  1. But, this is still the only MB, that I know of, in which the boys are encouraged to kill something. Fishing: 9. Catch two different kinds of fish and identify them. Release at least one of them unharmed. Clean and cook another fish. Fly Fishing: 10. Using the fly-fishing techniques you have learned, catch two different kinds of fish and identify them. Release at least one of them unharmed. Clean and cook another fish.
  2. "at all times" 3 a.m. ain't good for me
  3. Depending on the guys your hiking with you might be safer not smelling nice anyhow...
  4. I find this whole topic amusing. We advise the boys that they can take as many MB classes as they want but they will be missing all the fun stuff they rest of us are doing. Summer camp is way to important to wast it in class.
  5. SSScout, Not sure if I'd put 2BOUT on a scout plate....
  6. Ours are "ash" to hide the dirt and food stains.
  7. Dorthy ask the tin man "What would you do with a heart if you had one?" I ask "What would you do with an Eagle Scout insignia if you had one?" It's not like you can use it to get into the movies for free. It won't even get you an extra squirt of imitation butter flavoring for your $8 popcorn.
  8. fancyfelines87, Sorry for your loss. She sounds like quite a scouter. Rest easy Dr. Taylor, you've done your hour. ---------- side note, Welcome to the forums, hope you'll stick around and post again. YIS, John B
  9. Lisa, Osh introduced us to Read years ago when he joined our troop and we love it! It is huge! The camps have their own staffs and run their own programs. There is some cross over between the camps, but it's more of a hike rather than a walk to go from one to the other. The camp provides a few vans to move the boys between camps so they can get there in time for classes. Each camp has the basics such as waterfront, shooting sports, camp craft and scout craft. Small boat sailing is only in Waubeeka lake but you Buckskin campers can jump in the van if they want to take the MB class. Also, the wet and dry caves are located in Waubeeka. The ranch is on a side road that is not in either of the camps, there are usually ten horses there for the Horsemanship MB class but they only need them an hour or two each day. (the MB class has more to do with the two ends of the horse than with its back) the rest of the day you can rent them out for trail rides (About $10 per hour long ride) On the far side of buckskin are the office and health lodge ( a dozen bed infirmary that is thankfully always empty). Campers from Waubeeka jump the vans to take First aid and CPR cert here. Out beyond both camps the road continues on to what was once the third camp on the reservation (camp Tomahawk). It is now Summit Base. There you will find High and Low COPE, the Zip line into a COLD pond, indoor climbing walls, the cliffs for climbing and rappelling, and a jump off point for the high adventure treks. White water rafting is off reservation and you can either take your own cars or rent a camp van (we take a bus to camp so we have to rent.) There's a few small mountains to climb and sleep on for the younger guys who aren't ready for a week long trek. Staff from summit base can help you plan this out. We always stay at Buckskin. Theres just too much to do to spend time cooking. Oh, sign out one of the hand crank icecream makers while your there. http://www.onmyhonor.com/events0102/camp02/ http://www.onmyhonor.com/events0001/scamp01/ If you have more questions about this you can PM me at Chairman@onmyhonor.com
  10. I dealt with this years ago since that parents were willing to foot the bill the scout account didn't affect the youth. The solution was to come up with things that couldn't be had unless you participated. First year it was a hoodie with the troop logo on it. You could buy as many Tshirts as you wanted, but you had to earn the hoodie.
  11. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/main.jhtml?xml=/education/2008/06/26/ftchild126.xml Interesting story about "vetting of adults" in the UK. Seems they have a government of background checks. Not sure what I think of it... At least it's standardized. But as the reporter shows it has it's problems.
  12. We have a rule that we don't post the dates of upcoming events. Don't want to tell folks when we will all be out of town and our houses will be empty.
  13. Thing on the net never really go away, you just need to know where to look for them... archive.org has a back up of just about everything you ever wanted to see again... Using it I entered the link in question and came up with this... http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.troop19.org/DarkStar/darkstar.htm Click on the latest version or one of the older versions if that's what you want to see. (That's why I always remind folks there is no taking it back once you post it on the web!)
  14. Gunny, I wish you would have let us know where that link lead. I'd rather not have visited their site, I assumed it was a link to a news site.
  15. Hmmm... Some one forgot to tell tell them that the uniform was changing. But they look cool. My wife is contacting them to see if these will be available wholesale to her business. They have an 120 yard min order but that's not too out of line.(This message has been edited by wingnut)
  16. A great friend of mine would always remind me "The only purpose of a troop meeting is to get read for your next outdoor event". It's hard to remember and so easy to lose track of. Don't make meetings about advancement or games or just sitting around. Do this and your meeting will fly by and the scouts will interested again.
  17. For me it was walking in to a pub and hearing "Mr. Bell, Mr. Bell, over hear" coming from a former scout with mug in his hand. We had a quick talk about what to call me in that pub.
  18. The address in Glenn's reply comes back as a UPS store. So it's just a PO Box.
  19. I worry about family events pulling both of them at the same time. I'd want them to plan for this and tell me how they will solve this.
  20. I'm sure the scouts could do the job of my entire committee Including me (I'm CC)... But why would I ask them to? We do paper work, transportation, banking, more paperwork. Not on of our meetings take place in the woods and even I would rather be doing the fun side of scouting than to be attending my committee meetings.
  21. We lend tents and such all the time... If one were lost we could stand to replace it. Now a trailer full of gear... Well, I wouldn't want to ever lend some one so much that I couldn't join them at a camp fire if they lost it.
  22. A DE has a hard job, and I understand that, but if he is looking for some one to listen to his problems, go find a bartender. I only want to know how he is going to support the boys in my troop. If he supports us, we will support him(or her). But don't come asking for time at my troop meeting for FOS when we haven't had a unit commissioner for the past ten years. I have a troop to run and the success of my scouts is way ahead of the success of my DE.
  23. soon Our troop will be setting up our big tarp in front ofthe food bank to feed the mailmen as they do their food drive. An other area troop reflags all veterans graves in town each year.
