  1. Patrol activities are activities conducted by one and only one patrol. With SM approval, patrols can do things by themselves such as hike, camp, or even go to the latrine. However, if two patrols want to do something together, that becomes a troop activity and things get complicated. I guess that adult supervision is needed for two patrols in case the PLs get into a fight.
  2. "Being a devout Christian, I have always found it best not to read books or see movies like this" Why? Are you afraid that your faith isn't strong enough to survive? Better yet, how do you know what the book is about until you read it? The primate of the Orthodox Church in America once opined that our faith cannot be very strong if we cannot question it.(This message has been edited by Gold Winger)
  3. " (there's a right way and a wrong way to tie a know, and a Scout should know the right way!)" I know how to tie many knows. What's that have to do with trees? I'm the know guy, we have a tree guy, we also have a fish guy and a critter guy. Big deal.
  4. The truck is on top of the flagpole and it is used to store spiderwebs.
  5. "The best bet if you plan on attending is before you go call the CD and ask any questions or go over any concerns you might have." How is a new guy supposed to know what questions to ask? As for me, since I plan to never take the course, it is all moot.
  6. I'm so glad that I keep my life simple. To me there are trees with leaves and trees without leaves. For critters there are cute ones (suqirrels and chipmunks) and pests (deer and racoons). PITA birds (they crap on my car) and cool birds (hawks and iggles).
  7. When I was back there in llama school, there was a lama who put forth the proposition that you can petition the lama with llama. You can petition the lama with llama. You can petition the lama with llama. You CANNOT petition the lama with llama! Can you give me sanctuary? I must find a llama to ride, A llama for me to ride. Can you find me llama asylum? I can't ride it anymore The LLama is at the door.
  8. ""Well, if I let one of you sell, I can't really tell the other one not to...." Besides - this should be worked between units, not put the store managers in the middle." I've been doing this for more than a few years as well as selling GS cookies. I've never heard of a store allowing more than one unit for a given time slot. I've been to good locations where the store gave us 10 - 2 and another unit 2 - 6. Never heard of a kick off date for popcorn which a prohibition on early selling. In my council they send the forms to the Scouts well before any units have their information. Good luck.
  9. "If an adult leader in BSA gets arrested for securities fraud (not during a scout funciton), do they get removed from the program?" More than likely.
  10. Although it may be rude to poach on another pack's "territory," this isn't GSUSA with rules regarding who may sell where. I'm amazed that a pack would just "show up" at a location to sell popcorn. However, I wouldn't want to see a flurry of rule making regarding how far away from home you can sell.
  11. I just fininished reading the trilogy. In my simple minded opinion, the third book kinda fell flat and actually became shrill in its preaching. The first two were enjoyable, even with the obvious anti-religion bias. Lyra's world has the catholic church controlling just about everything in science and politics. The third book just left me wondering why I wasted an evening reading it. On the other hand, the companion book, Once upon a time in the North, the story of how Lee Scorsby and Ioerk Byrnison met, was quite entertaining, if anti-capitalist.
  12. So Michael, rules are only to be applied when convenient or if the children notice that they are being broken? What happened to "A Scout is Obedient"? I guess it should be changed to "A Scout is obedient when it is convenient or if he feels like obeying the rules." So we have a "professional" who not only disregards a rule for his own convenience but then lies about it (we're engaged so it's okay). " the leaders always fail to look at it from the kids point of view," There's a reason for that. As many have stated here before, kids have heads full of mush.
  13. "A question that immediately comes to my mind is "How were the Cubs to know that the couple wasn't married?"" That really doesn't matter, does it? The rule is there, he's a paid representative of BSA so he has even a stronger obligation to abide by the rules than we mere volunteers.
  14. The British flag break is as follows: Flags should be raised briskly and lowered ceremoniously. An alternative British tradition for flag raising is to hoist the flag while it is still rolled up and tied with a slip knot or a thin piece of cotton. A quick and sharp tug of the halyard will break the cotton and release the flag to fly free. This is refered to as "breaking" the flag, and is often used to mark the beginning of an event, or the arrival of a VIP.
  15. How about, "I'm sorry honey, we've been shacking up for four years now but I work for an organization that supports traditional values even though I don't."
  16. .(This message has been edited by Gold Winger)
  17. "Did any of the Cub Scouts notice or care? " Considering that some of the Cubs might have moms who have a new sleepover friend every weekend, the probably wouldn't think it strange. After all, we now live in a society where . . . aw heck, it's the 21st century.
  18. Hmmmm . . .. they're engaged so it really doesn't matter because engaged is almost like being married. So what about dating, that's almost like being engaged so that's almost like being married? What about "we just met" that's like dating. So what if he gets canned? He knows the rules.
  19. Naaaaaaaa . . . that's something that he made up. There are too many Eagles who finished their last merit badge on the day before their 18th birthday.
  20. Had a thought whilst mowing my lawn. If BeeDub had intended to reference the "official" BSA way of folding the flag, he would have referred us to a BSA publication not a third party's web site. Then to follow that with an attempt at obfuscation is shameful.
  21. Gotta laugh. I've seen technical manuals like this.
  22. Yes, if you look at the requirements for Iggle it says, "While a Life Scout, plan, develop and give leadership . . ." Nothing there about having merit badges done before starting the project. I've known more than a few Eagle candidates who did their projects and then finished their merit badges.
  23. O come on Beaver, the rules are the rules. What sort of example is this setting?(This message has been edited by Gold Winger)
  24. We have opinions and mine are those of someone looking in from the outside. There really should be some prerequisites and time in grade requirements before going to Wood Badge. A friend is a DL and just registered as a ASM this summer when one son crossed into Boy Scouts. He hasn't done any Boy Scout Leader Training yet but is trained in his primary position of DL. Someone told him to take Wood Badge so he signed up. He's like a duck out of water. Was really confused about why everyone was shaking hands with their left hand. Never heard about the Patrol Method, to him a patrol is just like a den. Knows nothing about Boy Scouting. He's struggling and will survive but I think that it would be easier going if he finished Boy Scout leader training and maybe spent a year with his son's troop.
