  1. What's the purpose of keeping one pack alive on paper only? Is it so the boys can finish up with the same number on their sleeve? I can just see too many messes happening with trying to run two packs as one, one being twice as much paperwork. Of course the DE would love it because he wouldn't lose a unit. FWIW, if I was involved, I'd vote to fold the one unit and just join the other pack as a ready formed den(s).
  2. "How do you pay attention to millions of kids you cannot see?" Because I have Wonkavision.
  3. "then how is it you know they don't do them anymore?" Because I pay attention.
  4. Egads BeeDub! What purpose would it serve to just have yet another adult scheduled activity? Is that the way that you lived your young life? Did your mom say, "Come on BeeDub, let's go climb trees" or did you and your friends just decide to climb trees on your own?
  5. Not according to the PDF file linked by CNYScouter. Every activity says "First Grade."
  6. You must have had a different life than I did. The kids that had transistor radios didn't carry them around, that was for another class of people. What does it matter if a scout troop goes sledding on a garbage can lids? You're still missing the point. As you missed the point with the comis books as you miss so many points in your efforts to prove that Scouting has no flaws and today is better than yesterday in every regard.
  7. " I did not realize we had switched topics." Ya gotta pay attention BeeDub. " I remember 40 years ago when adults claimed that all kids did was listen to music and read comis books" I don't remember that. As I recall, reading a comis book only took about five minutes, so even a dozen comis books in a month would only take about an hour a month. How many hours a day does the average kid spend texting, IMing, and playing video games not to mention just watching TV. Music? Most of us had to be fairly stationary to listen to music, you couldn't tote your phonograph around when you were climbing trees.
  8. Aha, as usual, you miss the point. I'll try explaining this in simple terms . . . . Kids used to do things on their own. Sledding, climbing, etc.. Your solution to kids not doing things is to just exacerbate the problem by taking them to do the things that they should be doing by themselves and then say, "See . . . they are doing stuff." Maybe that makes sense to you but it really doesn't make sense at all.
  9. I'd refuse to participate because I don't do metrics. Make it a three miler and I'd be there.
  10. Okay, I'm confused . . . what is the purpose behind having LFL doing "Lion Cubs" during 1st grade? Isn't 1st Grade the Tiger Cub year? Is this an effort to get the homosexual atheist dollar? What about the Lion Cub promise ". . . be a good Scout." How can they be a good Scout when they aren't part of Scouting.
  11. Did I say that anything was prohibited? Noooooo . . . so what's your point?
  12. Of course it's not appropriate. Why on Earth would you want to have the Webelos actually spend some time around actual Boy Scouts and see what they do, day and night.
  13. is incapable of being facetious. (This message has been edited by a staff member.)
  14. " Actually, even if you didn't buy it there, it might still be a good idea - the "mountain gear heads" I've known who work at those shops won't care, because they're in it for the discount (and usually really like to show newbies how to do things)" Very true. Even the owners can be very helpful in situations like this. I bought a pack directly from Alps Mountaineering based on the description. It was supposed to fit me well but I was miserable with it. So I stopped in at a privately owned shop that carried Alps. Told him what I had and he said, "Bring it in and I'll fuss with it and see what's what." I took it in, he loaded it up with stuff and spent about 15 minutes trying to get it adjusted to fit me. Just couldn't do it. He found another pack on his wall that was in my price range, spent another 15 minutes fiddlling with that one. It wound up felling like it was made for me. I bought it from him and he even gave me an unannounced 10% discount because I'm a Scouter. As long as you don't make a habit of buying at Wally World and then going to them for help, most small shop owners will be willing to help because they know that they survive by giving better customer support.
  15. "Jews kicked themselves out of Restricted clubs," How can you kick yourself out of something that you were never in?
  16. I don't see any dancing either. You must be one of those guys that sees ballet in pedestrians walking down the sidewalk but that's to be expected from someone like you.
  17. "Ahh the "good old days". There are more things for a scout to do today then there were in the 60s. Communities have more resources now then 40 years ago, technology has made more adventures available to more people of less skill than was available 40 years ago." Technology has made adventures on the internet available to American youth. Skiing at a resort. Organized rafting down a river. COPE courses. All great. Yeah, sort of. . . . What abut the primitive way of doing things. Sledding down the big hill on garbage can lids. Swimming at the pond. Climbing trees, swinging from ropes, exploring caves, building go-karts, punching contests, all the fun stuff. My depression era father may have done more with less than I did but my kids are doing less with far more than I ever did. Yep, it's our fault. We bought the video games or allowed them into the house. We buy the cell phones and computers so they can text and IM their friends rather than go over and visit in person. We organize every minute of their days (day care, school, after school day care, baseball, karate, learning center . . .) to make sure that when they have free time that they have no idea of what to do with it. The world is a big and dangerous place and we aren't doing anyone any favors by being over protective. Bully? Don't worry, I'll go to the park with you and protect you. Don't talk to strangers? When do they see a stranger since their parent is always with them? So when they are finally out on their own, they're fair game for any fast talking con man.
  18. " I find he blows it almost as often as he gets it right, but if it's helpful to some that's great, eh?" It could be that he thinks the same of your poorly spelled musings.
  19. I guess that you don't have a dictionary. Does this help? agnostic (g-nstk) noun One who believes that there can be no proof of the existence of God but does not deny the possibility that God exists. atheist (th-st) noun One that disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.
  20. I found a discussion about an agnostic but nothing about an atheist. Maybe your link is bad. Thanks.
  21. So? That refers to two contients. How many of those countries have "America" in their name? We don't call Germany the "Federal Republic." We don't call Mexico the "United States." We don't call China "the People's Republic" unless we're differentiating between good China and evil China. Since Brazil was mentioned, we don't call it "The Federative Republic". You see, most countries are commonly called by whatever comes after the "of" in their name. Unless you're trying to avoid offending a bunch of banana republics. Let's all join hands and sing the PC anthem "We are the world".
  22. "Wearing the U.S. Flag (which, by the way, is not the 'American' flag -any more than the Flag of Brazil, also an 'American' country)" It's not the "U.S." flag either because Mexico is actually "The United States of Mexico." The US of A is the only country that I know of that has "America" in the name, hence it is the American flag and this is America. Sheesh! Talk about PC.
  23. Interesting. Maybe the leopard can't change his spots.
  24. That's an interesting duck that you have there. The "law" that you quoted is from the District of Columbia, I don't live in DC so it has no bearing on my life. I'm wondering how civilians were prohibited from flying the flag until 1920 when there were no federal regulations regarding display of the flag until 1923. "Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart." It ain't a flag, it's a replica. Furthermore, if the patch is a flag then the DoD is violating the law by displaying it backwards on airplanes and uniforms. A flag is a flag, a pin is a pin, a cupcake is a cupcake and a toy is a toy. When push comes to shove, it is really nothing more than a scrap of fabric that represents what used to be a great country.
  25. "Gee, it sounds like you fell hook line and sinker and followed through just like the author wanted, the movie first, then the book series, "I thought the movie was pretty good. Read the book to and enjoyed it". Now granted, you're an adult and can read through the symbolism that a youth might miss." Usually authors want you to read the book long before the movie is made. Maybe I missed the symbolism because I have a very dim view of organized religion having had it rammed down my throat for the first 20+ years of my life by my ordained zealot father. Maybe I enjoyed it because I appreciated the dim view of organized religion that it presents. I'll let you know after books two and three.
