Is there ANYTHING a scout is ALLOWED to do anymore ?!?!?
Gold Winger replied to DeanRx's topic in Open Discussion - Program
" If my son did this at school, he would be suspended. If he did it in a bar, he would probably be sued and/or arrested." This is a very sad statement on our society. -
Maybe it is time to look for a new troop.
-
If the BOR knows that the boy did properly get signed off it has an obligation to not promote the boy. This situation should be referred to the CC who should have a conversation with the SM about ethics. It might be time for a new SM.

I was going to respond but there's no sense in it. (This message has been edited by Gold Winger)

As my father would have said, "can not going change anything?"(This message has been edited by Gold Winger)
-
If I say that I'm going to do something and then "change my mind" what value does my word have?
-
Denver, you missed a couple of important things with Andy Griffith. Andy was the star of the show and Barney was the comic relief. Be that as it may, if Andy said that he was going to do something, he did it.
-
I don't miss your point, integrity and honor to you are situational.
-
Why is that so hard to understand? It is a pretty simple concept. Don't give your word unless you intend to keep it.
-
"People can change their minds. There are ways to do that while retaining your integrity." Maybe for you but not for me.

The law says that I can hold animal sacrifices in my backyard. However, that upsets my neighbor who asks me to cease. I agree, primarily to get him off my property because he smells like garlic. Do I still have an obligation to do what I said that I'd do? According to you, I don't because there's nothing that he can do. According to me, I must because I said I would. I find it amusing that some of you question my suitability to be a Scouter. LOL!

Horton would not agree.

When is a crew member an adult according to BSA?

"However as Beavah likes to say "da rules is da rules"," Except when he figures that breaking the rules isn't a big deal. -
" He's literally one MB requirement away from earning Star." I feel for you. However, in the spirit of Scouting, you should view it as his choice and not yours to make for him.
-
I would argue that unless you were under duress when you signed the papers, you have a moral and ethical obligation to abide by the rules that you agreed to even if they are unenforceable.

Oh my Gawd! What a horrible idea! None of that stuff is relevant in todays world! The boys might actually learn something which is not the goal of Summer Camp. For an appropriate anniversary celebration, prepare a power point presentation about how Scouting has improved over the years and how they need to be thankful that they don't have to actually learn anything now. For the record, the above is sarcasm.

Actual Organization Matters
Gold Winger replied to BrotherhoodWWW's topic in Open Discussion - Program
" Kids locked up in what turned out to be a more informational than a hands on engaging meeting are going to have a hard time sitting still" It's all a matter of expectations. I grew up Russian Orthodox and anyone who has been to ANY Orthodox service knows that even a brief service is long. As children, we were expected to sit quietly for two hours so we did. Oh yeah, we wore suits too. Of course, we live in the video game world where kids can't focus for more than 30 seconds and no one is willing to hold their children to any standard of appearance or behavior. Since we can't expect them to sit quietly and remain dressed, they won't. Then again, the adults aren't any better. Untucked shirts, caps on backwards, yakking in the back of the room. How can we possibly expect more from children than we get from the adults? -
I don't have a problem with banning meetings. I do have a problem with banning RVs and dead cars.

I doubt if Denver had something illegal in his covenants.
-
"When we purchased our last home, the deed included covenants that were not legally or ethically binding." Hmmmm . . . maybe a different state but my lawyer told me that they were binding.

"Ever watch kids playin' ball who aren't in a league? When Billy's little brother comes up to bat, he gets tossed easy pitches and gets to swing until he makes contact. Bein' kind and servin' the goals of havin' fun trumps da formal rules of a kids' game, but not of Major League Baseball." Once again, you're comparing apples and oranges. I earlier gave an example of how a local league can change rules if they wish. You kids game is one step below that, if not two steps. Now consider the local Little League. I don't mean Little League in the popular sense of youth baseball, I mean a Little League that is affiliated with Little League in Williamsport, Pa.. In Little League there are commissioners, directors, LL Umpires, and all sorts of people who are there to make sure that the rules are followed. Why? After all, it's just a kids's game, right? Why? So that the playing field is level (methaphorically speaking) for all involved. So that a championship game you don't hear, "my pitcher allows wore a white glove at home" or "if the batter/runner kicked the ball on the baseline, we just called a foul." If Scouting wasn't a national program with national standards, you ccould play fast and loose with rules. If the guidelines for a BOR simply said, "a group of people who understand the requirements for first class shall comprise a BOR" you could have a first grader on that BOR. Just like a franchisee doesn't get to redesign the Big Mac, a CO cannot redesign the Scouting program (except for Mormons).

Are we not all God? As a philospher once said, "I am he, as you are he, as you are me, as we are all together."

BOR: How flexible are the rules?
Gold Winger replied to fleetfootedfox's topic in Advancement Resources
" No uniforms, no advancement beyond a small group, an odd version of patrol method." Hmmmmm. . . . the uniform's not required, advancement's not required and neither is the patrol method. I don't get your point. You're obfuscating. -

"Remember what Hooty Owl says!" Give a hoot, don't polute? "* There is some sense of creepiness in a high school kid of 18 tenting with an adult of 40." I tented with a 20 year old last summer. A tiny backpacking tent. No one thought that was creepy. You must live in a strange world, Beaver.
