  1. We get them home in time for the last mass on weekend trips. On our longer trips (Thursday - Monday on Block Island) we take them to mass. Make that two groups, one to the Protestant church, the other to the Catholic church. We had one Hindu scout who had his choice to go along to the one of his choice to observe since he had to be somewhere and no one else was back at camp.
  2. Burnside, Welcome to the fire! Funny, on Saint Patrick's day no one cares how you dress or what shade of green you wear.
  3. If you want it to be realistic, there has to be rain. Would it be limited to one hour a week?
  4. Can this knot be worn by both scouts and scouters?
  5. If the pack T's wont be in in time, just get some fabric paint and have each tiger apply his paw to it. A hand print with their name under it would look great.
  6. I started out riding a 95cc suzuki street bike. Had to lay down with my chin on the gauges to get up to almost highway speed. Took a lot of teasing with it since I used to carry my 105cc chainsaw on the back of it (yep, I was a lumberjack - and I'm ok...) Next was a used 83 shadow 750 (first year of the shadows), That took me back and forth to Penn State (from CT). Gas tank was so small on that thing I had to kill the engine going down the mountains along one point of Rt80 to make it to the next exit with gas. After graduation I took out a loan for a new 86 shadow 1100. $3639.75 Paid in cash with a big stack of twenties to bust the dealer since he would never take a check for parts. put 45,000 miles on it and sold it for $500 Next up was a 94 Goldwing Interstate (new in March of 95)($10,212) I abused it, rode it hard and skipped most of the scheduled maintenance...110,000 miles on the clock so far and it sill ran great the last time I fired it up. But I can't ride to work anymore because I need my tools and can't ride weekends because I always have two kids with me now. At this point I think it needs too much work to put back on the road to make it worth it... needs new seat, windshield and tires and some punk with a paint gun shot out the head light. Better to take the $$ and use it as a down payment on a new one (either an other wing or the big BMW)
  7. mk9750, If the adults want to meet with the boy more, they can ask him in at any time. If we have a boy stalled at a single rank, we will ask him to come in for a board of review just to see how he is doing. There is no good reason to with hold advancement that has been earned. (edit to fix major typo.)(This message has been edited by wingnut)
  8. "When is it appropriate for an adult leader to use profanity at a scout?" Ok, took me most of the day but here goes... The ship is on fire, engines are about to explode every one else has begun to swim to safety and the lone scout on deck is frozen with fear and won't jump in to the water... Still not appropriate but may useful and forgivable. (Not sure why the engines would explode, but they always do in the movies.)
  9. April-D It all depends on what you mean by "silent auction". If it's an item sitting there with a bid sheet where each bidder writes in what they are willing to pay then yes, it's ok. If on the other hand you are referring to a line of items with a box in front of each into which you throw any number of low cost tickets then no that's a raffle.
  10. Now that you have an answer, care to stick around? Hope so...
  11. It doesn't cost you anything and it can't hurt. Tells the folks at HQ where you are going and gives them a chance to give you a call if theres a problem with that location/activity... Tell me again why you wouldn't file a tour permit.
  12. Ah, the best reason of all for uniforms... Take down their numbers and invite their own SM's back later to clean up. Sure to know that the boys won't forget next time.
  13. Hi AZ Wingnut, Our unit also does not allow husband and wife teams to count as two deep. Your CO can tighten the rules as they see fit. So, are you also a goldwing rider? (Mines a ' 94 GL1500i)
  14. The wipers on the bus go game swish, swish, swish swish, swish, swish swish, swish, swish The wipers on the bus go game swish, swish, swish all thru the town.
  15. I hope a few folks will use it to hire me to install flooring. If they do, I will gladly return part of it back to the IRS as income tax and use the rest to pay my bills. As for my own check, I would use it to pay off some of my credit card bills.
  16. Pack378, I had to take a quick look to see if you were from CT since the scouts in our troop selected a camo print for their neckerchief. We hear from the UP every now and then, but no one can come up with where it is written. all they come up with is the "Imitation of United States Army, Navy, or Marine Corps uniforms is prohibited, in accordance with the provisions of the organization's Congressional Charter." but since army doesn't wear a neckerchief I feel we are in the clear.
  17. Ask your local Elk's. They love scouts and flags.
  18. Do not start out as a small troop. If you do, you will stay a small troop. On day one, open the doors on a large troop that has lots of openings for new scouts. Announce it the new scouts at the first meeting. Then make it true... Plan trips a large troop would plan, do things that large troops would like to do, soon you will find that you don't have as many opening as you did in the beginning. Give the boys control. The first year, you will have to ask a lot of leading questions - "do you want to go to a camp where we can fish or one that has a great day hike?", "Should we open with the scout law and oath or should we use the pledge?" but even when you have to spoon feed the leaders, let them be the ones to say it - SPL "Would Jeff lead us in the Scout oath". Soon, they will do it on their own. If you do it for them, they will never do it. Start traditions now! Don't miss your chance. ashes from the first fire. A log book signed by every scout ever in the troop. Yearly charters all stacked in one frame. That Elvis/Chuck B./ Beatles song you blast on your way back from every camp out/cabin trip/summer camp/klondike. Shaving the SM's head every time the troop has a new Eagle.... What ever, nows the time to start!
  19. As CC (along with the support of your COR and the help of your committee) it is your responsibility to assemble a workable leadership team. If you take a hard look and determine that the unit would be better off with out this person you can remove him. That said, if the parents in the pack feel differently you may be in for a wild ride.
  20. Way to go Scout! I also hope he regains full function of the hand but with just enough scar that he has plenty of chances to tell his story.
  21. Your relationship to CMScout?
  22. We had a few of the 2 man Timberline's... they should have come with a belt as they fit just right on the average scouter. We love the heavy duty 4 man Timberline (the outfitter)Well worth the extra bucks but too heavy for backpacking.
  23. on the neckerchief is always fair game.
