  1. We give the necker, the patch and medal, parent pins and the framed signed certificate. Eagles give Mentor pins. Troop has a plaque of our Eagles (now over 120). The COH is planned by the Scout so those vary.
  2. Bear protocol BIG TIME!! Check with the rangers regarding the trails. They'll need to learn to hang bear bags in a non Philmont environment.
  3. We have always taken two days or more. The first few days we stay outside camp. Then we move in to Philmont the day before departure. Gets us acclimated.
  4. Where in Surbaugh's private no-share video did you see him offer CO's a choice? I saw family and girls mentioned. Nothing about CO's having a choice.
  5. Right. Everyone has their BSA decoder rings. We know what "scouting accessible for families" means.
  6. Because it won't stop at just girls in Scouting. It will be the INTEGRATION of girls in Scouting. Pure Coed, not sperate but equal. And the integration of girls will put more guys off Scouting than girls it will attract.
  7. Didn't see the hate after Reagan won, or Bush, or Clinton. After Bush 2 won the vitriol started and escalated.
  8. ^^^^^^ I found my last Scoutmaster's Minute! This should be a sticky.
  9. You miss the point. Put "leadership" in key places on various web pages and in meta data headers and you're on the first page, top spot.
  10. So are they giving to BSA now that the barriers are gone?
  11. @@Stosh the google ranking algorithm is an easy one to manipulate. Make me BSA CIO and I'll have them #1 in two months and stay there. On second thought, don't make me their CIO...I'd have to take a pay cut. Not worth it.
  12. ROFL. So if Trump wanted to make a policy change and 1) created a secret video that was only shared with who he wants, and 2) surveyed only those people who he wanted, and 3) wrote the survey in such a way that it lead the user to the desired outcome, and 4) pressured anyone who leaked the video or survey to take down the links, you'd be perfectly okay with it? Where's my BS flag? Yes debate is still going on. But you entirely miss the point. BSA is trying to orchestrate the outcome, manufacturer "support" by limiting the scope of the debate and leading those who do respond to their outcom
  13. Then if my council was this draconian and held such events we'd make sure only council cronies were in attendance.
  14. Maybe councils should duck and cover. FOS is their major funding source. Tick off troops at your own risk.
  15. And yet Scouts go to Home Depot or Loews or other companies all the time for funding and in kind contributions. One scout went to Kroger for his food drive, who also happens to be a big sponsor of our camp cards. I think what ticks off council is that fundraising has gotten harder for them. Instead of coming up with creative new ways, they forbid Eagles from raising money. I ask you which is more worthy?
  16. Well you can do yourself good. Surbaugh and his group are essentially going wee down our backs and telling us it's raining. At some point folks are going to say, "Enough! I'm out!" Being lied to by national over and over has been enough to cause some great folks to leave. Can't say that I won't be among them. But I'm close.
  17. Try showing up to football practice in your street clothes. No player would even think of it. Why should Scouting set the bar lower than any other activity?
  18. Can you recall a time where national was this secretive or manipulative in trying to appear like they are truly interested in open discussion, but shutting down debate and the inflow of an opposing view? I can't.
  19. @@qwazse, I read his post the same way @@Gwaihir did. I have to say I watched the video as well, took the survey (read others) and came to the same conclusion. I would also admit to being a bit more than dismayed that some one in an official (or semi-official) capacity would contact the moderators on this board requesting them to remove a link to the video and/or survey. I would also admit to being fed up with some of the tactics being used by Scout executives; national, council or district. I see no reason not to simply put the video out there along with the survey and ask people to d
  20. Disagree with the highlighted section, Fred. We had a similar case with First Aid, where it was 8 hours of Powerpoint and no hands on work and the full badge awarded. As a unit we did the following: Contacted the MB College to register our complaint. Followed the GTA and reported the issue to district and council. Contacted the Scouts affected and their parents to have a meeting. We told them they did nothing wrong (except the one Scout who attested to having done a pre-req he could not possibly have done), we reviewed the GTA and their rights outlined in that doc. We offered a solutio
  21. Can't tell. Are you mocking BP for stepping down and holding to his principles?
  22. As a shooting sports instructor I have always believe this example of the SM's role. We never grab the gun (unless it's a safety issue). We instruct on form, technique and process. They miss the target and we advised them based on observations how to correct their mistake. They hit a few, miss a few. We readjust, provide more commentary and advice and they try again. My biggest issue with leadership within the unit is not with the youth, it's with the adults. We hold TLT every year. We have special classes on program planning and event planning. But the parents think that "once taught, for
  23. How is using crowd funding any different from asking people for money via email? If the council is going to contradict national then do this: Have the PARENT create the funding site and ask on behalf of his Scout for the money. Then the parent passes the money through to the Scout as a gift. If councils are going to go rogue they have to expect people are going to find ways around their silly "rule".
  24. Well if BSA is going to swell the ranks with all the under-served communities they either need to drop the price of BSA gear altogether, OR allow units to pick their uniforms. How many other youth activities allow kids to show up out of uniform or unprepared? Only Boy Scouts.
