  1. I respect all scouts I just want the option for all boy Troops for similar reasons many females want GSUSA to stay female only, I just do not think it will be a real option. I do not think national can pull off what they say. Boys are being neglected in our society. However it seems that is an opinion that is not allowed to be uttered on this board.

  2. I'm linking these two quotes because they go together, just bear with me and read all of my comment before going ballistic. We already know that many parents today view convenience as being more important than development. Let's face it we see it with parents having their kids"earn" Cub Scout awards due to their parents signatures, parents pushing kids to advance, etc. BSA has hopped aboard that as their stated reason for "Family Scouting:" making it more convenient for families to have a one stop Scouting experience. As a result I see fewer and fewer all male Cub Scout packs in the futur

  3. @Eagle1993 Planning? That mainly consists of cutting noodles and buying supplies. We already have a gutter raceway built. Two 15 ft lengths sealed on the ends, mounted on a frame. They sit on sawhorses. Day of? I allow 2-3 hrs for the event. A come and go affair. We also set up our air rocket launchers for additional fun. It's more of a mixer than a competition. Returning Scouts reconnect, new Scouts and families see our group and get an intro to our Pack.

  4. My older son also joined a swim team to pass swim tests. Though not fast or able to flip turn, he medalled in competitions since he had no lane violations.

  5. Our Pack had instituted RR as some summertime event where boys got the balsa wood kit the day of the event and went at it right there and then. By the time we got around, it was usually 4-6 boys participating. If you even knew it was happening. Very dispiriting. I changed it to the first Pack-wide event after recruiting was done. A way for new and old to meet and introduce people. But the kits were problematic. So we did away with them. Donated pool noodles cut in half length wise, approx 10" long serve as hulls. Bendy Straws and foam sheets are masts and sails. Pencils and dowels make th

  7. You are an intelligent man. You understand that people of certain religions object to, and even condemn, the beliefs and behaviors of certain other people. Yes, we have disagreements. Very serious disagreements. You trivialize these disagreement when you lump them together with benign characteristics such as hair color and food preferences. You insult us when you compare our disagreements with racism. If, for this and no other reason, we were to distance the scouts in our units from those in yours, just to avoid the insult and indignity of being called out as bigots, that would be re

  8. I think this is they key difference - and one that explains many of the critiques of GS troops. GS troops really can be just as strong and have just as amazing programs. It's the rigidity of the BSA approach coupled with the institutional knowledge the established troops have the make the Boy Scout program appeal to many. I'm convinced that if the GSUSA leveraged some of those concepts, they would grow quickly.

  9. I also love neckerchiefs and wish that more troops would bring them back, especially now that they come in a larger size. It always seemed to me that the neckerchief is the most characteristic and recognizable element of the scout uniform.

  10. Another thing to consider when the "others" are solely the parents is the inherent hierarchy of the parent-child relationship. In some (many?) cases it might be difficult for either/both the child and parents to suspend that relationship hierarchy for the scout to actually lead. IMO unless the individual circumstances make it impossible to have others besides parents, I would be extremely suspicious of any project completed solely by a scout and his parents.
