Who does BSA allow to camp with Boy Scouts?
OldGreyEagle replied to Buffalo Skipper's topic in Camping & High Adventure
I think you would be hard pressed to keep parents/guardians away from a campout. You also have to be sure the attending parents/guardians know what the progrma is about and they need to allow the program to unfold. SOmetimes the food gets burnt, you have to clean the dishes, etc. But it is great to have parents who are invovled in their kids life, ain't it? -
Seeing as how steak tartare is raw beef, I would think it would be a natural on campouts :/

HealtchCare Round II, Anybody Interested?
OldGreyEagle replied to OldGreyEagle's topic in Issues & Politics
being in Healthcare I agree that if only people who could afford healthcare would receive healthcare then the prices would come down. Of course, then we also have to be able to step over the bodies of the dead and dying when we go to the hospital and learn to bypass remnants of unattended deliveries in the home As a society we have to choose how we value human life and whenever cultural diffrences are talked about between US and THEM, one of the points brought up is "They don't value human life the same way we do". If we adopt only those who can pay get healthcare, there goes that difference. Perhaps we are on the road to a compromise as we speak.... about who gets healthcare The issue is, there are some who know that if healthcare is a right, then they don't have to pay for it and the local Emergency dept becomes the Clinic when its not serving as the Knife and Gun Club meeting place. I wish I had answers, I know the way it is now, it needs changing. I also know that the changes I have read will do nothing to improve the quality of Medicine -
Tax Supported Entities - Who/ What are they?
OldGreyEagle replied to Scoutfish's topic in Issues & Politics
You Cannot be Serious John McEnroe -
My understanding is Merlyn could care less if BSA survives or not, he just wants the BSA not to receive benefits from any tax supported entity

Could you get your "friend" to talk to the Unit Commisoner, if one exists? Having the drawing is against BSA rules, now, how much intestinal fortitude does your friend have? How do you see this going if your "friend" is sucessful in changing unit tradition, what is the downside, what do you, err, you "friend" hope to accomplish? Are you willing to jump in and spend as much time as any other volunteer if you upset, I mean your friend, is he/she willing to do what it takes to make the Troop 100% BSA compliant?
-
OK, the president has said the time for talk is over, its time to pass the Health Care Reform Bill. Does anybody know what is in it? Last time, in the fall, there were links to the full text of the then proposed legislation and I don't seem to find that now. Last time various provisions were talked about openly and now the only thing I know for sure is some legislators don't like the language that is used in the Abortion provision and even then I am not sure if its pro or anti abortion. What do we know for sure about the current bill? All that I thought I knew about the old bill is toast, what changes are in store for us? Will there be the widespread outrage that was present last time? What is known for sure, and I don't mean political posturing

From the Guide to Safe Scouting: The Boy Scouts of America prohibits the use of alcoholic beverages and controlled substances at encampments or activities on property owned and/or operated by the Boy Scouts of America, or at any activity involving participation of youth members. Its in bold here as its in bold in the Guide to Safe Scouting Now, I understand you are talking about cooking use only. I am not saying don't do it, I am saying know what the rules are and how you would defend yourself if your use of alcohol was ever questioned.

This is requirement 9A from the Camping merit badge 9 a. Camp a total of at least 20 days and 20 nights. Sleep each night under the sky or in a tent you have pitched. The 20 days and 20 nights must be at a designated Scouting activity or event. You may use a week of long-term camp toward this requirement. If the camp provides a tent that has already been pitched, you need not pitch your own tent. I would use this as a definition of "camping", I am sure there are many others

So, back in the 60's when the first James Bond Movies came out there was a rumor that the Vatican had it's own secret agent, Et Cum Spiree 2 2 0 Then again there was the story of the priest ( again in the 60's) who took in a long imprisoned mafioso. After the Sunday collection the priest notices wallets, rings, and earrings in the collection he takes the old boy aside and says, "you know, its my fault, the words are Dominus Vobis cum, not Dominic go frisk 'em" never failed to get a laugh in the Seminarian library

Serious Scout Discipline Advice Needed
OldGreyEagle replied to ProudMom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
When you say "pot" do you mean marijuana? As far as I know, selling marijuana is a crime. Now, in Florida, there may be a threshold weight at which selling marijuana is a misdemeanor and above a certain weight is a felony. Then you have to factor in what your responsibilites are. If you are aware a crime took place and do not report it, what are your state statues on that? Is there a difference if its a misdemeanor or a felony? If you have knowledge of a crime and do not report it, it may not effect you. What about others on the COmmittee? Any lawyers? Police Officers? others who are legally required to report unlawful activity? I am not advocating you lead a torchlight parade to the alleged perpertrators home, but at the same time what does not addressing the situation immediately accomplish? -
Unauthorized and Restricted Activities
OldGreyEagle replied to MNBob's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Well, the adults who are registered leaders agreed to follow the rules and regulations of the BSA when they signed their applications, so its the registered troop leadership who is supposed to be up on these things. The punishment? Thats a lot more obscure and ethereal. It's not like you are supposed to self-report yourself to Council or your DE and get 1 demerit. There isn't much "punishment" meted out to units, the BSA wants units, it doesnt want to be in the business of revoking charters for the most part. Now you know that Laser Tag is prohibited, bring it to the unit leadership's attention and don't do it any more. If another Laser Tag outing is done, then you have to consider what your next move it. Luckily enough, its not like the BSA program Police (cousin to the Uniform Police) will be busting down the doors during a unit meeting to grab your charter and abscond with it into the night. -

Did the scouts put on the laser "vests" and actively shot at each other or was a Laser Tag "option" present but no scout participated in the laser tag section? -
Helicopter Parents and Advancement
OldGreyEagle replied to Buffalo Skipper's topic in Advancement Resources
I think you guys are being a little harsh, my first instinct would to be to inquire about the lad's health since there must be some malady present that precludes the youth's ability to communicate. -
One of the best reasons for the uniform was something I heard Tico Perez say, and its not just because Tico said it. The uniform is your scouting resume, you don't wear anything on it that you haven't earned. The youth's rank, the adults knot, all tell you something about the person. The position patch tells you what they do, the Wood Badge beads, the Den Chief shoulder code, the temporary patch, the prescence of a National Jamboree patch, all tell a story about the person. If they are wearing an OA Lodge flap, what color tabs they have on. They all are an encapsulazation of the person. That you have to earn what you wear is singular in American Culture, you can't just pimp out a uniform because you want (I know several do, thats another discussion, I am talking pure "the way its supposed to be" here)

My first thought was I sure hope we don't have thousands of prospective new scouts show up at troop meetings wanting to get in on "hawk tossing" or join and ind out that tossing tomahawks are not standanrd fare at every outing Overall though, it was good, it was better than a stick in the eye

<I thought it was> TROLL TIDE!

I can see where this is going, but heck, what a ride I am not so sure Dale "Came out" as much as he was "outed" in a photo in a Newspaper covering a Gay Rights Rally in New Jersey. Had that photo never been run, I wonder where we would be today.

I am not sure I was ever sworn to neutrality, if thats what you heard, you heard wrong Did you hear Lord Baden Powell say he wanted young men and women to be scoutmasters? We could plow fertile ground over the advantage of having a "young" scoutmaster as in 21-35? Of course it depends on how old you are as to what constitutes young. Most Scoutmasters seem to be in the 40-above range and I dont think that's what Lord Baden Powel was after. Younger people with less concern of their mortality may be whats needed as the older geezers slow down. I wonder if there are records about what the average age of scoutmasters were in the 1920's, 1930's etc to see if its changed over the years and if some of the image problems scouting has is the aging of its volunteers.

Has anyone seen a good new campfire skit?
OldGreyEagle replied to NE-IV-88-Beaver's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Most of skits are quite long, this one is much shorter and never fails to get a hoot Scout A: I am so glad to be out of the house, all my parents think about is scouting, my dad wants to serve tin foil dinners at my graduation party! Scout B: You think thats bad? My parents looted my college fund to buy Coleman stock when they got a tip they were coming out with a propane powered microwave camp stove. Scout C: Yeah, well my mom says my dads favorite cologne is Deep Woods Off Scout A: When my dad redid the downstairs bathroom, the plans called for digging a deeper hole. Scout B: MY Dad was arrested at the airport, he wouldnt let go of his pocketknife until the TSA agent said thank you Scout C: Last winter when we lost power for a day my parents started using the 3 pot method for washing dishes, and We are STILL using it! (Scout D and Scout E walk onto stage) Scout D: Hey, what are you guys doing?, Scout C: Oh, we are just talking about how nuts our parents are over scouting, Arent you the twin brothers who just joined the troop? Scout E: Yes, just joined and our family is unquestionably the most nuts over scouting, bar none! Scout B: Oh yeah? What makes you so sure? Scout E: You want to handle that one ... Baden? Scout D; No, you take it ... Powell. -
Let's be sure we don't confuse BadenP the poster with B-P The Founder on this website there are recrodings of B-P, The Founder http://www.thescoutingpages.org.uk/speeches.html Listen to the first one, titled "BP Gives a Talks to Scouts". Almost at the very end he asks for "young men, and even young women to come forth to be scoutmasters" Apparently he was more enlightened than some of us today

Well, you are correct, this isn't the way to run a Crew. A Crew is supposed to have it's own calendar and own activities that the youth plan. Having them tag along with Troop activities undermines one of the basic tenents of Venturing, but you asked what could be done, or I think you did. Anyway. While Advancement is not a Method of Venturing, it certainly can be a part of a Crews Program. In any of the recognitions that a Venturer can earn, whether its a Bronze in any interest area, a Ranger, Trust, Quest or well we will leave Sea Scouts out of this discussion, the youth has to do a presentation to a group of individuals. If the Venturign youth are going to be hanging out at the meeting, incorporate them into doing instruction. If they are going on a Troop Campout, have them do a cooking demonstration, such as how to cook without utensils, how to do Land navigation, etc. You could look at it as having a large untapped resource to use. What you desribe is not how Venturing is suppsoed to be done, thank you for realizing that up front
