  1. Thanks for posting that link. It seems Scouting is getting a lot of good coverage. BTW: We had a cook at camp way back in the day that we thought looked as good as that Den Mother. I think it was a case of youthful optimism.
  2. double-post fumble(This message has been edited by WAKWIB)
  3. Are you on the national appeals committee?(This message has been edited by WAKWIB)
  4. Sure, Ed, the kid was probably an ax-murderer. If there was something truly criminal involved, I highly doubt it would have even been appealed. From what has been revealed, the only "criminal" thing involved is that the Troop apparently chose to add requirements to that ever-vague thing of Scout Spirit. "Ev the letters of denial from Troop, District and Council state that Justin did not meet Scout Spirit Requirement. Troop and District letters mention not meeting Troop requirement of attendance at Troop meetings and outings. What is interesting is that Justin earned Life June 2006 an
  5. Buffalo Skipper, Chalk that one up as an A+. Bringing along some Webelos and a prospective scout A++. I think you'll see some momentum build. The Mosquitoes have developed a taste for some real meat and it might just be contagious!!
  6. ljnrsu, Thank you for posting this info. I appreciate that you took the time to be of service to this scout.
  7. ljnrsu wrote on 1/2/10 "Ev and vol_scouter, I can corroborate mdsummer45s story. In a PM I offered my help in assisting her, which she accepted and between May 19 and Sept 2 we each exchanged in excess of 50 emails and more than a few phone conversations. She also faxed me copies of Troop, District and Council letters of denial. I also know by name another member of the forums that also assisted her in critiquing and editing Justins appeal to National. Mdsummer called me on Dec 2 after getting off the phone with National. At which time she informed me that the appeal was still sitting at Na
  8. Maybe wrong, but reading through this over the course of time, I didn't think the appeal to National was initiated over 6 months ago. Folks in contact with mdsummer could answer that. But it seems a post to this thread about a month ago said it went there in Nov. Is that close to correct? If so, the way I do math, it's only a little over 3 months old. I wondered why folks were crying "this is taking too long." Maybe they thought the appeal to National went in way back in April 09 when this thread started.
  9. Sorry Eagle732. All the folks who cry hoax have no proof of such. In the Almighty Court of Wannabee Scouting Experts, I suppose all are guilty until proven innocent.
  10. You will need to be a bit more specific than that. Are you looking for a particular topic? On many topics that would relate to scouts and adult volunteers and that they would really need to know, your local council office would be a good place to go to first for information.
  11. Either of your options is proper. If you really need a nudge to one or the other, ask your son. It's his "party"! Enjoy this special event:)
  12. One thing that I would suggest is that (mainly if you have boys setting up and maintaining the troop site) is that you put a "policy" in place to keep the admin. postion functional. What I mean is that when one scout ages out of the program just don't count on him to devote the time to be a consistent admin, but that it passes to someone else, Pronto!. We have had a good site with qualified and eager scouts doing the work over the last 5 years, but we have had a couple of gaps in service that have gone for several months due to weak transition. A site that falls even a little behind in upda
  13. There's a mixed blessing in that when they are busy writing a nasty-gram to the Chief, being kind to beavers, and perhaps making WAKWIB a national holiday, they are distracted from doing real damage. Perhaps they should be working on their resumes and job searching skills, because I have a feeling more than a few of the "lifers" in Congress will be looking for a second career.
  14. Welcome to the campfire, and I am indeed happy that you are hooked on the Scouting program. This forum is full of good insights and ideas. And a fair amount of lively opinions. Since you are a new leader, and concerning "best practices", I would encourage you to look first to your immediate resources. BSA publications, the training that your council and district provide, and the long-term leaders in your district and council. Every unit is unique and all have a process involved as they gear towards the aims and methods of Scouting. Happy Trails!!
  15. If you reply to a particular thread in the archives, it will reappear in the "Today's Active Topics" list. Maybe it will ignite some fresh discussion and maybe those who posted a bunch on it during it's first trip will take a pass. But to bring it to the front page might give new members a chance to see it quicker. Many general Scouting topics come up over, and over, and over again on this forum. Wait long enough, and your favorite subject will emerge again.
  16. Lisabob, I think Merlyn is referring to use, not charter, in regards to the playground. If the city owns the playground, no Scouts allowed. You're probably familiar enough with the "reasoning" behind that.
  17. The size of that Eagle problem thread probably causes folks some problems. Possibly related to the age, type and temperment of your internet browser program. I posted there a little while ago, and it takes quite a long time to direct you to the reply page, and the same when you submit a post to it, quite a while to revert to the original thread. I'm sure that is a glitch totally unrelated to the PM and registration issues.
  18. "...but no answer ever took that long as national likes to answer and get the scout back on the trail if he wins. But like I said earlier, there is NO appeal here, never has been. If there was one submitted scan the acknowledgement letter and post it." Exactly what "Trail" is the scout supposed to get back on if he wins an Eagle Rank appeal, nldscout? I imagine in most cases, by the time the appeal is resolved, the candidate is over 18. The only trail left for him is that "one-hour-a-week" as an adult volunteer. The only thing you and BadenP seem to base your hoax theory on is t
  19. "Easy trivia - which president wanted it to be a grizzly bear?" Would that be Teddy Roosevelt? Using no life-lines, and that's my final answer.....
  20. "Which will come first - this answer or one from mdsummer45?" Well I hope everyone realizes by now that this Scouter Forum is not real, that it never existed, and it is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated in the history of the world.
  21. If I looked really hard I think I still have my old collar-less uniform shirt around. Probably put it on for the last time sometime in 1978. And it was almost too small for me then. I was also around when the Oscar de la Renta "short-shorts" came out. The kids these days think uniform is odd??? I wonder how they would take to wearing shorts that hit 3-4 inches above the knee and long, knee-high socks held up with garters.
  22. A variation on SMT224's Basic Breakfast. Add chopped onions and peppers. Spoon finished dutch oven cooked stuff onto a flour tortilla and roll it up. The breakfast burrito is a favorite in our Troop. If your tortillas are chilly from a night in the cold, set a dutch oven lid on a couple coals "inside-up". That makes a nice surface to warm them up before loading the goodies.

  24. **sarcasm phaser set on stun** WARNING- Carrying 4-5 Dutch ovens, 20 lbs of charcoal, charcoal chimneys, and coolers to carry perishable foods into a campsite bring you into the realm of "Car Camping." Please be advised that car camping is on the top-ten list of the lastest edition of "The Purist's Guide to Scouting Heresies." **sarcasm phaser returned to holster** Back to reality, the dutch oven is God's gift to outdoor cooking. Even the beginner can produce great, no-fail goodies. A great way for boys to learn that cooking can be fun!
