  1. I have used some small needle nose pliers to "adjust" the angle of the fiction area... use small tweaks to work the backside of the buckle. Sometimes you can squeeze the edges in a bit.
  2. And my own son, who is not allowed to attend them, is feeling a bit left out while he watches his friends from other troops "earning" badges at those events. Attendance is NOT a measure of participation or a measure of individual effort as far as Merit Badges go. Instead of imposing your own view or bias (not saying you are mistaken) why not let him see for himself? After all, if you would like to see a Scout experience aspects of Leadership and Citizenship, shouldn't you give him credit for being able to tell a road apple from a rose? (This message has been e
  3. A little off-topic.... I know the Crew that my Life Scout son goes to is managed more by the girls (including his twin sister) in the crew than the boys. Are the Scouts burned out from providing leadership/direction to the Troop, maybe... probably. The Crew advisor does a good job putting it on the Crew to plan/execute activities..... I wish the Scout Master of the Troop would put more in the hands of the Troop PLC (too Type-A to let the PLC fail). Doesn't seem to follow thru with the SPL/PL in the patrol meetings. Sometimes they do what they planned, sometimes they get ov
  4. You CAN provide opportunity/training... You CAN implement the opportunity plan/training... You CAN present the need for training (and get youth/parents/COR informed) and advocate dropping untrained members from the unit .... these items are a plan which tasks your leadership. "getting 3 adults trained is on my Woodbadge ticket" Is not something you can MAKE happen, and is likely to be a poorly managed ticket item (if that's the wording on the ticket).. In the new Crew my youth-son serves on, all adult positions agree to get/be trained before the recharter (or they we
  5. Rules without consequences... Scout Meetings are all about consequences, just not penalties.... Example: Complete uniform = chocolate treat, incomplete uniform or not uniform earns hard candy (i.e. Most like chocolate better). #1 Adult leaders = Uniformed (hard to play the game if you don't know who is playing). I always leveraged youth that are Uniformed for Ceremonies, greeters, Lead Scouts for Games, Snacks, etc., but treat all Scouts respectfully. The preference to pick a uniformed Scout for fun tasks or "in-front" opportunities is not lost on everyone. That was the only co
  6. SeattlePioneer, Why would a business want to give customers a discount if they were already planning to go into Red Robin...the idea is to get people to come to Red Robin who were not planning on coming in. hence the fundraiser pitch. The ones I know about will not let you hand out fliers out front. I don't really care for this kinda fundraiser personally, but I see a year-long Talley for non-profits (sales) at the local BBQ joint. I think they pay off a % at the end of the year.
  7. They can handle/shoot pistols, after a training course. They can serve youth up to 21 instead of 18. Boys who earned 1st class in the Troop can earn other BSA advancements up to Eagle (by 18) thru the Crew. They can attend the Jamboree as participants instead of staff or visitors (up to 21).
  8. chaoman45, Completing 1 ticket item in 2 months right after Wood Badge was probably in the works before the course, or "light" on responsibility.
  9. Tampa, I was just a gonna suggest a hand-crank bike. In fact, I always use one (amputee ASM, Cycling MBC). See if there is a local hand-cycling community (University or cycling club that knows someone willing to loan out one.). Might get some Disability (although temporary) Awareness perspective in if you can find a hand-cycler in the area.
  10. Here is our local Springfield, Ohio event. Join an historical occasion at Freedom Grove Park in Urbana, corner of U.S Route 68 and State Route 55, where a steel beam from the World Trade Center is being mounted and flanked by a pair of large stars for dedication as a monument. Boy Scouts are being asked to line the walkway and semicircle around the permanent display prior to the ceremony. Organizers have ordered 500 American flags so each Scout can hold one as visitors walk in. Scouts will need to be in uniform and will need to arrive between 12:45-1 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 1
  11. I appear to be like most Scouters... Neckers depend on if the Troop is wearing them during travel, or it's a casual Troop event or I'm on Council time. I usually always have my beads. I like to wear my Wood Badge beads with my Troop Necker.. I've got several slides (several hand made, some old BSA, and the Wood Badge Leather woggle - my favorite is a black paracord woggle with a small Buffalo pin I found). I wear my Wood Badge Service necker with leather woggle and 3 Beads during Wood badge staff week 1. We go to the Taupe necker, 3 Beads and leather woggle during staff week 2.
  12. You guys can put your council info in the oft unused Profile. I know I have the public profile info in mine but it's not showing up... or being saved .(This message has been edited by dg98adams)(This message has been edited by dg98adams)
  13. According to the "Training Times August 2011" I just got from my Council Training Chair. There is a new syllabus out for "Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)" It was a replacement for "Troop Leadership Training". I replied to my training chair... does he have access to this new syllabus? Anyone, Anyone, Bueller, Bueller?
  14. My 1st reaction to your list.... It's a good idea to prepare, but not bring all to be all to everyone. Things I would generally leave to the 1st Aid staff a. Ginger ale (stomach aches)
  15. The troop I server has a Chevy extended van with 4 rows of seats? Anyway, with the van and ~2 vehicles (1 truck to pull the Troop trailer) we usually have seats for the active Scouts on outings, ~20-25. The Troop covered the purchase price (used) and the church covers the insurance yearly. Labor is the Troop leaders, and we fund-raise for big-repairs/parts. I would say we use the van at least once a month and any big trips (1-2 a year).
  16. I agree with shortridge. but I would hold fast on being present, period, no if's or buts. If I can't be present (or the parent), then it's gonna get legal and an outside professional is getting involved.
  17. Ummm, you should be lucky to always be heavy ASM's. The real question is whether the Scout was comfortable to talk to the BOR with ASM's he knows. When they are new Scouts it's hard enough to get them to talk at all. If the SM completed the SMOC he should be able ready for the BOR. Besides there's not much to ask a Tenderfoot in a BOR. Did he complete the BOR sucessfully?
  18. When I was a DL/CM I was won over to "assembly line food prep" for Cubs on a Pack outing. Making walking tacos in a corn chip bag, assembly line GORP for short hike food, Distractions are too strong to keep Cubs "turning foil packets" or turning dutch ovens while baking (curiosity to lift the lid and look - is too high). Save the detailed cooking for Webelos Den Camping... but don't get too deep into complicated cooking skills. Dutch Oven Pizzas, Box-Oven cookies, Egg-in-an-orange-peel, pan cakes, monkey bread, biscuit on a stick, tripod hanging a chicken on a string over
  19. ssovnivek There are many opportunities in Tecumseh Council other than summer camp for swim skills. If the issue is pool access for personal skill instruction at no fee send me a private email and I will help setup opportunities with a SM/swimming MBC who works out of the Fairborn Y or myself (also a Y member swimming/lifesaving MBC, BSA Lifeguard, ARC Lifeguard - Greater Dayton Y). I can also get access to the base pools, as a AF retiree. If the Scout can do the beginners test, then with minimal skill instruction I am confident the BSA swimmers test can be achieved. I have sh
  20. "The Scoutmaster teaches boys to play the game by doing so himself. Sir Robert Baden-Powell Wear the full uniform, get creative and make unusual necker slides. Encourage uniform as a selection method for ceremonies, etc. "Show me a poorly uniformed troop and I'll show you a poorly uniformed leader. Sir Robert Baden-Powell
  21. My Life-Scout son is a Trumpet player and pretty good. All good musicians are instrument snobs, but his taste is reasonable for HS band/concert. I bought him a nice bugle... and he plays it for the Troop and my council stuff on occasion. He has a stirring Taps (hair on the back of your neck raising) , and does pretty well with the rest of the bugle calls just sight reading as he plays. He took it to staff camp, so maybe he will play it there (I dropped a hint to the Program Director in case he doesn't speak up). http://scoutbugle.com/Centennial.htm (This message has
  22. BadenP, Care to share your syllabi for your WDL training? I have been covering it for the council the last couple years, and the one I use could use some help. DG(This message has been edited by dg98adams)
  23. Not defending the Troop, but Boy Scouting is very different than Cub Scouting. If it's done right, it won't look polished and organized, and 1 meeting is not a snap shot of the Troop. If a Troop goes to the same spots for camping it might be the PLC,(which is made up of the Patrol Leaders) feel comfortable planning that outing. It's up to the Scouts to plan for a variety of events/locations.... It might also be a non-existent PLC has a Scout Master that plans the same outing over and over. Most Troops need several months of planning/skill-development before Scouts go on a H
  24. That's a good idea ....but don't want to fix too much in stone. when I was CM I like d to give new parents (when I got the completed application not before) a current newsletter (for next month), and the plan we have for the year with dates for popcorn sale, Pack meeting dates/time, special event dates like PW derby, Day Camp, Camp Weekends, Memorial Day Parade, AOL evening, Blue and Gold, planning picnic... This would be a list of dates/location rather than a complete calendar. I remember 2-3 pages with Scout Office/store location address, my leadership name/address/email/phone,
