<<......Last campout the Alpha patrol put all of their cook pots way dirty......So guess what they spent friday night at the next campout washing pots, pans and utensils instead of playing ghost in the grave yard......Lesson learned.......You should have heard the patrol sunday morning packing up......I think every patrol member inspected the patrol box........A lesson they will never forget.......>> In my opinion, about 50% of the value of Scouting is discovering that actions have consequences that you can't avoid.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem with this unless it's disrupting the program in some way, getting subsidies for non participation or preventing someone else from participating in the program.

I read this thread and I have a question..... Are these the same schools and students who say they value and promote "diversity"? It's really very amusing. It's not surprising that public schools, the home of liberal orthodoxy, are usually hostile to Scouting and Scouting values.

<> Our pack generally charges $5/month in dues. For Webelos II we charge $30 which reflects the $15 Scout membership for the year + pack dues. Personally I think there are two reasons for a gift to boys completing the AOL: 1) it recognizes the boy's achievement in completing the Cub Scout program and 2) it should give the Cub Scouts watching the ceremony the idea that they want to do that too! In that spirit, I favor a gift of either a pocket knife or an orienteering compass, but the decision on what to do is left to the Webelos Den Leader.

What does nonsectarian mean to you?
SeattlePioneer replied to Rick_in_CA's topic in Issues & Politics
<< It means not making rules that favor one religions beliefs over that of another religion.. It means not forcing one religion to follow the belief system of another religion.. It means hands off in the any differing viewpoints of what is moral and what is not, as well as if Jesus is or is not the son of God, or if there are many Gods, or if your higher power isn't even considered a god.. IT MEANS HANDS OFF.. >> Oh, balogney, Moosetracker. You recite the preferred position of atheists and the Supreme Court, which is to restrict or eliminate all religious expression in the public square. The only religious discussion to be accepted is that of atheists, on the theory that THEIR religious beliefs don't constitute a religion, and should therefore have a monopoly of expression in the public square. Of course, that's unreasonable and absurd. What REAL diversity involves is that everyone is entitled to and encouraged to express their religious and moral beliefs, and to struggle to have them accepted by the community at large. -
What does nonsectarian mean to you?
SeattlePioneer replied to Rick_in_CA's topic in Issues & Politics
When I explain "duty to God" to new Cub Scouts, and their parents, I say it includes two things-- 1) That children respect the religious traditions of their families 2) That Scouts respect the religious traditions of other families. I hardly find it surprising that in relatively homogeneous communities Scouts reflect the patterns of prayers and such that they find and experience in their community. But I personally would encourage a family with religious traditions outside that norm to provide their own example of how they pray and lead a prayer for the Scout unit.from time to time. -

I like to have a major activity or competition as the focus for pack meetings. Do the activity, hand out awards and that can often make a good meeting that boys and families can enjoy. I've suggested a pumpkin carving event for our October pack meeting to our Cubmaster. I've further suggested that we hand out pumpkin seeds to boys to plant this summer, with the idea of growing pumpkins for carving at the pack meeting.' There are lots of ways that basic theme could be embroidered, such as taking pictures of Cub Scouts and families beside their pumpkin that can be e-mailed to family members, contests for the biggest or largest number of pumkins grown and brought to the pack meeting and so on. All the carved pumpkins could be illuminated with candles and viewed with the lights off. That would probably be impressive. I'm thinking you might get a lot of mileage from a $2 packet of seeds. There are lots of ways that

Current BSA Policy Vs local option poll
SeattlePioneer replied to MichScouter's topic in Issues & Politics
The poll presents an unrealistic option. The Supreme Court decision made it clear that BSA retained a right to it's policy of rejecting homopsexuals because this was a consistant, national policy. If BSA proposes to adopt a local option policy, that exemption would very likely go away, and at a minimum it would open BSA to a whole nother round of legal challenges which would very likely require yet another Supreme Court decision upholding BSA's right to decide it's membership policies. And whether the USSC would bail out BSA yet again when BSA opened another can of worms is open to question at best. The REAL option is maintaining the current policy or being subjected to all the state and local laws that prohibit any discrimination against homosexuals. Do you want EVERY church with a Scout unit to be REQUIRED to accept homosexuals as youth leaders? Put THAT in your poll and let's see what kind of numbers it generates. -

Bugle and buying a new instrument
SeattlePioneer replied to AlabamaDan's topic in Open Discussion - Program
We have a Scouter who plays "To The Colors" at Cub Scout Day Camp on his tuba for an opening ceremony. I think the bugle calls would likely sound terrific on a French Horn. -
"... last bastion of anti-gay bigotry ..."
SeattlePioneer replied to Trevorum's topic in Issues & Politics
The advent of 'gay marriage' in Washington State will probably result in many more homosexuals being barred or kicked out of Scouting. A person who is married to someone of their own sex is an "avowed homosexual" by definition, and screening such people out of BSA leadership positions should be easier than when such people were hiding their relationships. -
> I agree. However, some districts mainly want to use Unit Commissioners as District Nags to get units to do things that the district and council want done. My district had it's annual planning meeting last Saturday, and there were quite a number of things UCs are expected to nag units about. As an example, the District Executive wants a list of unit membership chairs, advancement chairs and so on. If no such animal is there, they want one apopointed. There is good reason for such things, but there is also a risk in being seen as the District Nag. However, being a District Nag doesn't require much unit level experience, I would suppose.

No doubt Democrats will continue to favor LONGER suspended sentences for criminal violence.

A lot of poor people are firearm impaired due to poverty. We need a "gunstamps" program to subsidize the purchase of firearms and ammunition and of course for "education" in using firearms!

Slippery slope: YPT question
SeattlePioneer replied to Once_Eagle-Always_Eagle's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Any reasonable interpretation of the rules will be fine. Unless, of course, something bad happens. Then plaintiff's lawyers (and the Scout Council's lawyers) will go over every fact with a fine toothed comb to look for any i that wasn'y dotted or t that wasn't crossed, with the aim of blaming the volunteers and finding fault with what was done. The more detailed and specific thye rule, the harder it is to enforce in complicated situations, so the Scout Council and BSA can expect to hold themselves blameless and to find fault with what the volunteers did. And Merry Christmas to YOU! -
As district membership chair, I helped our District Executive in organizing an area recruiting event at a local library. I was surprised at the turnout of twelve families, which I thought was excellent for the middle of December! Apparently the DE has organized a couple of other area recruiting nights which he didn;t tell me about, and the attendance at these was poor. For this one, the DE had a yard sign campaign along some major arterials. He had nine schools deliver leaflets to be taken home by students at elementary schools. He did "stickering" of meeting announcements at two elementary schools, and I did the same at two others (Friday and Monday). In addition I was at another elementary school last Thursday and handed out some stickers there. Only one completely paid application, but nine other families completed and signed applications and they will be invited to den and pack activities at a couple of differents packs after the holidays. In addition, one 5th grader who turned eleven and is eligible to join Boy Scouts now.

I'd have a Bear or Webelos Den make one as a project.
