  1. I suppose one of the big differences between Scout cooking in the '60s and '70s versus today is the difference in the primary cooking tool....heat. "Back in the day" it was all done with wood fires. I cannot recall a single campout meal prepared on a gas stove when I was a Scout. Now probably every troop uses stoves frequently. In some ways it is much easier and cleaner, but to me it seems like a fire offers a little more versatility. It's kind of hard for me to envision somebody roasting a chicken on a spit over a Coleman two-burner stove.
  2. That article has to be one of the most unbelieveable things I have ever read. evmori is correct. There is a gold mine of comedy material there.
  3. OK. I'll step into the Confessional. I have always had a problem with "Thrifty". I don't always spend wisely. I could do a better job of looking for a less expensive item I need, instead of buying the first thing I see because I want to just get it and get it over with. I'm not a good shopper, and fortunately, my darling wife makes up for this deficit in my character. Also if a person could follow me around for a day they would probably note that I buy at least one thing that I could live without. It's been a little over 30 years since I earned the Personal Management merit badge. If I t
  4. The camping requirement for Eagle Scout seems to be really pretty minimal. Unless I am missing something, the sum total of camping to earn the Eagle rank, is equal to the sum total of what is required for Camping Merit Badge (20 days and 20 nights). Apparently the Scout in question obtained that. The fact that he was elected to the Order of the Arrow (which was referred to by Mr. uz2bnowl as the "white thingy with the big red arrow"), speaks to the camping issue in a way as well.
  5. It appears that by what you have posted that the boy became Life somewhere in '04 or '05. And he served as an SPL for 6 months which is also the required time of active participation in the troop in the time from Life to Eagle. So I would conclude that for 6 months in 2005 he was a very active member of the Troop. What happened since then is anybody's guess. He certainly must have dragged his feet on some merit badges and his service project but that is not the issue. By all I can see from your post he has completed all requirements...most a long time ago...but they are complete. Just bec
  6. Hi t4eagle, I would love to post more for you but have to crawl out of bed early to head to camp to do some Mic-O-Say activities. Here are two good links to start you on your research: For the Tribe in the Heart of Americal Council- H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation http://www.mic-o-say.org/ For the Tribe in the Pony Express Council- Camp Geiger http://www.micosay.org/ Hope you find what you are looking for. BTW What is the name of your camps honor group? WAKWIB Known among the Mic-O-Say as Sachem Sunlit Valley
  7. That is hilarious. The seller's other items are a hoot!! "Why post it here" the skeptic asks.... A Scout is Cheerful, and that little post cheered me up a bit! Thanks for doing your good turn for the day Mr. SctDad! Now, to post my bid on those lucky tickets.
  8. The fact that there has been a very lengthy discussion about this topic is wonderful in my opinion. We are all involved in serving youth in an organization that gives young men the possible opportunity to explore and discover that there is Someone or some thing greater than themselves. We can't really define that for him, but unlike much of society, our organization doesn't squelch or minimize the importance of "faith". When the boy stands before Review, we hope to see him freely share what he has done with that opportunity, and not just with Reverent but the 11 other points as well.
  9. OK. Well, since this is a thread, spun from a thread, that was spun from a thread, that(I think) was spun from a thread that had something to do with God.....here is my lyrical contribution. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Praise Him all creatures here below! Praise Him above ye Heavenly hosts! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen! That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Peace.
  10. Went out and tried to update my profile. Afterword went back to a previous post of mine, clicked "view profile", and saw nothing. Me thinks there be a glitch. For the record, and should anyone be remotely interested, I am in Kansas City, Missouri.( And one of a small handful of rebels that refuses be a KU fan. How so many folks in Missouri can love a Kansas team challenges my weak mind!)
  11. The Scout in question, or you if you are a leader, should have a Scout Handbook that gives the requirements. Here is a web address to give you a quick overview if no Handbook is nearby. http://www.scouting.org/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/eagle.aspx Concerning the project: The Scout needs to follow to the letter the instructions in the official Eagle Scout Leadership Project Workbook. We have a couple of leaders in our Troop who mentor the Life-to-Eagle candidates. They look over the project workbook and give suggestions for improving the write-up. But suggestions are as far as it g
  12. It's pretty clear that the adult camping requirement is both very fair and very important to the theme of OA being an HONOR. Scouts and Scouters alike should never regard membership in the Order as an automatic thing that anyone can enter. I actually dislike the idea of adults being inducted through a district recommendation (especially if the camping requirement is waived!!). Candidates should only appear as the result of a Troop election in the case of youth, or the nomination of the adult by the troop committee. I believe that it is only in the operations of a Scout Troop that one can be
  13. kinda late jumping onto this thread, but thought I should "for the record" I received the Eagle Scout Rank in 1977 right here in Kansas City Missouri (Heart of America Council) Rejoined Scouting in 2000 as an ASM. My oldest son earned Eagle in 2007. Youngest son is on the trail, currently First Class and should be Star sometime in the next couple of months.
  14. "Three months behind on EBORs??? That is simply not acceptable" Understand your amazement, but I that is why in most of the HOAC that I am familiar with, Eagle BOR is organized by the Candidate's Troop Committee with a district or council rep. present. Could you imagine the huge backlog there would be in large districts like Blue Elk or North Star where there are 15-20 kids up for Eagle in any given month and it was up to a district committee to pull that off. They usually have quite a crowd of kids at our roundtable keeping 4 or 5 district guys busy looking over Project workbooks as it
  15. Happy that the boy admitted his wrong, and is willing to make amends. Sad that the professionals in Scouting seem to have a problem with that aspect of character themselves (in many cases). Agree that units should work to become as self-governing and self-supporting as they can. Disagree that paid professionals should be done-away with entirely. They can play a vital role, but I think many have lost focus on what that role is. The comparison of them with the "lawyers" in Jesus' time is interesting, though not necessarily valid. At least one of the Pharisees (see Nicodemus in John 3) r
  16. Some of you folks with Scouting roots in Kansas City or St. Joseph, Missouri may find this article interesting: http://www.kansascity.com/105/story/199021.html It concerns Mrs. Jimmy Bartle Taylor and her relationship with the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. Mrs. Taylor is the daughter of Roe Bartle who was a very dynamic Scout Executive in the first half of the last century. He founded the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He is also considered the founder of the American Humanics foundation, and was a strong influence in the early growth of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.
  17. I am an Eagle and a veteran of 6 years on our camp staff. I took a big break from the Scouting action as well. Getting re-connected about 6 years ago when my oldest son joined has turned out to be a major blessing. It's been a lot of fun, especially since many of my old staff-mates have returned to the program with their kids. I hope you are having a super time as a leader!!!
  18. Great post, as is to be expected from you. Whether you know it or not you do have a gift to motivate and inspire others with what you write. Two thoughts to share with you: 1. I think a 'higher power', to whom I refer to as God, has guided and blessed your Scouting experience. 2. Although you may end up in a warmer climate, you will not quit. You, my friend, are addicted. Only disease, dismemberment, or death will end your Scouting career.
  19. Fuzzy's proposal is quite interesting. It would be pretty intimidating to some, in that it requires hard work. Unfortunately in recent years I have come across not a few in Mic-O-Say who want additional recognition (the beads and baubles and what-not) with only a minimum of effort. The standards in my opinion seem much lower now than when I was a kid. Concerning the "national" rumour, it has been going around since the '70s.....I'm still waiting.
  20. Enjoyed reading some of the entries. And will probably visit again sometime. I really like the blog idea, especially for you with a lot of history and good memories. Scouts and Scouters could learn a few things from reading a journal like that.
  21. Ditto to NJCUBSCOUTER I have been visiting this forum a lot in the past week or so and have not seen anything of the sort.
  22. Most youth thrive on some level of competition. Do the Sea Scouts engage in some contest with other ships..like BSA Troops do at Camporees? If these exist, building excitement for that could be fairly easy to accomplish. That's just one quick thought. I'm sure there are other folks who have more comprehensive ideas, as this one just takes into account working toward one particular event.
  23. {{Yah, useful stuff, like "don't use hair dryers, electric toothbrushes, or electric razors" "stay away from open doors and windows" and "stop tractor work." }} I guess that would mean the dining hall at our camp would not be a very safe place. Only screens in our doors and windows. And a lot of very tall oak trees around it to attract lightning. Just tonight at my house there was 1 random stroke of lightning probably less than a mile away. The radar showed storms 20+ miles away. Although we had cloudy skies at the time, I certainly was not expecting that one and only lightning

  25. Our council has an email newsletter. Our district has a yahoo group that announcements can be posted to. Subscribers can receive these posts via email if they wish. They have been useful from time to time. In the both cases the information is often posted at the last minute and so may be of little value to those who try to plan ahead. Weekly email updates from our Scoutmaster have been very helpful, and he very much tries to look ahead and remind the Scouts, leaders, and parents of events in the coming months
