In your situation, I think I would go with (d) and possibly also (e). On (e), I do not think there is anything wrong with a committee member at a committee meeting asking the Scoutmaster (but only the SM) what the PLC has been up to. The SM is the link between the committee and the PLC.

I guess I should have added that our pack was not a "feeder pack" to any troop, in the sense that there was (and is) no troop associated with the same CO as (or meeting in the same place) as the pack. At the time, my son's pack was sort of a de facto feeder pack for the troop that he joined. The troop is the second-closest geographically to where that pack meets, and for the previous 10 years or so about 80 percent of the crossovers from that pack went to that troop. But tastes and habits change over time, and now about 90 percent of crossovers from that pack go to the other, slightly closer troop. This may have gotten slightly off-topic, but maybe not, because it shows Cubber an example of how there are choices to be made.

Cubber, I agree with all of the above, I just wanted to add a comment on the word "send" in your post. No Cub Scout leader (whether den leader, Cubmaster, CC or anything else) has the authority to "send" anyone anywhere. It is between the Cub Scout and his parents. In the case of my son, after we visited the troop that most of his friends had gone to in the previous 1 or 2 years, he decided he did not want to visit any others and just go with that troop. That is not necessarily "by the book" but I decided he was sure enough that it did not make sense to try to "force" him to visit others.

Ireland seeks Eagle now before she ages out
NJCubScouter replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
We have very few formal "rules" in this forum. The forum owner, @SCOUTER-Terry, prefers that the formal "rules" be kept to a minimum, leaving the moderators to handle things mostly on the principle of "common sense." I think it is "common sense" that the only people with "Moderator" in their "titles" should be Moderators. That is why I edited Stosh's profile. Terry has also stated on a number of occasions that complaints about the Moderators should be addressed directly to him in a private message or email, and not posted in the forum. Based on those statements, regardless of whether you call it a "rule" or not, there should be no further discussion of this subject. Please go back to discussing the subject of whether young women should be permitted to join Boy Scouts now if necessary for them to make Eagle. Since the posts have been nearly-unanimously in the negative, I am not sure what else there is to discuss. But if there is, go ahead. If there is further off-topic discussion, this thread will be locked. -
I don't remember when I first saw snow. Since I was born in January in New Jersey, the first time I saw it I may not have known what it was. And at whatever age I became conscious of things like that, snow was already just part of the landscape for a few months a year.

Display Names, Scout Law, and Common Sense

No, it isn’t. You cannot have “Moderator” in your title. You are now just “Premier,” at least until you change it. That’s a pretty lofty title anyway. -
Ireland seeks Eagle now before she ages out
NJCubScouter replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
Given the fact that she has been participating in two troops (one in NY and one in Canada), even before there was any indication that the BSA would open up Eagle to young women anywhere near her time as a youth, it appears that she wants both - the same as many boys. Which doesn’t mean she can have both, if she misses the cutoff, even though it’s through no fault of her own Did someone hack your account? -

Can’t argue with that, but I find it interesting that someone who has labeled himself a “BSA Heretic” is not more sympathetic toward others who blaze their own path. -

Well, it’s not a theory at all. You can tell by all the laughter. -

I certainly wasn’t prepared for that video. -
Ireland seeks Eagle now before she ages out

As people have said, that rule is for people from other countries, and it specifically says so, so I don't think that's going to help her. -

I think we need to remember a couple of things here: 1. The BSA, as far as I know, has not responded to Ms. Ireland's request. Therefore, any comments along the line about how National has devalued the Eagle, made it worthless, cheated previous recipients, etc. etc., are incorrect, because National has not done anything on this subject. Personally I think National is going to reject her request for all of the reasons that have been discussed in this forum. But whatever may happen, it hasn't happened yet and we shouldn't treat it as if it has. 2. Let's please remember that this is a 16-year-old girl we are talking about, and not just some hypothetical 16-year-old girl, but a specific named 16-year-old girl. She is not some evil monster. She is an ambitious person, and she is asking for something that almost everybody agrees she shouldn't get, but it does not make her a bad person. I admire what she has done, at least up to this point, even though I disagree with some of what she has said and I disagree with her recent request. -
All I'm saying is that National should think about and study it. Maybe ask some Native American leaders whether they feel "honored" by OA ceremonies. You don't speak for them and neither do I. Maybe they think it's a great idea. I don't know. As for Native Americans and African Americans, I did not know there was a contest going on over who was deprived of their rights the longest. But if you're keeping score, you might want to consider that while citizenship was extended to African Americans in 1868, in large portions of the country they were not permitted to actually exercise most of the rights of citizenship until almost 100 years later. Which of course, does not make the injustices done to the Native Americans any more or less compelling. They stand on their own.

Maybe this would be a convenient occasion to consider leaving the Native American ceremonies and nomenclature to the people who invented them, and come up with something of our own. We might even consider reducing the ceremonial aspect, regardless of what "theme" is chosen. Full disclosure, I have not been involved with the OA other than doing the ordeal when I was a Scout. I never really participated after that. I think I've seen it called "sash and dash" in this forum. But that's my opinion, anyway.

Ireland seeks Eagle now before she ages out
NJCubScouter replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
Plus, if she wants, she can put on her college apps and resume something like "I have become nationally famous for helping to persuade the Boy Scouts of America to open its programs to girls and to make young women eligible to earn the rank of Eagle." Or something like that. It ought to be good for a point or two. And she has the newspaper clippings to prove it. Although personally I think this would have happened even without her, but maybe a year later. Or maybe not. That of course assumes that the person reading her application is not someone who has a strong objection to the new BSA policy, but that person would also have a negative reaction to seeing "Eagle Scout" on her resume. Added: I mean, how many 16-year-old girls, other than a celebrity or the child of one (including zillionaires and politicians) could be referred to in a thread title only by her last name, and everybody reading this forum would know who she is? I am only aware of one. -

I suppose one could argue that a change in eligibility for an entire group of people is different from changes in rules or requirements, but in my opinion it is not different enough. -
Okay, well that falls within the time period when I wouldn't have seen many Cub Scouts in uniform, or wouldn't have been paying much attention. I definitely don't remember a time when the American flag patch had to be earned, and have never heard of that. I know that the World Crest had to be earned at the beginning, but it was introduced after my time as a youth, and by the time I became a den leader it could be worn by anyone.

Using lure of becoming Eagle Scout to recruit Girls

I don't remember ever seeing that, so if it was, the point must have been either before 1966 or sometime between 1976 and 1998.

That seems to make sense. In my days as a Cub Scout leader, I recall that June 1 was the date mentioned in the Cub leader book as the "moving-up date" (except for fifth graders of course) and I assume that is still the case. What I wonder about is whether they are going to have time to do the groundwork they need to do with the CO's so they can actually decide what kind of pack(s) they want to charter and acquire new leaders if necessary. Or are they just going to assume that all the CO's have heard about this and that they are going to come rushing forward on their own? And/or, are they going to rely on the existing pack leaders to arrange things with their CO's? If National chooses either of the last two options, I don't see much chance of success.

Well, the ladder is towering over the girls, even though it's further away from the camera, and the girls (assuming they are age 6) are most likely between 3.5 and 4 feet tall, so I think it's safe to say (safe, get it?) that only adults are using this particular ladder.

Yes, the obvious symbolism must have gone right past me.
