  1. Anyone else have one of these: * The Scout can't get a driver's license until they make Eagle. * When they make Eagle, the parents will buy him a new car. Ed
  2. Myth: If the US Flag touches the ground, you must burn it. Have your Scouts read the US Flag Code and see if they can find any such statement. Discuss parts of the code that might be conflated to produce this myth. Ed
  3. YPT re-certification is determined by the local council and/or by the chartering organization. Whichever has the shortest period is the one you have to go with. If the chartering organization has no policy, then you go with the council policy. In Stonewall Jackson Area Council, YPT certification is two years. Ed Webmaster, Vally District, SJAC
  4. Thanks! I knew there was a Scouting reference on that show, but no one could come up with it. I added it to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scouting_in_popular_culture Ed
  5. We have a Greenbar Patrol. This consists of the leaders not in the patrols proper- troop guides, instructors and the like. The ASPL acts as the patrol leader. During meetings, they have jobs to do with the patrols that keep them busy. On outings, they camp and eat as a patrol. The Scoutmaster has let them know that they can plan their own outing, but they have not yet taken advantage of this. Ed

Using the Consumer Price Index, this is equivalent to $116.46 in 2005. Rowan, Edward L (2005). To
  7. I don't know about a DVD, but it is avaialble online: http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/rankvideo/index.html
  8. >I had never heard of Enterprise, AL prior to this thread. Now they're in the news the same week. Please don't mention my town .. I heard about Enterprise, AL on the news this morning. I guess I picked them off the top of the list, as there are also towns in Kansas, Nevada, Florida, Oregon and Utah. Ed
  9. It appears to be the same design and comes with the BSA universal emblem. If you are wearing it as part of the uniform, then my opinion would be that it should be subject to the guidelines in the Insignia Guide. Ed
  10. >Perhaps Crew 86 would be an electronics oriented crew dedicated to placing a phone in a shoe which may be possible today LOL... missed that one. Perhaps they could perfect the dialing steering wheel or the cone of silence. Ed

  12. - Joining a great troop at 15 (after spending six months with a horrible troop and floundering for six months after they folded) - Making Eagle at 18 - Becoming a Scoutmaster on my 21st birthday. - My first Eagle Scout - Going through Ordeal (finally) in Switzerland - Crossing a Webelos den over to the troop after two years - Finishing Wood Badge - Watching my wife put on her Venturing uniform for the first time. Most of all: Watching a young man or woman doing something and thinking: "they got it". Realizing that there is hope after all. Ed
  13. Scouters' Reserve: A registration status for adults who want to remain identified with Scouting without a specific assignment. They may be called upon to help with short-term projects. Position code 91. Ed
  14. "Remember when an axe was a symbol of Wood Badge?" To be a bit pedantic, the axe-in-log is the symbol of Gilwell Park. As such, it is used as an emblem of Wood Badge training. That's why it is on the training neckerchief and not the Wood Badge neckerchief. http://www.scouts.org.uk/nationalcentres/gilwellactivity.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilwell_Park Ed
  15. To return to the original topic: The National Venturing Cabinet recently updated the uniform page stating that adults should not wear the tan shirt with green loops. http://www.nationalventuringyouthcabinet.org/uniform.html This refers to the USScouts guide that stated that adults could wear green shoulder loops. http://usscouts.org/venturing/UniformingFAQ.html Ed
  16. We keep about a years worth on the flag itself. Then they get stuffed in a box. We just changed sponsors and moved to a new church. The new room we meet in has two steel I-beams supporting the ceiling. We are going to put the ribbons on a board and stick them in the beams along with other awards and the like. Ed
  17. > "Earn your faith specific/age specific religious award" to the requirements for First Class, I'm not holding my breath. I'm just happy that the 3 Scouts in my sons' As noted earlier, not all groups have religious awards recognized by the BSA. Off the top of my head, Sikh, Shinto and Wicca do not have recognized programs (do I dare mention UUA). I do think something like Religious Awareness would be a great program. It could involve learning more about your own religion, learning about another person's religion and learning about other religions in your community, state, countr
  18. We use the current and the old material. The greenbars were kicking around a traditional campout per the 1911 handbook, but it certainly plays havoc with Leave No Trace. Ed
  19. WP has a biography of Williams: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Williams_%28Scouting%29 Its a "start-class" article, so it is not the highest quality. Feel free to add anything relevant. Ed
  20. CalicoPenn- Unless you really meant them to contact Roy Williams, I think you meant Scout executive. :-) Ed
  21. We require that all Scouts complete a basic handling session one time before they are allowed to go canoing. Our experiences shows that this develops the very basic skills and the confidence that the Scouts needs. Since we use older Scouts as trainers, they in turn sharpen their skills. We also do the swim test so that we can ensure they meet those requirements. It is difficult to do this once you are actually on the river and everyone splits up. Ensuring everyone has the proper training helps make for a trip that is more fun and enjoyable all around. We also do this for bike tri
  22. Some psych major could get a great thesis by studying the psychological interactions of the Pinewood Derby. That little car is just a chunk of wood, some nails and some tires, but look at the emotional involvement. The PD is supposed to be about having fun and about kids working with their parents. I understand why we have the rules- if we didn't level the playing field we would have all sorts of wild and wonderful stuff as it turned into who has the most money has the best car. It is just too bad that we have to focus on the methods so much that we loose track of the goals. E
  23. That sounds like a self-destructive plan. No elections = fewer members = lower attendance. Ed
  24. Perhaps it is time for the BSA to stop focusing on numbers and look at quality in other ways. I know the numbers are important when money is involved, but they should not be the priority. Ed
  25. Our troop decided to use the on-line training as preliminary training. We will then do the group training for the committee. We also encourage the Scoutmasters to attend so they can understand what the committee does. We also encourage the committee members to attend Scoutmaster training. Ed
