NBC-WSJ Poll on BSA 10/11 decision
walk in the woods replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
One might also note that 35-49 year olds (i.e. potentially parents of youth that could currently be members), the number opposing vs approving are well outside the margin of error. -

Based on the info given, 18-34 year olds are within the margin of error. -
WSJ 2019 selection
walk in the woods replied to Cambridgeskip's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
The young man on the left's face paint might suggest France? The young man on the right appears to be guilty of cultural appropriation . -
We put my son in several years of swim lessons. He's autistic and couldn't take the feel of water running down his face, in his nose or eyes. We started from just standing in the pool splashing. In the end he became a strong and confident enough swimmer to pass his swim tests every year. Still uses nose plugs and goggles as accommodation. If he really can swim well and it's just the jumping in part, maybe start with jumping in shallower water and move up.

Maybe a good candidate for a Venturing Crew?

I'm curious what you mean by mixed. I've only been to a few actual pow wows, but in each one the drums were entirely male. There were women present but they didn't participate in the drumming, rather sitting in an outer circle around the drummers. As for the dancing, the specialties were separated by gender. Male fancy dancers wearing the bustles, bells, and head gear; female dancers wearing and participating in shawl and jingle dress dances. Is your experience different?

Or he could answer with the company line, "Like the GSUSA, the BSA believes in the value of single-gender programming while reaching the entire family. So, we've decided to make our program of character development available to girls while maintaining the benefit of single-gender programming." Try not to roll your eyes while saying it......

New article online - Too much Safety limits program
walk in the woods replied to skeptic's topic in Issues & Politics
Too many to list, and with the pain of starting this discussion again, laser tag and squirt gun fights.......... -
Two years max. Once the LDS money dries up, and we don't see enough membership growth from adding girls, the third G will fall. We'll start a "discussion" at the National meeting in May 2019. The CSE will tell us there's no pressure to change. It's just an internal discussion. Think about it, if our new focus is to better serve families, then the argument will be we aren't fully serving atheist/agnostic families. The BSA will try to calm the fears of the remaining religious COs by offering the local option. People in favor of the change will argue character development isn't just fo

Flag Ceremonies for Political Organizations
walk in the woods replied to northidahoscouter's topic in Issues & Politics
Define political organization. Are we talking RNC/DNC/LP/Greens or any organization that lobbies politicians? Are city councils and/or county boards included in political organizations? -
It would be interesting to see how many 14-18 year olds pursued Eagle (and the many then equivalents) if they also had the current option to roll their own program.

What do you mean by "men" and "manly"?

Yep. Move Star, Life, Eagle and Merit Badges into the 14-18 age range, make Scouts all about 1st Class Skills, Summer Camps about having fun, etc.
