So what arbitrary rules do you enforce?
dg98adams replied to CA_Scouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I'm not the big cheese in our Troop (lowly ASM) but I have what I call "DG's sayings" instead of rules that all Scouts in our Troop hear at one time or the other, over and over and over, till it sinks in....sorta, till the next victim, er.. Scout does it. After each saying, the "deer in the headlight look" usually lasts 3-10 seconds before either they "get it" or ask again. They get a straight answer after that if they still are ????. Mr. Adams - Do you know what time it is? me - yes (then I usually look up into the sky, or under a rock for confirmation). (untucked Scout shirt or unbuttoned shirt pocket at a COH/Troop meeting) Me - Wow, I did not know you are a Girl Scout now...nice skirt Cadet. Me - Tuck it or shuck it.... Me - Hey, your chest fly is open! Me - XYSP (Examine your shirt pocket) And a couple old favorites... Mr. Adams, Can I go to the bathroom real quick? Answer - I don't know, but I'll time ya..... Mr. Adams - Do we need our handbook/MB Book? Answer - heck no, but I am surprised you have it memorized by now. I heard a saying of A. Lincoln's at Woodbadge, that I may start using. "No matter what you are doing...be the best at it" -
Scout must be 1st Class before he can earn MB ???
dg98adams replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Advancement Resources
A Scout can work on a merit badge anytime during his tenure as a Boy Scout (before 18). Although, most are encouraged to get started on Advancement as it leads naturally to some of the requirements in Merit Badge work. -
How to refurbish an old canvass tent..???
dg98adams replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
I just used a product called Canvak to seal a canvas tent. Good stuff so far. A place that does boat covers, could redo your sewing cheaper than most. Mild cleaners can be used before re waterproofing. Nothing too hash that can damage cotton/canvas. -
I did the Ivory soap (it floats) with my Bears...I suggested making "boats", with tooth pick sails, etc... and then we floated them in a race in the "gutter".

505 posted...."Was this action justified?" I answered with ..... "yes" I further put the ...."why do you think it wasn't?" I am surprised 505 had to PM me that I was being "confrontational". If "yes" and "why" sting so much, maybe 505 should not post any inquiries that result in any response.(This message has been edited by dg98adams)

I did find this (2006) on revoking the Eagle rank reported by Mike Walton.... I do not know know the man but from what I have read on him for years he sounds credible. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474977728933 from Mike's article: "I can't only to say that the BSA's decisions over the years have to deal with murder, multiple rapes, child abuse on a grand scale, larceny, and similar type crimes. As I stated, the 37 members of the BSA's National Executive Board -- four of whom are professional Scouters; the rest are corporate presidents, leaders of national social, religious and educational bodies; and two retired military officers; I believe that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is still a member of the BSA's National Executive Board (not sure about that; I know as the former CIA director, he was a member of the National Executive Board) -- make the decisions about retention or revocation of the Eagle and/or other national awards (Silver Buffalo, Beaver, Antelope, World). There's no guidelines on what will "revoke your Eagle" -- not on paper, anyways."

When do you tell a Scout no on advancement???
dg98adams replied to Crossramwedge's topic in Advancement Resources
Hey, I would be interested in reading the BSA procedure for "revoking Eagle"....can you show me where it is described or published? -
"but in scouting he's been a failure" Let me get this straight, you told a "Life Scout" who is preparing to work on his Eagle Project he has been a failure as a Scout? INMO if there's a "failure" it's you in labeling a youth. Remember, the aim in Scouts is not to reach Eagle, just 1st Class. Do you encourage a Scout who only ever achieves 1st class to hang his head in shame forever? I'm only surprised the dad did not hand you your head.

Sorry to cut and past here...in case you have seen it. AFTER earning the Bear badge, a special collection of age-appropriate Bear Electives are also available to allow Bear Cub's to earn Arrow Points FOR BEARS ONLY! There are slight differences between the Wolf and Bear Arrow Points rules. In the Bear program, achievement requirements now follow the same rules as the elective requirements. Each one is a separate project. The achievements sometimes require completion of an elective to satisfy a particular requirement. As such, after completing all of his achievements a Bear Cub can go back to his electives and use any requirement he did not count toward his Bear badge. Remember these important rules: * A Bear can mix requirements from electives and unused achievements in any way to get the ten he needs for each Arrow Point. * He may earn Arrow Points from the Bear Cub Scout Book until he becomes a Webelos Scout. * He may work on these electives all through his Bear year, but he cannot receive Arrow Points until he has earned your Bear badge. * Any achievement requirement that he has completed to earn his Bear badge cannot be used again to earn Arrow Points, but there are many more to choose from. http://www.geocities.com/~pack215/arrow-points.html Been a while since I was CM, but I think all of each numbered req. needs completed to count.

Since Tigers are accompanied by the parent... den size is not a major consideration. But how big are the dens in the other ranks? #8-10 from Wolf to Webelos is the norm. sized den I have worked with.

Dude, your symptoms are right out of the Hypothermia & dehydration text book examples. http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/safety/hypocold.shtml How Your Body Regulates Core Temperature 1. Vasodilation - increases surface blood flow, increases heat loss (when ambient temperature is less that body temperature). Maximal vasodilation can increase cutaneous blood flow to 3000 ml/minute (average flow is 300-500 ml/minute). 2. Vasoconstriction - decreases blood flow to periphery, decreases heat loss. Maximal vasoconstriction can decrease cutaneous blood flow to 30 ml/minute. 3. Sweating - cools body through evaporative cooling 4. Shivering - generates heat through increase in chemical reactions required for muscle activity. Visible shivering can maximally increase surface heat production by 500%. However, this is limited to a few hours because of depletion of muscle glucose and the onset of fatigue. 5. Increasing/Decreasing Activity will cause corresponding increases in heat production and decreases in heat production. 6. Behavioral Responses - putting on or taking off layers of clothing will result in heat regulation Urination - people will have to urinate from cold diuresis. Vasoconstriction creates greater volume pressure in the blood stream. The kidneys pull off excess fluid to reduce the pressure. A full bladder results in body heat being used to keep urine warm rather than vital organs. Once the person has urinated, it precious body heat will be used to maintain the temperature of vital organs. So in the end urinating will help conserve heat. You will need to help the person urinate. Open up the Hypothermia Wrap enough to do this and then cover them back up. You will need to keep them hydrated with the dilute Jello solution described above.

Before you "fire him" you also need to "recruit" new leaders, and get them to training. As CC you support/establish the framework.

No, sewing is still viable... Sometimes I shake my head at the stuff I hear at the Scout shop. Those people sometimes are volunteer Scouters with years of experience (sometimes not all up to date), sometimes they are just underpaid clerks, who pick up this stuff up by guessing or parroting the last person who was there. I have not seen a plastic sleeve for "Arrow Points", but when my son was a Cub the plastic diamond was not very durable. You should be able to find all the patches/pin/etc grouped together for display. Grab a book off the shelf (or bring one) if you need to check on what it looks like.(This message has been edited by dg98adams)

Do you need to be BALOO trained to do whitling chip training ??
dg98adams replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Cub Scouts
Whoops, I thought faster than I typed... ---->"BALOO is Basic Outdoor Leadership Outdoor Experience" -- BOLOE?? Should be: "BALOO" is Basic Adult Leadership Outdoor Orientation Consider myself whipped! -
"including 6 boys in our troop who had just crossed over" How did they get the 15 days of camping and 1st Class if they just crossed over

I bet if you ASK where is this written, you will get the "deer-in-the-headlight" look, before they stammer, "that's what I heard". Because it's NOT written. BALOO is Basic Outdoor Leadership Outdoor Experience training for overnight Cub camping... I have been the course director in my council for 3-4 years and trust me it's not in the syllabus. Good info here. http://www.boyscouttrail.com/content/award/award-434.asp -
The real questions need to be answered (SMART), sorry the WB TG coming out.... How will advanced training help you? If you want to lead your Troop into high adventure, then the "plan you create" on attending training toward that goal/outcome is a better ticket than just "attending training X". Remember, if you hang your ticket on the schedule of an outside person/council there may be a scheduling conflict, then where are you in your "plan"?

Troop Committee authority - exceeded?
dg98adams replied to Eagle76's topic in Open Discussion - Program
This is not "Follow Me Boys" or 1950. People travel a long way for stuff now a days. (I know it's 15 minutes via highway to my sons's troop meeting. It may be an issue of distance to the Scout meeting. If the Scout lives close he can walk. If he is not away on a 3-4 day weekend, sure he could make it. Scouts that need to be driven assuming parents will take them is something I would image the Scouts would have to ask their parents for before committing them. Not unreasonable for the parents on the Comm. to balk (veto/alter the calender....maybe/maybe not). In our Troop, those kind of meetings are not very well attended (yes we have some on those holidays). (This message has been edited by dg98adams) -
How many crossed over...and this may not be kosher. I would ask to see the "Scout accounts" which usually are not kept for cubs (no big expenses other than day camp/residence camp). Ideally you need enough to recharter in December. 22 x $15 - maybe adults too.

Buffalo Skipper NYLT is an unknown in our troop too. Although I have been asked to help staff it next year. I might carve out a week fo rit. For our Troop I try to involve "group leadership" games to even out the discussion. I would prefer to exclusively use the procedure in the SPL/PL book for the PLC, but I am just 1 of 4 ASM's. I think the PLC is the key, if you can get the SPL working to empower the PL, and do planning (they come prepared for the PLC instead of deer-in-the-headlight-look you have something). Emphasize Patrol identity, and using the ASPL/APL to make it work. eatmorefrogs No I have never attended a Jambo....my son is going to 2010 (only 2 out of his home Troop is going) with 38 of his closest friends from the council .
-
Have you had Troop JLT? Sent anyone to NYLT? Using the SPL/PL handbook (small thin one) for the most part & as SM you can use the G2SS and the "sweet 16" to limit the PLC "brain storming". Best advice, work with the SPL (before and after the PLC), and let him work with the PLC. Get the SPL/PLC to setting action items for the Pl to follow up on.

Really depends on if the old pack turned in the advancement forms. This can be avoided by using the "awards box" a lot of packs used. As a CM I always kept a few extra rank pins/patches (immediate recognition), though fewer closer to Webelos. Maybe the best start would be a "sit-down" with the Scout to talk about what he thinks he earned and go from there. Use a new advancement form. He may not remember with 100% detail, but should be able to discuss things. If he can't remember anything then the judgment call ..... I would want some current progress if he expects AOL.(This message has been edited by dg98adams)
