POLL--- Leatherman Tool or Swis Army knife
dan replied to Jason OK's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I was posting a message to explain to OGE that he was incorrect. I was going to tell him that it is DucT Tape not DucK Tape. And thought I should research it first and this is what I found! Is it Duct or Duck? We dont want you to be confused, so we will explain. The first name for Duct Tape was DUCK. During World War II the U.S. Military needed a waterproof tape to keep the moisture out of ammunition cases. So, they enlisted the Johnson and Johnson Permacel Division to manufacture the tape. Because it was waterproof, everyone referred to it as duck tape (like water off a ducks back). Military personnel discovered that the tape was good for lots more than keeping out water. They used it for Jeep repair, fixing stuff on their guns, strapping equipment to their clothing... the list is endless. After the War, the housing industry was booming and someone discovered that the tape was great for joining the heating and air conditioning duct work. So, the color was changed from army green to the silvery color we are familiar with today and people started to refer to it as duct tape*. Therefore, either name is appropriate. And I carry a 2" swiss army knife, I have a leatherman put it usually sits in my box of camping equipment. As usually OGE is correct. The moral of the story, you ask? Look before you leap. Check your resources. Utilize you resources. -
Philmont does not supply stakes for there tents. I have heard that Philmont tents take a few more stakes than most tents, not sure how many. Extra stakes will be for the rain fly(s) and to replace lost, bent, and broken ones. Your adviser may have you leave some of the stakes at base camp, it all depends on what adviser you get! So take the 10 per person!(This message has been edited by dan)

Jason OK I would suggest that if you really want to start a unit, call your DE, he or she may have someone intrested in being a CO. BUT, you may want to see about helping a troop out first to get your feet wet again, before jumping in the deep end of the pool!
-
I thought it was stated early on this forum, that if the CO was not going to continue on with a BSA unit the gear goes to the council.

What do the following ones refer to? You automatically look for floaters You keep a spider stick in the bathroom. "Get piece of the rock" takes on a new meaning

Every summer I hear scoutmasters complain about something or suggest something. Ignore the adults, if you try to please the adults you will be running around in circles, this SM wants it done this way that SM wants it done that way, setup your program and run it, listen to the suggestions, (notice I said suggestions not complaining or whining) if you think it is a good idea try to use it, but do not add or subtract from the requirements. Also, when I have to tell a Scout he did not meet the requirements how would I let him know? I have been an area director in other places and have told Scouts that they have to deal with a partial. It was not a pleasant experience when the scoutmaster heard so do you have any suggestions on how to deal with that? Be positive with the scouts say wow, you really improved today, maybe tomorrow you can finish it up! OR You finished requirements 1 and 4 you are half way there! Keep it positive but truthful. Now for the SM, make sure that the SM is not confronting you in front of scouts, ask him to walk a ways from the scouts, and just tell the SM, I am sorry but he did not finish all of the requirements. Be polite but do not change your story, do not argue with him, just keep saying he did not finish the requirements.

The old 3 pan washing method method, which is within the handbook. Is no longer the correct way for scouts to wash dishes. The new method to 2 pans both hot water with sani tabs in the rinse pan. Fire Buckets by tents are not to be used anymore. Because of West Nile and they say it would not do much good if a tent was on fire.

responsibility to deliver the BSA's scouting program

Laurie I am sorry that you feel like we where arguing, I thought we where having a discussion. I will let it drop, even though I know I am correct. Eamonn Anytime you are in town, even if I do not win the lottery. -
Boy Scout Training Isn't Strong Enough?
dan replied to Eamonn's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Sorry, it looks like I did not finish my thought. Is the training as in depth as I suggested. Actually telling the trainees what a SM should be doing at a meeting? I take it you think that the current training could not use any improvement? My suggestion about not training adults as scouts, can you see any benefit in that? -

Opps I was to subtle again! The uniform was a question was just a little barb for FOG, I do understand why uniforms are required for advanced training. How about the other questions I asked? -

The courses you based your suggestions on have not existed for over two years. It was stated in this thread that SM Fundalments have not changed much in 30 years. everything you mention is a part of the Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training syllabus Is it as in depth as I suggested? If a council can make uniforms mandtory for Wood Badge why not for all other training? -
Why would you call the BSA about the Charted Organizations monies? Check with your CO, if they are a non exempt organization they have rules they have to follow, which would mean the unit should follow those rules also.

Wow finally someone asking questions before acting! Watch out, some people here think that the is baiting! Was he sick? Was he hurt, (pulled groin muscle) and he was embarrassed to say his groin hurt? Did he fail a test in school the day before? Did his girlfriend dump him before the campout?

responsibility to deliver the BSA's scouting program
dan replied to dan's topic in Issues & Politics
Laurie Here are some of the key words you used. charged with responsibility responsible if a SM has no control he could not do any of the above, without control the troop would be like a ship without a rudder. The SM has control until it is taken away from him. By whoever and whenever. To say that a president of a company does not have control because he could be removed at anytime is lame. He is still in control until he is removed, just like a SM. Eamonn Maybe on this thread I do not feel like agreeing with anyone! Which is why possibly I put the thread in with the issues & politics. Maybe I am just trying to catch up with you on number of posts! You have been posting here 373 days less than I, and you have more than double the post I have. If I win the lottery, maybe you would like to move to Illinois, where the Three Fires Council would be reaping some of the benefit of my good fortune. I guess I am going to have to go purchase some tickets Saturday after the JLTC meeting. -
EXCELLENT Let them vote in their SPL, let him select his team, let the patrols pick their leader. Do not worry about term limits. They will surprise you and work it out. Good Luck and please let us know how it turns out.

responsibility to deliver the BSA's scouting program
dan replied to dan's topic in Issues & Politics
Laurie asked Do you think the SM should get to call all the shots his way? Yes, no, yes, no! I cannot answer this without specifics! Should the SM be allowed to make sure new scouts are placed in NSP. Yes Should he be allowed to pick scouts for all other Patrols? No Do you think a SM is in control of a troop? Apparently you do, you said he has the responsibility. You cannot have responsibility without some control. The control should come from the BSA program and polices. Q. Who has the authority to approve the scoutmaster? Q. Who really does it? Bobwhite The president of IBM can be removed, you say he is not in charge? -
Before I could give anymore suggestions, I need to know. Are YOU going to let them vote for SPL and PLS? At the next election?
-
My son is in a very large troop, 93 scouts. There is no limits on terms. The most any scout was a SPL was 18 months (3 Terms). The scouts wanted him to run again, and he said enough, I need a break. They will limit there own terms, especially in a large troop, it is a lot of work to be a SPL! Some scouts want to limit terms, but these are the ones that did not get elected, and they are looking for excuses why they did not get elected instead of the real reason, hint it has nothing to do with term limits. If you want a boy lead troop, let them pick their SPL, with no artificial rules added. In a large troop their are many opportunities for POR, not just SPL. The scouts may pick a poor leader, this is a learning curve for them and the new SPL. They will learn to pick better over time. this just make you job harder as a SM! But that is the fun part working with the scouts and mentoring them. Forget more rules, let them finish this term, and have the scouts elect a SPL, correclty, the next term.

Bob White And I say you are incorrect. To subtle, just like BSA training!
