  2. Hazing and Youth Protection are the reasons that the OA tap-out has been toned down to simply reading off names off of a list and asking if they want to be an Arrowman.
  3. In the "real" world, when an employee doesn't fulfill his job duties, he could be "removed from his position", or in other words...fired. His boss should have noticed that he wasn't doing his job and therefore, has the right to fire him. What about the employee that has a job, but doesn't do it to the best of his abilities? He isn't fired, he just doesn't get the awards (promotions, raises, etc.). It is the same thing, but in Scouting, where the scout can learn from his mistakes. Would you rather give him the credit for just sitting on his hands for 6 months instead doing his jo
  4. you can always get a Trail Stove (a wood burning stove) from http://www.trailstove.com/ It is lightweight, the fuel is cheap (FREE) and there is no danger of it leaking.
  5. But the counselor will not give the scout his signed card until AFTER the scout has filled out the workbook to the counselor's satisfaction.
  6. How about a Merit Badge counselor that REQUIRES the the scouts complete the merit badge worksheets before he signs off on the merit badge. I have seen evidence where the counslor has said that the scout had finished the merit badge but didn't finish the worksheet to his satisfaction, so he wasn't going to sign off on it. Isn't that considered adding to the requirments?
  7. Check out places like this: http://www.woodbadgestore.net/shop/
  8. I guess with threads like this one, people reading them can come to the observation that we piddle, twiddle, and resolve Not one dam thing do we solve Piddle, twiddle, and resolve Nothing's ever solved in Foul, fetid, fuming, foggy, filthy. . .
  9. Just remember that . . . We know we belong to the land, And the land we belong to is grand!

  11. I read a lot about different faiths and religions like Judaism, Catholicism, Wicca, etc., what about one of the largest supporters of Scouting, the "Latter Day Saints"? How do the LDS troops figure into all of this? Pete
  12. Why is it not fine to do that, but, according to their website, it is OK to microwave the food? I mean, doesn't food get to be a lot hotter in the microwave than a pot of boiling water?
  13. Now you can use a nice woodburner stove from www.trailstove.com No fuel to leak out, no bottles of either gas or liquid to worry about, and the fuel that you use is real cheap. (edited to correct url)(This message has been edited by PeteM)
  14. I am looking for ways to explain what Scout"s Honor or just honor is to Scouts. In talking to them, a lot of them have "no clue" as to how important their "honor" really is. Pete
  15. OGO, It sounds like to me that the parent in question wants you and the scouting movement to be a babysitter for him. Has he ever said "I appreciate the work that you are doing with my son, and he seems to be coming along fine" or something to that effect?
  16. I guess that he should have called you the inhaler. How else do you use the smoking tobacco products? I have heard that comment before, and it usually gets the point across, without anyone taking offense by it. It usually brings a smile to all those that have heard it.
  17. I got this link from a friend of mine. Don't know where else to post it, so I put it in the "Open Discussion" section. http://tinyurl.com/29tr2w Pete(This message has been edited by PeteM)
  18. It sounds like a nice idea, that way the Scouts are helping to be extra 'eyes and ears' to help the boys in the troop in their leadership positions.
  19. Man Scout = Jamb..... never mind
  20. Not to change the subject, But... Merlyn_LeRoy - Which one are you: http://www.firesigntheatre.com/ Just curuious
  21. Here is a link (for those that want to ) take a look at what ScoutPride is all about. http://tinyurl.com/2oj3k5(This message has been edited by PeteM)
  22. erickelly65 - What I was saying was, I agree, the boy is being removed from this troop because of the incident, but he is not being removed because the leaders are staying on in the troop, but because the incident happened. It wouldn't have mattered to the boy's parent(s) if the leaders were removed from the troop or not. They are removing their boy BECAUSE it happened in the first place. The Scouts were not involved at the time of the incident, only after the parent decided to let it known to the troop in general.
  23. > Since all was "supposedly" resolved, how do you know that the boy was NOT going to be withdrawn anyway?
  24. Someone will be along shortly to show you that he feels that boy-led is a fallacy. Other than that, Sit down with your SPL and the PLC, discuss what you have observed the problems to be, and how you would correct them, IF you were in their shoes. Don't do the work FOR them, just work WITH them in developing and excuting a better program. Contact your UC for any help that he/she could offer. Have you and your SPL visit some of the other troops in the area for ideas (after contacting the SM of the other troops to explain why you are there). Just my $0.02 Pete
