I'll be the guy to say I'm happy with the uniform as is, except that I feel like it's a bit over priced.

I second Gipper, no reason to wait for the patch. The Arrow and plaque is part of the ceremony, and should wait till the BG.

Tonight being Wednesday, the PLC met to discuss some business and usual, and the SPL led a discussion about the patrol method. I deliberately didn't give the SPL talking points or a syllabus to use, I discussed with him what he want to talk about, but I feel like the SPL's and the PL's need to own the transition process, not just the final result. There's plenty of skepticism, but it seems like things will smooth out as time goes on. The SPL did as good a job as any 15 year old explaining the patrol method. Better then some adults I've met. The Scoutmaster seems to have bought in from the last

Ok. Part of that is not just the BSA, but also society and how it views teenagers as needing to be protected and coddled.

Back in 2009 at NYLT they had us go outpost camp by patrol, and the staff and adults were like 2 miles away.

Ealge90, I sent you an email.

I created a new thread out of the one about the uniforms. didn't want to derail that discussion. My question is, even with the G2SS. Adult leadership on a trip was always required. "It must be present" What does that mean? What is "Camping Independently"? Is 300 feet camping independently of adults? Are the adults "present" if they are 300 feet away? 200? What's the magic numbers here?

21st Century Wood Badge a Thing of the Past

As far as I can tell be reskimming "Baden Powell, two lives of a Hero" by Hillcourt, every time BP changed duty stations. (India, South Africa, England, Africa, Malta, England, South Africa) he went with a unit except for his change of duty station from Africa to Malta. That doesn't disprove the story of working tickets. Hillcourt may have ignored it, or perhaps BP missed out because of how is unit rotated around. Doing some research I find some evidence that it was more of an enlisted mans' thing. I think Baden Powell might have had a good sense of humor. http://www.word-detective -
Like I understand that here at Scouter on a messaging board, we create topics to discuss hot button issues. Who goes onto a BSA blog and turns the comments from e cigarettes to the membership policy? Those people need to get a life.

Can you cite that?

Thought I'd chum the waters a little. I hope I'm not going to need a bigger boat. http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/ What kills me is not the articles, but the comments... Sentinel947

The other thing being bombing neutral countries? or wire tapping political opponents in a reelection campaign he already had in the bag? -
I agree, the Scouts normally do an excellent job of that. I'm more specifically asking for help with discussion topics on the transition from Cubs to Boy Scouts and what being a Boy Scout is all about. Since this group is mostly parents, they won't be as knowledgeable as the people we have here on Scouter.com, and I'm wondering what the basic essential topics are and how to slim them down.

I'm joined when the ODLR was still around, and I now wear the Centennial one. I don't think the uniform needs an overhaul except in the fact that it's not worn outdoors. It's like a military dress uniform almost, that nobody wants to wear it in the field because it will get dirty. I wouldn't mind seeing a return to the old green colors, but now Venturing kinda uses a similar color. I personally don't care if it's fashionable or not. Uniforms in general just aren't fashionable. Giving away your individuality to fit in with a group isn't fashionable. I think the line came up in another thr

And theists talking to Atheists as well. When people's thought processes are so different, it's easy to say things that are insulting without realizing it. Like I said, I love and respect BP but I don't agree with him on everything. I think like our brothers and sisters across the pond the BSA will eventually move to a more neutral policy. Not soon enough for you and your sons, but definitely within our lifetimes. I cringe when people bring up that BP quote. Given what I've studied about the man, I don't think he'd approve how it's used as a weapon of the religious vs non believers in Sc

My Troop has an open house in a few weeks. Where Webelos and their Parents can come visit the Troop. The Scouts put on some activities for the Webelos, and the parents are brought to a conference room at the CO. I was asked by the Committee Chair to give a talk about The transition from Cubs to Boy Scouts, and what Boy Scouting is all about. I've got maybe 5-10 minutes to talk. I was wondering if anybody had done something like this before and had suggestions about topics to include. Sentinel947

Lots of loaded questions, comments, declarations and statements in here. My goal in replying is to be as respectful as I possibly can. Good for Hitchens. (Who like Bill Maher and Richard Dawkins, have some rather close minded, bigoted and dogmatic beliefs of their own.) BP believed that religion was important to forming character. BP's opinion isn't the end all, be all. Nobodies opinion is really. The BSA still follows BP's line on religion, and probably will in the near future. Some will object, and some will push for the change. I personally see the value that being religious has

21st Century Wood Badge a Thing of the Past

I heard what Jblake and Jason did in regards to tickets. I could go back and reread BP's biography and see what he did after his time in India. -

I've seen projects ranging from $250 to $25,000. Both are possible to fundraise for. What kind of project are you considering?
