  1. The thing that has bothered and challenged me for a long time is that scouting where I live doesn't even look like our local high school or the local sports leagues, drama clubs, high school bands, etc. in terms of diversity of membership. I live in a pretty median mid-west suburb. If you go to the local high school you see a fair number of kids whose ethnicity is clearly Middle Eastern, Asian, Indian Sub continent, Hispanic, et al. But if you go to our district camporee the ethnicity is almost uniformly white. There's no reason to think there is any disparity between their parents in

  2. It is interesting. Have to be careful though, National has a reputation of using research to justify changes that they wanted to implement before the research was started. Barry

  3. I live in the 7th most diverse city on the U.S. (three of the six ranked above us are our neighboring cities). My son's Troop has a couple of Hispanic/Latino kids (same family), a few Asian kids, three bi-racial kids, and one Black kid (my son, from a transracial family). We are right in downtown, such as it is, and don't come close to matching the racial and ethnic breakdown of the schools, soccer teams, track teams I've coached, etc. Scouting is missing large and growing populations.

  4. None of the recommendations mean anything when the registration fee keep going up. I stated a dominant minority pack once that traditional way (i.e. not a Scoutreach unit). Highlight of my career. From start to finish, it took almost a full calendar yaer. They were unable to reacherter because they couldn't pay the fees.

  5. Some questions after 15 years. Which study recommendations were tried? Were they successful? How have these Diverse Markets changed?

  6. Ditto the above. Slow to load, ads do not release when "close" or "x" or "No Thanks" clicked for 30 or more seconds. AND I have to wind the spring on the back of my laptop more often.....

  7. As stated, the opinions article was written by two Anthony Wayne Area Council staffers: Tammy Taylor, Director of Development, and Phil Ferguson, Summit District Executive with references to a 2006 study "Reaching the Next Multicultural Generation" by New American Dimensions. I found the following: Powerpoint Presentation of study https://slideplayer.com/slide/14893104/ Successful Marketing: Tapping into Diverse Markets (pdf) In 2006, two studies show how Scouting can meet the needs of diverse communities. The first study, Reaching the Next Multicultural Gene

  8. A generation of traumatized fathers? Just the opposite. They didn't need to run off to their therapist over every little disappointment or imagined slight. They didn't dwell on drama. They didn't see themselves as the center of the universe. They earned their grades. They worked for their paychecks. They volunteered an incredible amount of time at church and service clubs. They built good, clean, safe neighborhoods and schools for their children. They gave me a pretty darn good life. They're gone now, and I miss them. God bless 'em.

  9. Read BSA policy on what type of building is best. Backpacker had a Short QA on part of that question March 26,2010 Are Hammocks Safe in Lightning? Heavy rain only i would stay put heavy wind or lightning i am moving the the building, Plumping is one of the items that make a building more lighting safe.

  10. The only correct choice would be go to the bath house as this is the only substantial building present. (Any Close hard top cars would be good also Open shelters look inviting but offer no lighting protection and maybe even an increased risk. Just look on the first page of BSA lighting awareness page. If they youth refuse to go good subject for a troop confernce . your other adults are the main issue? Lighting you go indoors no questions (search lightning deaths if you have any questions) John
