  1. I know atleast I would show up either way. It’s only the eagle mill troops that wouldn’t should up.
  2. Exactly. If BSA just handed out merit badges it would make them look like they think special needs kids are “dumb and can’t do anything.” I standby by BSA when it comes providing different requirements or more help for a merit badge, but just handing it out isn’t the right thing.
  3. So the family is sueing the Boy Scouts that will cost them thousands, and will take away from making the program better? The only reason this is a issue because their local council probably didn’t want to deal with all the paperwork and didn’t believe in what National has set place and made their own rules. I wonder if the MBCs were only his parents and/or Troop parents. I feel badly for the parents, it’s not their fault, they did everything they could to ensure it would be done correctly (and assumed it was). It’s the councils fault that should be taking the blame. I can
  4. My mom was a GS leader for years and hosted many camporees for the district. I went once when I was around 9 and it was beautiful. The dining hall, the cabins, all updated. It had low COPE as well, I might’ve had high COPE. It was pretty big.
  5. I am a youth, sophomore, and one merit badge away from Eagle. Give them a leadership role, make them feel welcomed. We put senior scouts as guide, or usually they are elected for SPL. Senior scouts will feel needed if you give them a topic to teach. Knots instructor, first aid, etc
  6. Agreed, I would expect a MBC to be a professional swimmer, life guard, aquatic supervisor, etc.
  7. General Supervision Requirements Swimming and watercraft activities must be conducted in accordance with BSA Safe Swim Defense or BSA Safety Afloat, respectively, and be supervised by mature and conscientious adults at least 21 years old and trained in the program applicable. Counselors for merit badges involving swimming or the use of watercraft must be so trained, or use others who are. All I could find online, I would contact council or your districts merit badge dean.
  8. I plan on doing the cycling merit badge with my mom, but I don’t want people to think that “she just signed off and they did nothing”. I’m not that type of person, neither is my mom. I was thinking to track all my miles on my phone (A GPS biking app would lay out the routes we took & miles) and I would show my SM and CC to verify I didn’t do anything. Do you feel like it is needed to show my SM to verify? I know my SM and CC would believe me, but there are some parents/leaders that wouldn’t.
  9. Oops! Guess studying for child development and looking at requirements at the same time isn’t good
  10. I'm finally starting personal fitness, meeting with my counselor tonight. But going over the requirements once more a few days ago since I forgot since the last time I looked at it. I'm so glad I did not wait any longer to start it, I did not recall seeing 12 month period of exercise for improvement. What do you think about it taking a year to complete one merit badge?
  11. I still suggest Remind for a communication system. Many many schools use it.
  12. I think most CORs are non existent... My district usually gives out 5-6 awards yearly, some for youth and some for leaders. I was somehow was awarded scout of the year last year. There are tons of awards, and I’m sure your district or council can help more.
  13. That’s why I use Trello, (You should look it up) it’s only for leaders and Troop if they want. And it’s completely free! We have a little blurb on our COs website (that I made for them).
  14. I’ve looked at other troop websites too before noticing how out dated it is. No one uses scoutlander anymore (I don’t know if anyone ever did), and there’s really no need for a website that can cost over $150 a year.
  15. I use something for youth leaders (I am currently SPL, my 2nd term AND FINAL ends in May) called Trello. It’s like a organizational private board where everything is posted. The meeting plans, PLC minutes & agendas, calendar, themes, contact list, and a whole bunch of resources. Works fine for us. We don’t use anything besides what’s required by BSA for management. We use remind for messaging, google docs for attendance.
  16. I don’t think many people would think “let’s try to find a Boy Scout Troop website”, let’s admit it, not many troops have websites. I feel like many troops don’t utilize this position because it is not needed.
  17. I would just find a new one and explain your situation to them. If you did what the requirement said, a MBC can not add or remove requirements.
  18. If they don’t feel comfortable saying it I would just skip the “As an American...”
  19. I’m a youth still, and I’m sure you all know that we know how to use technology well. I would just instruct the webmaster what he has to keep updated, and whatever else a webmaster does. It’s not really needed to use district resources to train one of the least important and easiest job.
  20. “The sailboat kit consists of a seven-inch (178 mm) long balsa wood hull, a 6-1/2 inch mast, plastic sail, plastic rudder, and metal keel.” source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raingutter_regatta
  21. I see where scouting can be expensive. Summer camp, camporee, etc. especially in low income communities.
  22. Your pack should use the model that sporting good stores sell, your council shop, etc. http://www.scoutstuff.org/regatta-trimaran-kit.html#.WqRHVejwbIU I assume that BSA would design something that they made to fit into a inflatable track that they made.
  23. I can pass it now. I was a beginner during my first summer camp, around 4 years ago? I just haven’t been to camp for the past year due to me working at a day camp.
  24. Don’t stress about it. I didn’t pass my first time (I’m still a youth), it’s no big deal. Beginner swimmers can do everything but go in the deep end or water activities. I didn’t even take it two years ago just because I didn’t feel like it and I knew I wasn’t going to be swimming.
