  1. I hope you keep working your ticket! It is worth figuring out how to get done within your new situation. I really dislike the coed troop idea. At first, I was very upset at the BSA. After I have worked more and more with our girl troop, I see the reason why the BSA decided not to go co-ed. The Scouts take more risks when not around our boys troop. They speak up more, they laugh more, and they lead more. They have fund playing 9 square etc. with the boy troop, but really come back and learn about leadership when outside of the earshot of the boys.

  2. Hey everyone! New merit badge counselor here looking to gain knowledge and more! I am from Arizona, did scouts as a youth member for many years and am now living in Utah after being stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Layton. I'm excited to find a troop soon, and begin sharing my knowledge and experience with the scouts!

  3. I have been a den leader, scoutmaster, baseball coach, and basketball coach. The local scouting organizations I have been a part of have done an excellent job keeping youth safe. Little League baseball has background checks for coaches, do not have the two deep leadership/no one-on-one rules that the BSA has. I coached for a Christian school and they too only have the background check and cases where I was the only adult at practice. I have to give kudos to my district day camp leadership, because they take youth protection seriously and model the desired behaviors to scouts and adult vo

  5. Kool. It could monitor how systems are abusing our kids, and hold them accountable. Heck, it could go straight to the source ... families. It could provide re-education camps for wayward parents. It’s a recipe for success. I’m sure predators would never corrupt such an oversight entity.

  6. Some background on The Hartford and the BSA, Local Councils More than 18 months prior to filing for Chapter 11, the BSA and local councils sued The Hartford in District Court in Dallas on June 5, 2018, saying that some sexual-abuse lawsuits were covered by insurance policies. The Hartford had denied its coverage obligations under the policies, including coverage for defense costs and indemnity payments associated with the lawsuits, the Boy Scouts of America said. Under the policies, The Hartford agreed to cover sums that the Boy Scouts would be “obligated to pay as

  7. I'm a little unclear what you're saying here. The insurance companies were not insuring the victims of abuse, they were insuring BSA against their own negligence in allowing the abuse. I have no idea what the original coverage was or what exposure the insurance companies had. BSA doesn't have much incentive to negotiate with a bias in either direction. They're not going to be the party that collects the proceeds so they're probably not holding out for the last marginal dollar, on the other hand, the more money they procure the more hope that a final settlement can be reached. 8. I do wish the BSA was working more directly with the TCC, but I see this as BSA attempting to get all of the payers (LCs, insurance companies, COs and National) to pull together a settlement offer. On the other side of this is really the TCC & FCR who are likely working on detailed expectations of what they think the National BSA, LCs, COs and insurance companies should pay. This will be a negotiation back & forth. I'm just happy to see that we have finally seen an offer from the insurance companies (understanding it probably isn't high enough for an agreement yet). 9. We do not do masks in any aquatic activity. You go in the water with one on, and your breathing is immediately impaired. Not a good idea, IMHO.

  10. My guidance as a MBC? **ALWAYS point to the posted requirements and ask the Scout how they have fulfilled them? ***The "Work book pages" are NOT passing the requirements. Those are for the Scout's benefit in PASSING the requirements, but are NOT the passing. Prerequisites are ALWAYS good. The Scout should "Be Prepared" when they come to you. **** Celebrate the accomplishment. ALWAYS mention the good stuff, then encourage the way to make the not-so-good-stuff GOOD. *****Keep yourself available for consultation, but always keep your YP (really AP, yes?) in mind
