Thanks for posting this! I wonder if they whine and cry about their uniforms the way US Scouts do?

Never thought this was more than an exercise in philosophy then it hit me, this is important because if it's half empty it's a great chance for a service project and if it's half empty it's a real need for a conservation project. Either way, the scouts can take care of it and get a requirement signed off at the same time. (Maybe I just think too much.)

Whole lot of stuff available at your friendly neighborhood flooring store! Cardboard rolls of all sizes (thick ones from the carpet, light duty ones they ship trim inside of.) Scraps of everything they sell - wood, tile, vinyl ... If it's under 6 X 8 we toss it in the dumpster. Last years samples, we get new ones every year, who know there were so many names for beige.

I could see why you would feel that the list was yours, however "you" weren't selling greens the troop was. It's their list. The law won't stop you, I would hope that scout spirit would.

Pack, I see your point. My fear is that if we were to remove the DRP it wouldn't be long before scouts was just one more place my son couldn't bow his head and offer a prayer before a meal. I'm not thrilled at keeping anyone out, but I don't want to be tossed out of one more place.

Hi Dave, Good to see a local face here. I'm just a bit west of you in Waterbury. Best advice for after you cross over is look around your troop and pick something you would like to do and then volunteer to make it you own. Don't wait to be asked. What ever it is, it will be one item off the SM's plate and he/she will be greatfull.(This message has been edited by wingnut)

Scout Connection, boy scout t-shirt store

Wow, With the prices your charging you'd think you be able to pay for your advertising. -
I hear the best thing to do when some one comes down with swine flu is to put them on a strict diet of tortillas and pancakes..... It may not make them feel any better but at least you can slide them under the door. Just too risky to offer them chicken soup - way too much contact.

So what arbitrary rules do you enforce?
frank10 replied to CA_Scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
1) cooks are served last. 2) head cook leads grace. (His choice of any grace.) 3) NO ONE IS TO EAT ANYTHING UNTIL GRACE HAS BEEN SAID. This solved a heap of problems. No more little guy who didn't get dinner. No more cook sitting alone eating while the others are done and playing. Encourages patrol spirit. Promotes duty to God. Sets the mood for the meal... Some how they plan better meals if it will be "formal". Finally one of my own - I am a volunteer. I am under no obligation to do any thing I don't want to. This includes driving any one to camp who chooses not to wear their uniform. This include both scouts and adults. You can wear what you want and go to the event just find your own ride. If no one wants a ride on my terms I leave the car at home and take the Goldwing. -
If you have 3 - 5 willing and active committee members the CC only has two jobs first is to say "alright, lets get started" and the second is to say "Enough already, lets go home". Ok, thats a bit of a simplification but not that much.

Here is another case to think about.... Our school requires each family to raise $350 per year in profits from fund raisers... Any money not raised is billed to the family. This money is used to cover school activities such as field trips. While stated in reverse, this is the exact same effect of a scout account. The family is expected to sell enough popcorn to send their scout to camp. If he fails to sell enough, he must pay his own way to camp. Does anyone who thinks scout accounts are wrong have a problem with my school example? Is setting a min sales level the same as allocating a percent to the scouts bill? Mathematically they work out the same so is it just a matter of phrasing it right to make it legal? Moral? Just plain right? Or is the min sales requirement just as wrong?

Does recruiting & Troop Fund Raising = Service Hours?
frank10 replied to SMT224's topic in Open Discussion - Program
No. -
Funny thing about the things every one remembers from thee 60's is most of them really happened in the early 70's. Only thing left for the 70 is disco.

Each troop set their own joining fee and monthy (or weekly or even yearly) dues. How much depends on a lot of things like how much fund raising they do each year and what you are expected to pay out of pocket. I'd say the range is anywhere from $25 to $100. and either could be a great deal, you need to know what it covers.

Required - no. Allowed - yes, but not as a condition of getting the badge. You can hold a board of review any time you want to invite the boy to join you. We hold one any time we notice the scout hasn't been in for a bit too long just to see if he is happy and getting the support he deserves. BTW: welcome to the fire. Good to see you jump right in with questions. what camp troop does your troop use. Were in CT but have used several NY camps including C. S. Read and A.S.R.

It's not the age, it's how he thinks of himself and his place in the troop. If he is still "Bob" to all the kids he might be best off waiting until he becomes Mr. Smith.

Knight, Nice photo, but I'll have to check back tomorrow morning, the horses weren't there tonight.

The Pendulum Swings Back? New Term "Free Range Kids"

Ken, I'm disappointed... I was expecting the sprinklers to come on at 9:30. -
In most cases I have seen, a request is put forth and is passed by a vote of one... that's the one person who looks up and says "I'll do that for you". Next item...

Our unit commissioner is not just any spy he is a master spy! He's so good that we have never once seen even his tracks let alone catch a glimpse of his shadow.

Klondike Derby 1979 - I shattered my him about half way through the day. It was kinda the event that bound me to scouting.

The only possible reason for her not to wear it would be if her brother doesn't want her to. Even then, I'd want to hear a good reason.

John, All true. I see the wayback machine as a tool not some thing to be counted on. I also see it as a danger to folks who post first and think latter.
-
just a reminder that once posted to the web things almost never go away... Good bad or evil. Old versions of pages can be found at archive.org just enter the page address into the line titled "way back machine".

Hi from CT. You are the SM of a large troop with several openings for new scouts. Always thought BSA needed to publish a handbook for new troops.
