  1. I never wore my Eagle Patch. As for the shoulder loops... I wore red until I outgrew my ODL. Then when I got a centinnial Uniform I gave my ODL to the Troop for a troop uniform closet and left the Troop numbers on it. So I switched to Green. It's not a big deal IMO.
  2. I'll withhold my judgment till the meeting in May. It won't really change my Scoutmaster conferences. I discuss duty to God, Country, Self, Family whatever when I discuss Scout Spirit with my Scouts.
  3. "Downey also said the organization uses its private organization status to avoid compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act by barring overweight Scouts from some programs" Merlyn I think your friend jumped off the cliff there..
  4. I wear military surplus boonie hats in the backcountry. Mostly ballcaps at Summer camp or the like.
  5. Ironically enough I'm downgrading my Swiss Army knife to the smallest possible knife. I think in my 10 years of Camping I've never had to use a pocket knife for anything beyond opening packages and cutting tape.
  6. I'm the young ASM in the a troop I grew up in. Moving to a Troop I don't have a kid in would be hard. I feel like there's a stigma and fear around it that I don't want to subject myself to.
  7. Ironically, I text in complete sentences with punctuation. It drives my friends nuts. My parents use more texting slang than I do.
  8. Found this article, I'm a little conflicted on the changes. Curious to see what everybody else thinks. http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2015/04/06/no-one-one-contact-provision-applies-digital-contact/
  9. How much of that is that time blurs memories, and everything in the past seems rosy and awesome in comparison to the present?
  10. Guide to Safe Scouting I take as rules. not guidelines. Same goes for the Guide to Advancement.
  11. Terry asked the mod team, and we had a choice to make about whether we stayed on the old forum until everything could be transferred, or make the jump immediately. We chose immediately. Yours in Scouting, Sentinel947

I forget, I'll check if I remember. 5) Uses: stove top style (Stews, soups, oatmeals) or Oven (breads, pies, cobblers, casseroles, pot roast, etc.) Both 6) Do you own an aluminum Dutch oven? No cast iron 7) Do you use DO's on activities other than plop camping? No 8) Aluminum foil liners or clean as you go? Depends on the patrols decisions, adults swear by the liners 9) Oil or wax? Oil, didn't know you could use wax/.. 10) Troop use any other cast iron other than the Dutch Oven? yes. Griddles and skillets.
  13. That's pretty cool. Sharonville is the town to the south of mine.
  14. Stosh: so we're both arguing for Servant Leadership? Your desciption of the scouts and square knots is exactly what I'm looking for.
  15. Stosh: Your definition of Servant Leadership is a bit off the mark. Traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid.†"The big boss" so to speak. By comparison, the servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. A Servant Leader isn't doing his job just to help others, but to train, develop and empower those others to be successful and reach their own goals. I heard alot about Servant Leadership at NYLT, and didn't hear about it again until I was doing Army ROTC in college. I think the BSA's training materials would do good to focus on it a bit more. 16. Can't read the article without signing up.
  17. Your son will remove should remove his webelos badge and den strip. Replace his pack number with his new Troop numbers if the two units don't share numbers.
  18. I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to help our Scouts become stronger leaders. However, I believe that should be separate from the Position of Responsibility Requirements. Most POR's have the opportunity to exhibit and exert leadership. However, it's not part of the requirement. That is an important distinction to make. Sentinel947
  19. Yes. Like many of my posts that particular post suffers from a lack of clarity. Sentinel947
  20. It's a shame that it took the membership issues to clarify such a stupid policy regarding who is adults and who is not.
  21. Moving this ASM to another position could work, it could also move him into a snipers nest position where he lobes his unsolicited mandates from another direction. Ultimately it's an on the ground, case by case scenario. Only you know this ASM. We don't. Your mileage may vary. As an ASM myself, I'd never accept a Scoutmaster position if I wasn't allowed to mold my ASM team the way I saw fit. I'd be happy to keep any current ASM's on provided they are willing to follow my lead and not go behind my back to the Scouts or the parents. This guy sounds like he's got his own game plan, and maybe you are a better man than me, but I'd be paranoid about having somebody like that working on my team. It'd be uncomfortable to have this person removed, but I think sometimes we tiptoe around troublemakers more than we should. Sentinel947
  22. I dunno, as part the younger generation myself, I'd rather see less of the Machiavellian games being played and more compromise. I vote, I pay attention to policy positions, but I don't love politics and I try not to get upset about what happens in it.
  23. Blessed Mother Teresa struggled with doubt of her faith. I think from time to time we all question our own closely held beliefs about religion, politics, and other important topics. That's a healthy and normal thing for anybody. Pope or non- Pope.
