  1. I want need to thank you. By speaking up here, you have put a (virtual) face on the issue. By sharing some of the stories of your abuse, you have made it feel real in ways that "numbers" can't. By opening up about the struggles you have faced as a result of the abuse, you have exposed raw truths which many of us have probably never even considered. I am terribly sorry it happened to you. But I am grateful you are here. now. at the virtual campfire. with other scouters. I have learned a lot from you. I especially want to say these things to @ThenNow. You have given me a lot to t

  2. Being new I have not shared my story but one day I most likely will. I thank you for thanking others and I also would like to thank @ThenNow. Because of this thread I read almost all of 27 pages of of @ThenNowpostings. His grasp of the law, his understanding of survivor emotions, and most of all his personal story has touched me. I have been struggling for a long time with my mental health but with the way he has no qualms about mentioning his own journey and mental health struggles put me over the edge and I reached out today to my health care providor to get me help. I am 67 years old a

  3. "Debated" is certainly correct. But all good debates should rely upon facts. The TCC in its most recent objection below addressed the whole threat of the Pension being taken over by the PBGC and shed some light on its actual state. It also hired its own professionals who focus on pension plan administration in bankruptcies. If victims suspect that the BSA is using its "pension plan" as a place to place assets that should be used to address victim compensation they have good reason to feel that way. See below: vii. 4. Bear in mind that my youth scouting was in the UK, while my adult leadership is in the US. My observation tends to agree. Much as I love the Eagle program, and the merit badge programs, I see a lot of obsession with rank advancement, getting the merit badges to get advancement, and a scouting career that ends with Eagle. To me, Scouting is about getting confidence in being in the outdoors, in trying new (adventurous) things. The rank advancements happen naturally and provide incentive to participate in the activities to learn the skill. I joined Scouts as a youth as I wanted to camp and h

  5. For those who want to look into more robust (but certainly not void of limitations) analysis: Global: Barth, J., Bermetz, L., Heim, E., Trelle, S., & Tonia, T. (2013). The current prevalence of child sexual abuse worldwide: a systematic review and meta-analysis. International journal of public health, 58(3), 469-483. 6. I've argued this point before. There's plenty of actual evidence showing that the incidence of child sexual abuse is much higher among the general population than it is within Scouting (based upon known cases in Scouting). Here is the quickest one I could find. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4311357/

"Back in 2015, the Eastern Divide Trail (EDT) was conceived to link the two great Eastern Continental Divides and create a bikepacking-specific route akin to the legendary long-distance hiking trail in the same region, the Appalachian Trail (AT). Similar to the AT, the EDT will connect the scenic eastern mountains and their seemingly infinite ecosystems via the historical and cultural landmarks, natural wonders, and beautiful backcountry that thread through some of the oldest mountains in the world. ... 8. Thank you for posting. Truly. This is the best thing I've heard in a while and it has boosted my flagging spirit! You have made a brave move and, though I don't know you, I'm proud of you. I most sincerely hope for additional healing and forward progress. "Baby steps" and "Just for today," as they say.

  9. I don't think anyone can confidently say "likely" or not, yet. The BSA plan (either the "Global" or the "Toggle" version) does say that a time-bar is a factor, but that the Trustee may still allow and pay such claims. One reference would be starting at page 181 of the document (page 187 of the PDF). Under heading "Invalid Abuse Claims", the TDP says A few pages later, after the tiers of abuse with their base point values, several aggravating factors, and a couple other mitigating factors, we find (page 188 of the document, page 194 of the PDF), So the Trustee could assign

  10. Thank you. More information is always good. However, I will point out that, once again, this report is extrapolating data from other secondary sources. It is just collating responses from three separately conducted surveys done among different age groups in different years. Even combined, it is a very small data set. Some studies like these are useful when they can provide a meta analysis of large groups of like reports. In this case, it's interesting but not very useful when making any kind of informed conclusion about scouting. I think that's fine for general opining, questions, an

  11. Would you consider reposting this on the main Chapter 11 Part 175 thread? Well, Part 3, but...Please feel invited to edit the mention of me, as I'm asking so all survivors who visit that thread will see it and no other reason. Your call, of course. Many may not find it here. Thanks, again.

  12. I am assuming it's possible because BSA and councils can make several payments into the CSA fund over several years.

  13. I made similar points about that report as well in the Councils thread. There has been a significant amount of research done on child sexual abuse in the U.S. to confirm that there is in fact a significant magnitude of difference between male and female CSA. Some routinely cited figures report 1 in 5 girls vs. 1 in 20 boys. At that rate, or anything close to it, it means the study you cited is claiming that a vast percentage of American school girls would have had to have been assaulted at some point during their school day. Seems unlikely. It could be true, but my point is without a wel

  14. I presented the peer reviewed study by Shakeshaft in 2004 of schoolchildren in the USA that was used in at least one official USA government report. There are issues of comparing what has been Jorge a male organization to a coed study. I believe that the rates of abuse difference between males and females is not an order of magnitude whereas the difference between Scouting and the schools is two orders of magnitude. So one is probably safe to say that Scouting is an order of magnitude to maybe two orders of magnitude safer than the schools. This does not absolve the BSA from the ha

  15. Yes, and that's exactly what I'm talking about. Statistics such as this that include girls can't be used for comparison to abuse that occurred in boy scouts because it has with a few exceptions largely been committed against boys in our organization. While anecdotally believed to be underreported, the sexual abuse rate among boys is a fraction of what it is among girls. Finally, this is an international report and cannot be used to compare to US or European rates because of cultural differences, largely regarding girls, such as you see in parts of Africa and South America. It is possible

  16. So far there are no bench decisions on assets and the TCC is still questioning the validity of what the BSA says is restricted. Money/assets are exactly as you stated " potential pool of local council assets and insurance policies and good luck fishing'". If the plan is turned down by the judge she will then rule on the exclusivity. If exclusivity is denied to the boy scouts then we will see most likely two competing plans. I believe that the TCC most likely has one waiting in the wings. This is also the week the TCC is supposed to give the BSA a plan to give to each indivi

With that many from numerous insurers I surmise their is major exposure. Quite possibly why the insurers want to extend the exclusivity period for BSA.

  19. Based on the TCC's town hall last week and the new fairly oblivious filings over the weekend, I see no evidence, smoke signals or cloud formations indicating there is any prospect of a pending mediated settlement. I supposed there is always a very, very remote possibility, but I highly doubt it.

  21. My son actually brought this Nationall Outdoor Award Meda idea to me (SM) and said this is what his goal was. He worked with our Awards Chair to help him understand what each segment was and encouraged other scouts to go for as many segements as possible. As an older, 16, scout it gave him a reason to go to summer camp and to look outside for training. Many of the requirements come from earning a MB and then participating in those activities but the other parts were hard for him to complete. WFA - 16 hour training was hard to schedule aroung sports and troop activities. LNT train the trainer w
