How is a scout to know if say a hamburger has been cooked to the correct temperature ? Color, weight, time are all unreliable criteria. Unless the scouts like eating hockey pucks.

If the local pressure is 9.298 inches Hg then the boiling point of water at 29k is 154.551 F. If my calculations are correct. Again from my understanding of the science it is a function of temp and time. Are you looking for an instant kill temperature ? Some unreliable research shows it to be 163 F. I don't trust that number however, because it does not take into consideration environmental factors.

Troops Attending Church on Campouts
King Ding Dong replied to SMWally's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I attended Catholic schools, and although it has been a long time, I recall a discussion with the parish priest regarding mass and who was authorized to conduct it. IIRC it did not require an extreme circumstance for a group of lay members to get together and conduct a worship service. In fact he seemed to encourage it. I don't know all the rules, maybe he was a rouge priest. How do you handle backpacking trips ? -

If the CO has agreed to follow that rule in the Charter Agreement, it is clear that both parties are not acting honorably. -

Absolutely!

Further evidence the BSA has put to much into the Brand. Eagles not only fly over water they walk on it.

Ultimately it comes down to sitting all the parents of a den down and telling them they have two choices. A. Pick a DL and work out who is going to do what. Or B. Disolve the Den. Their choice, it is their children and they explain their decision to their children.

I know from the new FDA cooking guidelines released a couple of years ago it is not just a function of temperature, but also the time at a specific temperature. It really depends on the pathogens you are trying to kill. Generally 140 F over a 35 minute time frame, but there are some bacteria that can still survive IIRC. If IIRC you cannot rely on a specific altitude, but must know the current atmospheric pressure. Learned this from calibrating my PID smoker controller. Sous vide cooking uses this principle. Very low and slow. But seriously who wants to cook a chicken breast for 24 hours ? I wanted a Thermapen but $89 was just out of reach, so I settled on a Themoworks RT 600 6 second thermometer. Grilled food tastes much better now that I can dial it in better. Hopefully the new Cooking MB will address this issue better. I really think all patrols should have a good digital thermometer.

Remember that 80% of Scouting occurs at the Den level. Making sure the Dens are covered is the first priority. Women can be just as good or better at the CM position as well. It is extremely important to get the Tiger parents involved and trained. It must be made clear to the all the parents that without their involvement the Pack does not "Go". Even the single mom can do something, however small. I am a firm believer in having sign up sheets and if you have a parent that is not signed up approaching them face to face and asking what roles or positions they would like to fulfill. Do not ask them to volunteer. Make it an expectation.

Salute to the "Go-to" people in the unit

Have you had your coffee yet ? Of course he is worthless. He is the same guy that only shows up if there is a Starbucks within 30 minutes of the campsite and actually drives his SUV 60 miles for a soy latte in the morning. -

"Lands end" prizes. That's funny. Must be in an upscale council. -

Pinewood Derby Guy - stores the track in his garage, sets up the track fixes the sensors and know the software inside and out. Mysteriously his sons win 1st and 2nd place every year. -
I could have written this exact post. Insist one of the parents step up as DL and become ADL and/or get a good Den Chief. You can certainly assume the role at the unit level. You will need to change your primary registration at the service center to CM. Likely will have to fill out a new app. Sending out an email soliciting a new CM will not work. You must identify some possible candidates and two or three committee members gang up on him or her and give the pitch.

Breaking Newsman - when not in SUV charging his phone, sits in camp chair announcing how many bars he has, sports scores, state of impending weather and major controversial jury verdicts around the campfire. -
A message from Queen Ding Dong Happy Left Handers Day to all my fellow lefties....I celebrated today by using rightie scissors in my left hand. And thought about my Evil third grade teacher, that tried to force me to be a rightie....something about it being evil and I could change if I really wanted to....

King Ding Dong replied to njeagle92's topic in New to the Forum?
Don't get me started on that one. Short answer. Announce you are all resigning from the committee and if the parents want to continue the pack you will be happy to assist them in the transition. -
You are in a RURAL environment IIRC ? Then your position makes a sense. Finding a Composite Materials MBC is probably a challenge, I think we have four in our district. My sons favorite MB this summer was Geology. Though I still am uncomfortable with cramming a bunch of school work in a week. What works for your boys should be what counts. Merit Badges are fun IF the boy has an interest. I don't see much interest in the Cit. badges.

Is camping in a cave camping?
King Ding Dong replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Advancement Resources
I am IH because I am PTO president, so I am not paying any bills (except my taxes). If this is what the boys really want to do, I am fine with that as IH. As a parent this is not the scouting program I envisioned for my son. They will get 15 legitimate camping nights in one year, just barely. This kind of program may be good for the boys that play 3-5 team sports a year. That is not my son at this point in his development. I can take my boys family camping and such, but that isn't scouting, and in my mind lockins, B&B, and cabins are not either. There is more of chance of tornados and severe thunderstorms on any given weekend than there is a of sub 10 degrees nights in winter here. -
Map and Compass in an Urban Environment
King Ding Dong replied to koolaidman's topic in Camping & High Adventure
I grew up in an urban environment, but my kids have only lived in suburbia. In that context it is a good idea. Are the boys confident using the various mass transit systems ? Transferring from one to another ? Knowing how to act around the wino and bag lady that mutters to herself or talks crazy to you? Combining those elements might make it a more useful experience.
