 0.07% and look anywhere else besides BSA ... that rate is 100 fold? Could it be that BSA believes that if it is liquidated -- followed by the targeting of every organization that hosts youth, and school districts, and even the institution of family itself -- that the next five decades will be one of even greater sexual predation on our youth?
  12. His 2009 dissertation: (free ) . Very interesting read on James West, James Beard (zingers), patrol method, the Interracial Service, BSA early history, immigrants, minorities, urban vs rural, conservation/animal rights vs pioneering/scoutcraft...Good stuff. https://escholarship.org/content/qt6s56c7cg/qt6s56c7cg_noSplash_adb0c60e663dce67efa6513d5571baa4.pdf Subsequent book (2016?): Modern Manhood and the Boy Scouts of America In this illuminating look at gender and Scouting in the United States, Benjamin René Jordan examines how in its founding and early rise, the Boy Scouts of A

  14. Hi fellow Scouting friends.... I'm hoping this network of Scout folks can help me with an issue. I'm looking for a youth program that promotes patriotism, heritage, & citizenship. The former Youth Patriotism Awards program was perfect for this and covered all of the kids I'm working with (not just scouts)........... but that program had to close unfortunately ( http://www.youthpatriotism.org/index.html ) Many moons ago we did the United States Heritage Award through Nations Trails ... but I've seen negative reports about them. Has anyone done the program in the last year o
  15. This last week at the National Scout Jamboree, the National Venturing Committee fielded two events for the Venturers in Foxtrot Base Camp: a Venturing Town Hall Meeting and Region Venturing Break-Out Meetings. The first of the two was in two parts, an advisors-only session and a youth only-session. I was only able to attend the first one, and here were the major points from it: There is talks of creating an honor society exclusively for Venturing. This idea was thrown out by one of the National committee guys, Kenneth King. In short, this program required applicants to take a pledge of s
  16. At my website, I have some information for scouts working on Citizenship in the Nation: http://w0is.com/scouting/CitizNation.html I have explanations of my expectations for the requirements, and also some resources for working on it. I have information on local sites that can be used for requirement 2 (historic sites). Obviously, most of those are only relevant in my area. I'll probably tweak this after I've counseled the merit badge a few times, but if anyone finds it useful, feel free to make use of it. And, of course, constructive criticism is always welcome.
  17. Another example of one person who made a difference - North Dakotan, Silver Buffalo awardee* Herman Stern who saved over 120 Jews from the Holocaust. There's a new 32 minute documentary "The Mission of Herman Stern," the website below has a trailer. https://www.themissionofhermanstern.org/ http://www.inforum.com/entertainment/movies/4358612-man-mission-how-herman-stern-saved-more-120-jews-holocaust https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman_Stern *Herman Stern started Boy Scout Councils in Fargo, Valley City, Wahpeton, Grand Forks which later merged into the current Northern
  18. I taught ILST last week, and one thing that came up was how Sergio the merit badge fair was. Some say in class for six hours to earn a citizenship badge. I love social studies. I was history major in college, so I signed up as merit badge counselor for the three citizenship badges, and I want to organize some activities that he's ours will enjoy. I want to share my ideas here, and j hope you will share your ideas, too. Hike up and down the historic district in the neighboring town Attend the cinco de mayo festival downtown.
  19. http://lancasteronline.com/news/local/freethought-society-challenges-octorara-on-boy-scout-policy/article_43af23dc-e1ea-11e4-b04a-7b40cf8159d8.html And the prize for completely missing the point goes to: Charlie Rogers, scout executive with the Chester County Council of Boy Scouts of America, said no parents or Scouts from Octorara or other area troops have made discrimination complaints to the council. “Our programs are open to all kids regardless of sexual orientation,†he said.
  20. Found this piece in the Los Angeles Times to be interesting and bit humorous. I particularly liked the ending comments; " giving this new version of PC the respect it deserves warrants a whole new term. So what have we got? Insatiable aggrievedness? Compulsive didacticism? Sanctimonious kneejerkery? Any of those would beat political correctness. Because PC's been beat." http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed...03-column.html
  21. One of the requirements for the Citizenship in the Community merit badge is to watch a movie that depicts an individual or group having a positive effect on a community. I have some ideas, and the scouts have submitted some ideas to me, but would like to hear suggestions from the Forum, so I get a nice cross section to choose from.... I'm all ears, er... eyes.... :-)
  22. Deep down I know we are all in this whole Scouting thing for the youth. However, as we have seen, politics and religion tend to divide us. So with that, I ask you this: Is there any reason why we, as Scouters, couldn't be active in, say, the BSA and the BPSA? Or GSUSA and AHG? Discuss.
  23. Its almost as if you are not a natural leader, you get kicked to the curb with nothing in life to look forward to but to be a follower. I know I have missed something and would like to know what I missed Now, why would someone assume people who are not natural leaders are kicked to the curb? I think the answer is that we're conditioned to think that way these days, but it's bad conditioning we should shake off. It's that sort of thinking (a hallmark of the Cult of Leadership) that drives people to all sorts of dysfunctional behavior in many areas of our society. It caused lots of hav
  24. Your are an elected representative with an upcoming budget session which is the same time that your son is going off on a "scout hike". Seems obvious, but here's a poll. http://www.citizen-times.com/story/e...sion/10857185/
