Remember the wisdom of Shakespeare "The first thing we do is kill all the lawyers!" And then again there is the "Merchant of Venice" I think if Billy Shakespeare was writing today, the PC Fanatics would brand his plays as "hate speach" and consider his a racist, definitely anti-semetic Sorry just a random thought, I'll stop now

"Incentives" (bribery) and enrollment fraud
OldGreyEagle replied to jkhny's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Free introductory "gifts" are a staple of American Business. Sign up this week and receive free installation, three months free,Computer Case, what-have-you. The crucial test is not the free gift, but does the product deliver, and its up to US, the volunteers, to deliver the promise (where have I heard that before)and keep them interested Often BSA, Councils and Districts are roundly slammed on this and other forums for not doing more to promote the program, and perhaps with some justification. Here we have incentive gifts being used and the idea is slammed. You cant please everyone(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
If not AP Hill, then where?
OldGreyEagle replied to SemperParatus's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I beleive what Kahuna is talking about is that despite the Save Our Scouts Legislation and President Bush's promise of support, there is no guarantee that AP HIll will be available. GW wont be president and who knows what the composition of the Senate and House will be. I would think it prudent for the BSA to have a Plan B if the AP Hill rug is pulled out from underneath us after November 2008 If you think the SOS legislation is solid, remember the connection between the 18th and 21rst amendments. -

Fred, check this link, its identical to the BSA Advancement Policies and Procedures Book. http://www.meritbadge.com/info/policy4.htm NOTE: remember the question when does advancement take place? From the same section: When a boy satisfactorily completes his board of review for a rank or an Eagle Palm, tenure for his next rank or Eagle Palm begins immediately.

IF a BOR turns down a scout based on Scout Spirit, after the Scoutmaster has signed off on that requirement, you have trouble, right here in River City, that starts with T and it rhymes with B, and that stands for a BOR which does not know their place in the scouting advancement procedure. How did the scoutmaster handle being told he doesnt know the boy as well as you guys?

"Non-Believers" View of Bible-Believing Christians
OldGreyEagle replied to Rooster7's topic in Issues & Politics
I have an idea i know where this will end up, but in Pennsylvania, No car dealers are open on Sunday nor are the liquor stores open until noon. I think these are civil laws based on religious precepts. Now, I know you will say these arent "valid", but why havent the "blue" laws been a target of the ACLU? -

It turns out that I am an Assistant Course Director for the Council's Powder Horn Course. One of my duties is to come up with either a water bottle or travel mug. What I really want is a water bottle in the shape of a Powder Horn. With a shoulder strap and screw cap at the narrow end I think it would be uber kewl. So, any ideas where I can fine such an item?(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

The Jamboree is indeed a Boy Scout only event. The Venturers attending were there as staff. One also has to remember that as much as the Jamboree is a BSA event, its also an International event as well. As Eamonn commented in another thread, the Polish Girl Scouts camp was an attraction. When I was at the Jamboree in 2001, the Polish Girl Scouts also improved the aesthetic quality of the environment. There are indeed many young ladies, but none there as participants from the US

Scouter roles for 18-21 year olds
OldGreyEagle replied to stlscouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
And yet if you are 18 -21 and in Venturing or the OA, you are considered a youth. -
Call the National Scouting office. I was able to verify and obtain an Eagle certificate for a co worker who earned Eagle and never received the certificate or medal. She will need to know approximate date, Dad's birthdate, location of the troop and social security number. (I think). The operator I talked to says she gets requests like this all the time.

Seattle, have you read my posts? I mean actually read my posts? I have no problem with teaching scouts actions have consequences. I think I said that. lets see, on Wednesday, 8/3/2005: 1:31:54 PM I posted "...There are more ways to teach that actions have consequences that making somebody do pushups" and on Posted: Sunday, 8/7/2005: 7:27:39 PM I posted "...And I dont see anyone on the opposite side, those who oppose punishments such as push-ups saying that actions have no consequences..." So I struggle to understand why you think I dont want scouts disciplined. If the scout was suspended for a month for stealing still doesnt know how to act, perhaps its time for him to go home for a much longer time. Tell you what, you still havent defined oppresive, perhaps we should give you 50 every hour until you do so.

"...Life is hard. Boy Scouts is training for a boy to learn how to be a man in real life..." that right, the sooner the boys learn that might makes right, that bullying someone is a great style of leadership and being abused as a youth makes a wonderfully adjusted adult, the better the whole planet will be...

Why attend District/Council events?
OldGreyEagle replied to CNYScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
The troop I serve "used" to have a tradition of going to camporees but never winning anything. We had problems that ranged anywhere from not knowing how to build a fire to having scouts quarrel amoung theselves. I made a challenge back in 97 that if any patrol placed First, or Second, or Third in a Camporee the patrol leader of that Patrol could throw a pie in my face at a meeting. The only condition I had was that I would supply the pie, i mean, wouldnt you? Any way, three pies later the scouts know what it takes to win and they prepare. Another scout leader in our district was well known for his almost waist length hair. His pony tail was his signature. Last Klondike (2005) he told his troop a 1, 2, 3 finish by a patrol would mean he would cut it off. His Patrol's finished 1 and 3. See if you can get the PLC to make a committment to attending a Distirct events and not stop at the first "bad" experience. Stay at it, have them critique their experiences and improve, I might be fun, and a pie in the face actually doesnt hurt (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle) -
Should the BSA promote creationism?
OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
"maybe now Weird Al and Judy whatshername" Please Please Please Pull-eeze, Thats Judy Tenuta, the "the Aphrodite of the Accordion" She strives to convert the world to be an accordionist, hey it COULD happen -
SP. since you have ignored me twice, I guess I have to ask a more universal question. When issues like this come up, such as push-up, cleaning latrines, etc. as punishment, the argument for this type of punishment is always "but they have to be taught actions have consequences." And I dont see anyone on the opposite side, those who oppose punishments such as push-ups saying that actions have no consequences, only that as Madkins points out, not doing pushups mean you may have to think thorugh a problem rather than a mindless command of gimme 20 I dont see anyone arguing against consequnces, I do see dissagreement over whats an accpetble consequnce is

"Non-Believers" View of Bible-Believing Christians
OldGreyEagle replied to Rooster7's topic in Issues & Politics
I understand what Rooster is saying, I think. Mel Gibson makes the Passion of the Christ, with his own money as Hollywood didnt think it had a big enough market and the movie is denounced as being an instrument of anti-semitism. Yet when Steven Spielberg made Schinders List or Saving Private Ryan, no one thought there would be a wave of Anti-Germanic feeling, or when Pearl Harbor was released, no one warned of anti-Jappanese sentiments. A man pauses to cross himself before eating in a New York City cafeteria may receive dozens of rolling eyes, while the cafe proudly annnounces a Kosher menu with a Rabbi on-site. And every time a terrorists bomb goes off and a muslim group claims responsibility, politicians fall over themselves to remind people most muslims are peaceful law abiding citizens. People who quote the bible are seen as weird, strange or whatever, while the Koran is somehow seen as an object the western world would do well to study and understand its message. I have heard that Christians should "just keep all that religious stuff to themselves and leave the rest of us alone", yet muslim women who wear their headgear (I dont know the correct term) are seen as just being true to their faith/culture. There are a few issues that Rooster and I differ on, but on this, I think we are together. Madonna "converts" to Kabbalah and the worlds press congratulates her on seeking a more spiritual life. A pro-athelete talks about Christianity and is branded a Jesus Freak. -
