NeiLup, I really liked your post except for "expect their children's values to be congruent to theirs creepy." The child doesn't have to have values that are parallel (equidistant apart but never occupying the same point) to mine but I DO expect them to be somewhat congruent - ((From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Congruence is the state achieved by coming together, the state of agreement. The Latin congruere means to come together, agree. As an abstract term, congruence means similarity between objects. Congruence, as opposed to equivalence or approximation, is a relation which implies a kind of equivalence, though not complete equivalence.) I.E. I would prefer that he didn't choose to be an axe murderer, that would not be an example of being either congruent nor parallel to my values. I happen to think my values are reasonable okay - that being the case why wouldn't I want his to be the same or better?

Isn't there a BSA Insignia guide that should explicitly answer this question? Yes. It should look just like this: http://www.scouting.org/media/insigniaguide/06.aspx The Army style represents the flow of air streaming behind the Army as it advances. It isn't really appropriate for civilians - and can be taken as part of a military uniform should hostilities breakout - which is also why the current pattern camouflage military uniform(for what ever is current) is not supposed to be made available to civilians. Although it regularly is.

Welcome. Pull up a cup and join the campfire. And Semper Fi.

Sorry in advance, but I just have to... "Pants w/ribbons" snicker

Unfortunately since the Parent is aware, has witnessed and doesn't seem to think it is inappropriate enough to stop it, that kind of ties your hands in that direction. What you can do is discuss with the Cubmaster. Or bring up disruptive behavior in a Committee meeting and discuss remedies on a pack level there, (if someone is so disruptive that we can't carry out the planned activity we reserve the right to send them home anyway). Or elevate to the Chartered Organizational Representative. Or, if the child is an actual danger to himself or others, which is what you seem to be indicating(the way I'm reading it anyway) without saying so - then you are fully within the program to refer him to the Cubmaster to be sent home and kept from meetings until he is no longer a danger to himself or others. (Actually I don't think you even have to involve the Cubmaster, you can just send him home in this case - but a "heads up" notification to him would be in order if you chose this route.)

SR540Beaver, I never said I'd seen RA's outside of Southern Baptist Churches. Just RR's in some of them. And in the same way that you are saying that RR's were developed for use in the SBC sphere I'm sure that someone is thinking that RA's were developed for AG churches. The difficulty that arises is due to the amount of traveling I did while on active duty, and because I tried to stay involved in churches as I went, I've been to quite a few.

Stosh and Kudu!, Thanks!

jmwalston, as I never worked in the Washington, D.C. area I never once saw either of those uniforms worn anyway. If no one wears them then getting rid of them is an efficiency. USMC, still the best bang for your Defense dollar.

GW, have you ever been in a room with a bunch of Digital (read: Computer wonk) Warriors with no Mountain Dew? They may rate the camo.

Don't like the idea of a pin, except for military rank insignia I've not yet met a pin that stays on well. While I wouldn't be against a Veterans patch (maybe a very small strip that only Veterans wore directly under the flag on the sleeve - possibly a different color for category - Currently Serving Veteran, Veteran, Retiree. It really isn't necessary. We have days to remember our fallen service members and to remember to consider the sacrifices made by our currently serving and those, made by our previously serving members of our Armed Forces. If we are actually incorporating those into our programs - or at least mentioning them, then as Scouters we are promoting the civic virtue of that kind of service without excess glorification.(Not that I personally have much of a problem with SOME glorification - but not to excess).
-
GW, no one said he was touching the boys... the phrases were " direct service position" and "direct contact" which in context means was a Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster or possibly a Merit Badge counselor. Although direct contact would, in normal conversation, mean what you are indicating.

Hiking or Backpacking? If Backpacking light, middleweight or heavy(gourmet)loads What kind of terrain? Flats, Mountains, Hills? Budget a consideration? Or willing to spend in this area?

Just ensure you make it clear whether you are looking for a "Program" answer or just opinions, wanting opinions and not making it clear can generate some heat in these forums at times.

Thanks, that makes a whole lot more sense and sounds pretty cool.

Not from Buffalo... Welcome - thanks for giving your time AND for going to training. Yeah, the kid had had the temerity to ask when we were going to turn the heater on..., It's been on for a week. I wasn't even wearing long sleeves, much less a sweatshirt and he's asking about heat? We keep our house temperature during this season where the rich folk have it in July. SWMBO(She Who Must Be Obeyed) is a child of a Utility worker - she hates paying the Utility company - Just like her Dad. Plus, A Scout is Thrifty. And why heat the house above what you need to keep the pipes from freezing if everyone is under blankets and asleep? It's craazy I tell you.

Good one. I'll be borrowing that one, thanks.

Shoot, I'd take as "A Sign" that he wanted an ASM patch but didn't know how to ask for it. He'd be mentoring a Patrol Leader so fast his head would spin in little fleur-de-lis patterns on the floor. After, of course, he cleared the background check if I didn't already know him.

Congratulations! Look,IMHO, the surprise award is often the best signal that you got it for why it was designed. And it's great that you weren't expecting it, it signals that you weren't angling for it, and that you'll continue the high level of performance because you weren't just putting the effort out to get the award. Kudo's to you! Thanks for your Service to Scouting!

In fairness, the Marines did change to the "Mar-Pat" digital camouflage for the utility uniform about six (seven?)years ago which was so successful that the other services joined in with their own variations. But I also doubt you'll see sweeping changes in the Mess Dress, Dress, Class A or B uniforms anytime, or at least anytime soon.

thank a Veteran. If you agree then, Thank a Veteran anyway, it's Veteran's day. The purpose of which is to hold a day on which to have: "A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good." http://www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetdayhistory.asp

I don't get it! What purpose does this thing serve?

A belated thank you!

Coca Cola is also reputed to have a fairly high ascorbic and phosporic acid content. Guess that depends on your definition of what a high acid content is. While your stomach is usually around a ph of 2, Coke is usually a 2.5 - other coke pruducts run from around a 2.5 to 4.5 ph. I wouldn't let a spilled carbonated drink stay on a tent - finishing off with the detergent and a rinse is a great idea!

GW, I'm glad you appreciate it. I don't do much to intentionally torque him but, I do enjoy winter...
