SM assigns PLs, wow! One method that I've read about that has worked fairly well is that each Scout writes down the names of four other Scouts which includes at least one who is older than the Scout and one who is younger. Now, you start going through the lists and finding the intersections. Where the intersections are largest, you have a patrol. Why have one older and one younger? One is the voice of experience and the other is one who needs guidance.

Ev, BeeDubya won't answer that question, just like he avoided the one about a third party collecting money for the Scouts.

This is the Guns and Motorcycles forum, right?

I don't believe that there are any national standards for polar bear. We gave it out for every campout when it dropped below freezing.
-
If you have the free time, go for it but in your shoes, I'd look for as much CM training as I could get like UOS and Roundtable.

"This would includie begging for money to feed the troop llama." Boy BeeDubya, you accuse me of misquotational activites but I have a hard time believing that you would stoop this low. Come on, you know that the troop's llama could just graze, I'm more concerned about the troop's lama.

"GoldWinger, You CAN tote your piece on commercial flights. It just has to be secured in a locked case in your checked baggage. At least that's what I do. It does depend on the airline but most of them have similar regs." They have to allow that because it's required by law. However, that ain't toting and it ain't gonna do me any good if Mohamar and Hussein start yelling in A-Rab.
-
BeeDubya, I didn't quote you oyt of context. You've pontificated but still haven't answered a direct question which doesn't surprise anyone but that means that all we have to go on are your actual unqualified words, which were "Taking funds without exchanging it for a product or service is a violation of the BSA money earning policies for units."
-
"GW I believe we're talking about a cub scout pack here, not a boy scout troop. SctDad, please correct if I'm wrong about that." Oops! My bad. I didn't even notice that it was in the Cubbie forum. (hanging my head with shame)

I'm kinda confused. Is this a "family outing" or is it a Scout outing. If it is a Scout outing, the PLC should have prepped the PLs who can talk to their guys. The transport ASM should have arranged vehicles. 'Nuff said.
-
I believe that youth can solicit funds if they are doing so to feed the troop llama. However, if the troop has a lama, he's on his own and has to feed himself.

"BW writes, that you can take a donation but you can't ask" Hey! I said that. BeeDubya said, "Taking funds without exchanging it for a product or service is a violation of the BSA money earning policies for units." The inference in BeeDubya's statement is that you can only accept money in exchange for goods or service.
-
Bob, bob, bob, that's not what you said. You said, "Taking funds without exchanging it for a product or service is a violation of the BSA money earning policies for units." I didn't know what you meant "taking funds" so I asked. To my simple, poorly educated mind I'd be taking funds if someone just hands me a dollar and I accepted it. "If you offer to sell someone some popcorn and they pay you but choose not to take the product you did not solicite the donation, you offered a product." You still haven't answered my question. What if you don't offer them popcorn and they offer you money? Should I offer them popcorn in exchange? What if I don't have any popcorn?

I'm one who believes that if one considers a rule or law to be unjust that if feels strongly enough about the situation that he should make a statement by violating the rule. However, if one does that, one must be prepared to suffer the consequences. For example, I would like to tote my 1911A1 on commercial flights however, I am not willing to suffer the consequences so I don't. On the other hand, I think that a 65 mph speed limit on the flat, straight interstates of the midwest is plain silly so I drive 80 because I'm willing to trade off the fine for time saved. In this case, the DE felt that the rule was silly enough that he didn't need to follow it because he's engaged. However, he needs to be prepared for the consequences which should be termination.
-
So BeeDub, is it your contention that if a person comes to you as a Unit Scouter and says, "Here's a c-note for your troop" you cannot accept that money?
-
Just a momento. Kinda like hanging onto the keys from your first car or . . . I'll probably get moderated if I give my next example so I won't.
-
I'd aruge that having a "donation jar" is soliciting donations. No different than the March of Dimes cards at stores. Accept donations but don't solicit them.

"GW, why do you question Ventura's being a Navy SEAL?" Because he wasn't a SEAL. He was UDT, both swim and went through BUD/S but UDT and SEALs are different beasts. The controversy is all in the minds' of Ventura's people. UDT and SEAL were merged in the 80s, long after Ventrua left the Navy. In the minds of SEALs, he was never a SEAL because he was never on a SEAL Team. He claims to have painted "SEAL TEAM 1" on the water tower at Fort Benning. Since he was never in SEAL TEAM 1, why would he have done that? So what can you believe about his history? Maybe it started innocently enough. Maybe when he started wrestling, the publicity people figured that SEAL sounded better than UDT and then he couldn't figure out a way out of it. Or maybe he figured that SEAL sounded better since few would know what UDT did. Who knows?

I'd have to say that you'll probably know very quickly the marital status of families in your unit without asking any questions. The language people use tells you their status. If a guy talks about his wife, they're married. If he talks about his fiancee, they're engaged. If he talks about his girlfriend, there's no commitment yet. If he talks about his wife and his girlfriend, there's some sort of problem. Well, usually a problem considering we're a monogamous society but maybe they watch "Swingtown."

Not adult sexual behavior but improper adult behavior. Yes, I'm old fashioned and I don't approve of shacking up, having children outside of wedlock or having a stream of "friends" spending the night.

Ever hear of the library? Books are free there. "Read reviews, duh!" So you'd rather take the word of others than open your own mind and read it yourself. Mullahs and Christians do have much in common, don't the?

Insect Study MB: Req to collect insects

Almost forgot, there are three types of rocks: big rocks, little rocks and ones that hit you in the head. Big rocks can become little rocks but little rocks rarely become big rocks. My life is simple, I like to keep it that way. -
Llama's are strange when you're a stranger Llama's look ugly when you're along. Llama's seem wicked when you're unwanted. Llama's are uneven when you're alone. When you're strange . . . llamas look out from the rain. When you're strange. . . llamas don't remember your name. When you're straaaaange . . .
