Williams' Compensation revisited - Nice deal
OldGreyEagle replied to jkhny's topic in Issues & Politics
I dont know if this is true or not, so I ask if anyone who knows to please speak up. I once heard that Mr WIlliams has bodyguards around him 24 hours a day because of what has been deem "legitimate death threats" because of the BSA stance on issues. Can anyone confirm or deny that? -
I give you a White Star on your story. In the past few years I have seen the BSA, at least in my Council, really get in heavy with the Scoutreach Program and Learning for Life. Then there is the Venturing Program introduced to attract older non-scouting youth and as a method to hold onto older scouts and recently there is the Scouting/Soccer program and yet you want to focus on the fact the BSA has no new ideas or ignores reality. Lets see, one program to help the disadvantaged youth of the nation, an all inclusive program and one to provide a program to both boys and girls where they develop their own program and another engineered to a specific demographic that has not embraced scouting. Yet in the last how many years you don't seem to give the BSA credit for doing anything right. Most of us know why merlyn posts here, his reasons are well know. Why are you here?

Problems at other youth groups?
OldGreyEagle replied to Prairie_Scouter's topic in Issues & Politics
When I think problems of other youth groups, little league comes to mind. How many deaths a year do they have? And how come they can't figure out how to keep overage kids off their tournament teams? -
There's a calm surrender to the rush of day When the heat of the rolling world can be turned away An enchanted moment, and it sees me through It's enough for this restless warrior just to be with you And can you feel the love tonight It is where we are It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer That we got this far And can you feel the love tonight How it's laid to rest It's enough to make kings and vagabonds Believe the very best There's a time for everyone if they only learn That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn There's a rhyme and reason to the wild outdoors When the heart of this star-crossed voyager beats in time with yours

Should the BSA promote creationism?

stlscouter, the reason why the (insert favorite term here)brain is so expensive is because they havent been used. -
One of the methods of scouting is Adult Association, this is where the scout interacts with adults, not of his family and learns how to act and react around them. Many scouts have told me their college interview was a snap because of the Board of Review experience. Now, I don't see a Board of Review as a grilling of the boys personal philosophy, but I dont think any question, pertaining to scouting should be avoided. I have been in a few Boards of Review where I heard the same question asked a couple different ways. Watching the scout respond gives insight to the scout and its an oppportunity for the scout to grow. As far as offensive questions go, I would rather error on the possibility the scout will think the quesiotn slightly offensive rather than lob cream puffs up. At some point, the scout will learn not all adults are "nice" and they have to be able to deal with those people. I do expect adults to be able not to embarass the scout, but asking tough questions should not be discouraged

The optimal first year program?
OldGreyEagle replied to flyingember's topic in Open Discussion - Program
If your first year program has patrol guides and you use instructors to teach the scout skills, I dont see how you can say there is no older scout role modeling, the patrol guides, the instructors, the PLC when they take their turn as patrol leader, there are plenty of role models, at least I think so -

You know, with Swimming merit badge in the "Aerobic Group" with Cycling and Hiking, with only one of the three being required for Eagle coupled with a scouts ability to choose Lifesaving or Emergency Preparedness for Eagle its entirely possible those scouts will never have to swim again after they have passed their first class swimming requirements. The aims of scouting is not to produce the next Michael Phelps, but to develop men of charactor, citizenship and personal fitness, all of which can be done without an aquatic lifestyle. Now, I beleive a scout loses a lot if they can't swim, they can't canoe etc, but my thoughts of what an Eagle Scout can do isnt important, all that matters is the requirments are met. -
Well done emb021 and NJCubScouter Its always helps the thread if correct terms are used. Perhaps most knew GSA meant Girl Scouts, but its always nice to know the facts before you start to spew

Awhile back, attendance at the Troops PLC was weak, anemic actually. The same core of guys showed up, but not many others. The same few guys were doing all the planning and it was wearing on them. So, at a Troop meeting I did a scoutmastes minute, well actually 5 minute. I asked the Troop what did they think would happen if Congressmen and Senators did not show up for legislative sessions? If Judges did not show up for work? And they responded those people would not be doing their job. Then I reminded them the PLC meeting was nect SUnday evening and their Patrol leader was suposed to be there and to be sure to ask him about what happened at the next meeting. That PLC was the best attended, then as time went on, attendance again dropped. PLC memebrs need to be reminded of their responsibilities, but its they who are elected who are to represent the group. THe Aims of scouting are Citizenship, Charactor and personal Fitness. PLC attendance is 2 of the 3, 3 of 3 if the meeting goes over 3 hours

There is no requirement that a scout wear a uniform at a BOR. much less the rank the scout has not yet received from the Troop. There is no reason to wait till a Court of Honor to award the rank patch, we award the patch when earned, or very soon thereafter and then at the Court of Honor we give the rank card. As the date of advancement is the dates of the Board of Review, why wait to award the rank patch?

Always thought Dog Care and Pet Care were pretty close, Packsaddle, I collect brains as well, my assistant came back with my latest addition, its from Abby Normal, I'd send you a slice, but I have plans for it. Now, I could send you some tissue from a bottle labeled A. Uumellmahaye I found (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
I shall repeat my standard comment and I think its even in the the G2SS, but group hugs are ok, as long as they are done in a true platonic boy scouty 2 deep leadership sort of way

"Paper" Eagles - failures or not?
OldGreyEagle replied to CNYScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
To get on topic (who me?) if the scout Beav talks about, makes Eagle, it will be a failure of his home troops program (the scouts, not Beav's) -
A Blacksmithing Venture Crew in kilts? I guess after a day at the forge and anvil there would be nothing more refreshing than a quick bellows blow up the legs. Back when I was a Radiology Dept manager we got in some new lead protective garments, to spare weight they consisted of lead vests and then overlapping skirts attached with velcro. SOme of the male radiographers declined to wear them, I told them that on the ladies they were skirts, but on laddies they were kilts. Most wore them and made sure evryone knew they were a kilt

Of course, opinions expressed here do not necessarily reflect much more than that poster's opinion

I have also seen a "chair" that looks like two planks, one with a slot cut in it that the "sitting" portion fits in, anyone see plans for that ?

"Paper" Eagles - failures or not?
OldGreyEagle replied to CNYScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I think the BSA program is pretty well thought out, if there are "paper Eagles" its not the program, its the adults who administer it. -
The Troop showed "The Great Escape" and in discussions broke down the charactors and how they all contibuted to the team's effort even though each role was much different.

If not AP Hill, then where?
OldGreyEagle replied to SemperParatus's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I think Greeneagle has a valid point, but it may be misdirected. How much did the Jamboree cost for a scout? I mean the amount per scout that BSA charged the Council? I dont mean transportation, Troop Hats, T-Shirts, Gym bags, Water bottles, etc. Just the plain invarnished cost for the scout being at APHill. I was at the 2001 Jamboree and cost to be with the Council Contigent as aprox $1,100 while the Jamboree fee per scout was $450 or something like that, I will gladly accept correction. The extra money was for transportation, touring DC for 2 days and logding, that sort of thing. As has been mentioned, transportation will always be an issue no matter where it is, but I think its one of the biggest costs of attending.
